How long does your 7 year old sleep, on average

DD is just turned 7. Brilliant sleeper (except that she cannot go to sleep initially alone), who also has always needed a lot of sleep - if the books said "at this age, most babies will need between 12-14 hours a night" she'd be the one getting 14 hours.

I think she's shifting her needs but can't quite work it out. Please tell me what your child age 6-8 routinely needs?

Both of mine need a lot of sleep compared to friends kids.

Ds6 bed at 7 normally asleep by 7.15 wakes between 7-7.30
Dd7 bed at 7.30ish takes a while to settle normally asleep by 8.15
has to be woken up at 7.30 on school days and will sleep until 8-8.30 at weekends.

TheSpanishApartment · 11/01/2022 22:15

Mine has always needed way less sleep than the baby books said. She’s just 7. Sleeps roughly 9-7 at the moment.

Juanbablo · 11/01/2022 22:15

Asleep around 8, awake about 6:30. He will be 8 in March.

I"ve been wondering if DD is actually just a bit tired and needs more sleep. Your comment above is making me think that might be it. I might try a couple of earlier nights this week - at the moment she's falling asleep about 8:45 and we wake her at 7:30.

DS is like this. I have two at opposite ends of the sleep spectrum! Grin

My 7 year old sleeps 7-6.30

RenGreen · 11/01/2022 22:18

Asleep 8/830 awake 730/8pm so 11-12 hours

2319inprogress · 11/01/2022 22:20

Mine stay at the other end of the scale Hmm all of them always have & they all dropped naps well before they turned two.

Current 6 yr old sleeps 9 hours occasionally closer to 10. She's my good sleeper!

WorstXmasEver · 11/01/2022 22:20

My 8 yr old sleeps around 8.30pm to 7am. (ish)

RisingSunn · 11/01/2022 22:21

7.5 year old sleeps 10/11 hours.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 11/01/2022 22:28

Around 10 hours a night for my 7 year old. Ridiculously jealous as I barely manage 5 and walk around looking like a zombie most of the time Grin

Yellow85 · 11/01/2022 22:33

Asleep about 8:30 and up at 7ish.
Never ever slept in.

samwitwicky · 11/01/2022 22:36

7 year old DS. He has always been one to sleep the higher number of hours for his age range.

At the moment I'd say he still sleeps 11-12 hours most nights. He can function on less but obviously is much more tired earlier in the day

DD is nearly 8. One of us takes her 3yo brother up at about 7:20pm, and she stays downstairs with the other parent until about 8pm, reading. Then she goes up for teeth, PJs etc, and is allowed to read on her own until 8:30pm. She's really good about this and is usually asleep very quickly. Sometimes she doesn't read if she feels too tired, but as she's already had a chapter with one of us that's fine.

She sleeps like a log for the most part (sleep trained at 14mo), and wakes between 7am and 8am, usually 7:30 on the dot. She's always been a total routine baby, though!

HeyMicky · 11/01/2022 22:48

Nearly 7 and sleeps 7.30-6.00. She never sleeps in and is vile if she gets less than 10 hours.

SkankingMopoke · 11/01/2022 22:49

7.5yo has lights out at 8.30, but doesn't go to sleep until 9.30 on average. She is woken up at 7.30, so gets 10hrs. She needs more IMO, but struggles to fall asleep. She used to have an earlier bedtime of 7.30, but this actually made her fall asleep later (between 10-11pm!). I attended a CHUMS sleep webinar which suggested trying the later bedtime. Once asleep, she is dead to the world though.

Fabuleuse · 11/01/2022 22:52

7.5 and needs at least 10 hours. When left to sleep in as long as he wants he could easily go for 11. He and his 4 year old brother sleep for similar amounts of time.

CovidForChristmas · 11/01/2022 22:55

Mine sleeps 7 to 7. Most mornings I have to wake them for school.

OnLockdown · 11/01/2022 23:09

My 6 year old sleeps 10pm to 8am. And maybe an hour more at weekends.

bagelsandcheese · 11/01/2022 23:10

Very jealous of all the kids who go to bed early! I've got e 8 nearly 9 year old and a 7 year old. Both were fantastic sleepers from being newborns now the 8 year old is still awake at 10/1030 pm most nights and the 7 year old falls asleep anywhere between 830 and 930. 7 year old falls asleep easily but due to being so close to big brother is easily distracted and stays awake. wake. both are woken up around 730.

waterpops · 12/01/2022 07:07

Nearly 7 year old has had trouble getting to sleep recently but he is usually asleep by 8.30 and I usually have to wake him around 7.30. If he does happen to get to sleep earlier he'll wake the same time. Neither of my kids have ever been early risers!

MintyGreenDream · 12/01/2022 07:08

Usually around 11 hours.Bed at 8 (goes to sleep straight away) then up around 7

LadybirdDaphne · 12/01/2022 07:20

5 year old goes to sleep about 8pm and wakes 7ish, although will sometimes sleep a bit longer on weekends

bluechameleon · 12/01/2022 07:23

Falls asleep around 9, wakes about 6:30/7

InvincibleInvisibility · 12/01/2022 07:26

So jealous of a lot of these! Asleep 8.30, awake 6am Sad

Plus one or two wake ups most nights with nightmares.

Aged 7.5
