I'm so confused about cribs and cots and basinets!

First time mum here. I'm overwhelmed with all of these different types of beds..
We want to keep baby in the same room as us for 6 months and then move them into their own room (yes in an ideal situation) but I don't know what I need? Do I need 3 different beds?! Can someone help me understand please.

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a crib or bedside co-sleeper, we’ve recently updated our best cribs page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Totally up to you! We use a Snuzpod (bedside crib) at the moment, DS is 8 weeks old. Then we have a big cot ready in his room for when he's old enough to move into there. We've never used a Moses basket but that's just personal preference Smile

Ihatestripysocks · 11/01/2022 18:54

Moses basket or small crib ideally for having in main living space in the day. Cots or bedside depends on how much room you have in bedroom and how much money you want to spend.

Mamabear1212 · 11/01/2022 18:56

Personally we had a next2me, then a cotbed. This way when they’re older you can take the bars down and it lasts a few years!

Not at all helpful but I read the thread title to the tune of ‘Sex & drugs & rock & roll’ by Ian Dury Grin

There is the danger that you buy loads of different things to put a baby down in to sleep and then the baby arrives and they decide that actually they'd much rather just only sleep in your arms for six months... so my advice is to get a stretchy sling and research safe co-sleeping!

Having said that, it's useful to have a cot beside the bed for ease of night-time feeding and settling. I took the side off the cot last time and attached it to the bed, but this time (I'm 35 weeks pregnant) I've got a Snuzpod to create a similar effect with less faff.

Daytime naps will be in the pram bassinet or the sling, I reckon.

Next 2 me type bed for in your room and the a cot bed for the baby's room.
We had the tutti bambini cozee and my baby's slept in it till 9 months then moved to cot bed. We did buy a Moses basket for downstairs but it hardly got used and they grew out it really quick

Poppy2022 · 11/01/2022 19:01

Next to me type bed for bedroom. Something for baby to lie in downstairs like a Moses basket or sleepy head.

Poppy2022 · 11/01/2022 19:01

Don’t need to get a cot for baby’s room yet

EdithGrantham · 11/01/2022 19:03

We had a moses basket for the living room and a SnuzPod for next to the bed, moses basket was used for around 10 weeks until DD decided she only wanted to contact nap and SnuzPod was used for 3 and a half months when she started waking up every hour to feed and since then she's been in the bed with us but the SnuzPod is still attached to the bed in case she decides to roll. We have a cotbed but the way things are going I can't see us using it any time soon!

MKCH · 11/01/2022 19:06

We had one Moses basket with a stand downstairs and a stand upstairs in our room and transferred between the two. Then when she got too big for that, when she was about 4/5 months, we dismantled her cot and rearranged our bedroom and rebuilt the cot in our room until she was 6 months... when we then dismantled it again and put her in her own room!
But I appreciate we were lucky to have the space (ish!) and the option to do that.

Next baby (🤞🏻) I will have the Moses basket downstairs (as we still have it), a next to me upstairs and then use the cot in the nursery from 6 months... but that's because we already have them, apart from the next to me.

Classicblunder · 11/01/2022 19:07

Most people have a cot or crib in their bedroom and then something in the living room. We went for snuzpod and just used the pram/carrycot downstairs. Also DS2 only really napped in the sling anyway

rosewater20 · 11/01/2022 19:08

We had a bassinet that we moved around the house during the day when baby napped and then back to our room in evening for bedtime. We waited to buy a cot until baby was ready to leave bassinet at 6 months and then moved the cot into our room until he was around 8 months and then moved him to his room. I am pregnant again and will probably use the pram bassinet or moses basket for naps during the day and a bassinet for our room at night--I don't want the hassle of moving the bassinet around the house during the day so will have an extra.

Classicblunder · 11/01/2022 19:08

Really recommend second hand for these things - there are so many free cots on our local Facebook group

SquigglePigs · 11/01/2022 19:11

We had a snuzpod in our room then a cot bed when she went into her own room. We didn't have anything downstairs but DD only really napped on us when she was tiny. My goddaughter sleeps in her bassinet in her living room during the day so it's dependent on what you want and what baby takes too really. I'd hoped DD would nap in her pram downstairs but she had other ideas!!

romdowa · 11/01/2022 19:14

We had moses baskets for bedroom and living room and baby hated them with a passion. We put him in his big cot at 7 weeks in our room and he loves it. Every baby is different so I wouldn't spend big money on something that they could end up hating

Bendyandthestinkmachine · 11/01/2022 19:24

You don't need three different things. What you get will depend on what you have room for in your bedroom. If you have room for a cot bed in your room, then you can just buy a cot bed.

Ideally you need something for baby to sleep in downstairs when you downstairs and upstairs when you're upstairs. If you're buying a carry cot or bouncer, then you can let them sleep on those.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend moses baskets because my DC outgrew them quickly. We got a next to me crib for when they were little and in with us. Then they slept in the carry cot when downstairs.

rrhuth · 11/01/2022 19:26

Don't spend much, as you have no idea what your baby will be like.

I bought a bedside cot, child slept in it about three times Hmm

I would leave all thoughts of 6 months for now, that is an age away. Focus on the first two months for now.

rrhuth · 11/01/2022 19:28

I just put them on a mat on the floor for their downstairs naps.

Nappynoo · 11/01/2022 19:46

Researching safe co-sleeping is a really good idea.

Moses baskets are handy for daytime naps in the living room.

We initially had a problem with the Chico Next2me mattress being too hard, so changed it for one that was still firm and appropriate for newborns (but was less like a wooden board).

No need for a cot yet, but well worth getting the best mattress you can afford for it when you do.

Tibtab · 11/01/2022 19:48

Mine sleeps on the floor in their playmat during the day or in the pram/bassinet of the travel system.
We have a Snuzpod in the bedroom.

PollyRae16 · 11/01/2022 19:51

We had the snuzpod for upstairs and a Moses basket for downstairs (ended up using the Moses basket upstairs too as he hated the snuzpod to start with) and then a cot in his bedroom which he went into at 6 months. Now in a toddler bed at 2 ☺️

MGee123 · 11/01/2022 20:43

We are short on space so just had one thing at a time:

  • Moses basket for first 4 months, carried it upstairs/downstairs depending on where she was sleeping
  • travel cot in bedroom from 4-6 months for naps and nighttime (against SIDS advice we started leaving her upstairs with a monitor for naps and in the evening at this age)
  • cot in nursery from 6 months onwards

So the only item in short term use was the Moses basket as the travel cot we will use long term, ditto the cot. You could buy all of them second hand, just make sure you buy a new mattress of the right size.

ISeeTheLight · 11/01/2022 20:46

We had a cotbed that DD refused to sleep in until she was well past 6 months. And the carrycot from the pram downstairs (was suitable for overnight sleeping) so I didn't have to buy a separate moses basket. For nights we ended up cosleeping.
If I ever have another child I'd go with the carrycot again for during the day and a cosleeper for upstairs- next to me or similar. Then a cot bed once they go into their own room.

Thanks a lot guys! Really helpful.

Had a snuzpod for DS (2nd hand from a friend) and hated having it attached to the bed - he would fling his arms about, made making the bed really difficult, I couldn't have my bedside table next to me, I could go on!

For DD we have a Mokee Moses basket. I find it bigger than a regular Moses basket and she has plenty of room still at 5 months. Have it on a stand so can be moved round the house etc. She'll go into a cot bed when we move her into her own room.
