Every night 1 year old drinks 1.5 litres of water. Normal?

Hi,

I introduced water to wean off my daughter from breastfeeding, hoping she would sleep through the night. It's made things worse. She's constantly waking up for water. She soaks through about 4 nappies every night. Feels like I have a newborn again.

She is well fed solids and has a nutritious, balanced diet.

Is it normal that she goes through this much water every night without fail? I don't know what to do.

If it is diabetes it cannot wait till next Friday, have you spoken to the g.p again since you got home. Did you see a nurse or doctor at the hospital, who directed you to outpatients and made the appointment.

WhatdramathisChristmas · 24/12/2021 16:34

@MsMorris

Went to children's A&E as per Dr's advice with the referral. They then directed me to children's outpatients. When I got there they told me Dr's wrong and GPs been referring people to them without appointments. Now home, have the earliest appointment booked for Friday next week.

I can't help being so worried now.

Should I continue feeding her on demand or by schedule? Solids and the water overnight?

Buy a blood sugar monitor and check her levels yourself. Borrow one if necessary. There must be someone on your local SM pages that could let you use theirs if you can't get to a pharmacy today. If it's type one, it's very dangerous to leave it even for a few days. I'm surprised that they couldn't do a finger prick test. It takes seconds. If she's positive, I'd be complaining that my DC had been left at risk.
Neolara · 24/12/2021 16:35

Can you get s blood glucose test at a pharmacy? I think they do them for adults. I would also go back to your gp and explain what happened.

thosethreewords · 24/12/2021 16:39

@MsMorris I am GP - please contact your GP today so that they can advise you properly. I wouldn't wait until next Friday.

Spidey66 · 24/12/2021 16:58

Did the hospital check her glucose levels? If not it can’t wait till next Friday. Bare minimum is a blood glucose test which takes seconds

Lifeisnteasy · 24/12/2021 17:01

@romdowa

If you suspect type one diabetes I'd be taking your dc to the hospital.
This. It is a medical emergency. Please call out of hours.
MsMorris · 24/12/2021 17:07

She was seen by a nurse at the hospital who sent us on our way back. I have called local pharmacy. Just waiting 2 more hours for her not to eat anything, then will go to the pharmacy for a finger prick test.

I'm so relieved you are getting her checked today 🤞

KittenCatcher · 24/12/2021 17:29

Maybe the gp referral didn't make it clear that they suspect diabetes and the nurse thought it was just some routine test. Guidelines are that this is something that needs immediate action. Why do you have to wait another 2 hours, hope l.o is ok. It must be very worrying.

Scrooge89 · 24/12/2021 17:30

Possibly diabetes

EgonSpengler2020 · 24/12/2021 17:35

Keep pushing (regardless of Christmas) at the very least she needs that finger prick test to rule out anything acutely serious going on. In my opinion (and direct experience) as a HCP whoever sent your child away from a&e without a blood glucose test is negligent.

MsMorris · 24/12/2021 17:36

@KittenCatcher Honestly, I showed them the referral, but they didn't even care to look. I even tried to explain suspected diabeties.

All they had to say was "not taking patients today without appointment, it's Christmas eve. GP knows this."

If you haven't had any luck getting a test sorted by 6ish tonight ring 111 and just start over again as GP services will move over to "out of hours" from this evening until Wednesday.

KittenCatcher · 24/12/2021 17:40

Thats shocking, fingers crossed everything is ok.

morechocolateneededtoday · 24/12/2021 17:51

I've only just seen this threat for first time. Appalling care from A&E, definitely need to be seen urgently. If not diabetes then need to rule out anything with kidneys too.

Hope you get an answer soon

popapoppadum · 24/12/2021 17:56

Hope everything is okay OP and she gets checked out.

Porfre · 24/12/2021 17:57

I agree she need an urgent blood test. Ring 111.

But when night weaning my kids they would do the same.
I switched the milk to water. And they would just keep asking for more and more water at night- it was the sucking for comfort they wanted.

I would only fill the bottle with an ounce of water and when it was gone it was gone. I'd just try to settle them to bed.

When they got a bit bigger. I switched the bottle to a sippy cup and they stopped. They fidnt want the sippy cup.
But i know if I filled the bottle they would have drained it.

CoopsMalloops · 24/12/2021 18:24

This is absolutely appalling and just shows the lack of education and knowledge of the dangers of type 1.
As other posters have said, classic type 1 symptoms and it simply can not wait another week.

Emmacb82 · 24/12/2021 18:56

Please please please if you are concerned about diabetes, you need to go to a+e tonight. It cannot wait another day, 2 days, week…… if it is that, she could be extremely poorly by then. It is quite frightening how uneducated health professionals are regarding diabetes. All it takes to diagnose is a blood sugar from a finger prick and a urine sample. Please don’t wait until after Christmas.

MsMorris · 24/12/2021 19:16

Little update...

Pharmacy finger prick result was 5.0 mmol/L.

Does this mean she doesn't have diabetes? Is she ok to wait a week because of the result?

Thank you all so much for the help.

5 is fine and not diabetic 😊 thank goodness for that.

KittenCatcher · 24/12/2021 19:20

We cannot diagnose here, why dont you try and contact the g.p or call 111 with all the information and this blood result and see what they advise

Spidey66 · 24/12/2021 19:21

Normal range is between about 3 and 8, so that's fine, which is greatly reassuring. As you found out it takes seconds with minimal distress to the baby. They should have done it in the hospital though.

But it's very reassuring, honestly.

stuckinarut21 · 24/12/2021 19:30

Could she have silent reflux and needs the water to soothe?

Lindtnotlint · 24/12/2021 19:31

5 is completely normal. She doesn’t have T1D.
