Too late for grobag?

JulieF · 12/10/2002 19:55

Ok, ok, I know I should have introduced dd to a grobag by 6 months old at the latest, but she always stayed under her covers then, later once she started to crawl out it was summer anyway.

She is now 12 months old and winter is looming. Every night she crawls up to the top end of her cot out of her covers. My mum says she won't toloerate being put into a grobag now and will just cry and being restricted. Is this right or has anyone any experience of introducing a grobag at this late age.

I have a friend who introduced a grobag after her son was 12 months old and he loves them.

soothepoo · 12/10/2002 22:06

DD went into a Grobag at around 16 months without any problems at all. I doubt if your dd will feel restricted - her arms will be free and although her legs will be inside the sleeping bag it is very roomy so she will still be able to kick and move around as much as before, except she won't get cold and wake up!

susanmt · 18/10/2002 21:28

My dd demanded a grobag when ds got one. He was 6 weeks, she was just past 2! She sleeps in it every night and loves it.
I am of the opinion it is NEVER too late to introduce a grobag. In fact I wish I could get one for me!!

SimonHoward · 11/11/2002 14:19

DD went into one around 6 months and cried the first couple of times but she loves them now. And she still manages to move around just as much as she does without one on.

JulieF

I used one for about 3-4 months than stopped because dd was staying under the covers and summer was coming anyway. Now I too regret stopping but dd is 18m and doubt she will take it easily, I have bought a couple of heavy fleece sleepsuits for the winter though, they seem warm enough even if she kicks off her covers.

You can always try these if the grobag doesn't work out.

good luck

like susanmt, I'd like a grobag but they don't seem to do a size 12/14

Tissy · 11/11/2002 15:31

I'd like one for dh to stop him nicking MY quilt!

Scatterbrain · 12/11/2002 08:54

Anyone know if you can use grobags in a bed ? DD adores hers and is currently refusing to transfer to a bed - I'm just wondering if keeping her grobag on might be a possible halfway house solution ?

Grateful for any advice.

Tissy · 12/11/2002 09:55

Certainly, you can use grobags in a bed. The only disadvantage may be that a grobag makes it difficult to walk/ crawl about, if he/ she gets out of bed. No, hang on, that might be an advantage!

Bozza · 12/11/2002 09:58

DS must have woken us up 9 times last night because he got out from under the covers so this thread is very interesting. He is 21 months though...

bettys · 12/11/2002 10:20

My ds is 3 and loves his sleeping bag/grobag. He started using it around 14 months, gives it up during summer then snuggles back into it for winter. He's in a bed, and has a small duvet as well, which always gets kicked off during the night. When he wakes up he shuffles round in his bag very happily, usually keeping it on through breakfast ( our house is quite cold). It's made the difference between a full night's sleep and constant trips into his room when he wakes up through being cold.

Melly · 12/11/2002 13:37

wouldn't have thought you would have a problem introducing one at 12 months. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread and really can't understand anyone that doesn't use one, especially when they say "baby is waking at night, I think they might be cold" Can remember my MIL commenting that "the only trouble is that she won't be able to stand up in her cot at the rail if you put her in a sleeping bag" utter crap....my dd stands and crawls around her cot in hers!!

PamT · 12/11/2002 13:58

I wish I'd known about growbags a few years ago. DD is such a wriggler in bed and now she is 3 1/2 she still wakes up most nights because she is cold having kicked her duvet off. How big do they make grobags?

bettys · 12/11/2002 14:51

PamT - JoJo Maman Bebe do grobags up to 4 yrs, and www.grobag.com do them up to 6 years.

Bozza · 12/11/2002 15:12

You're all being very persuasive.....

bundle · 12/11/2002 15:53

bozza, even though I'm a devotee, I have heard of a particularly singleminded 3 year old refusing to sleep in a sleepingbag that her desperate mum had just bought specially
dd has her eye on the Maisy denim one in the grobags catalogue, I think

Bozza · 12/11/2002 16:05

But Bundle he's only 21 months so maybe not that stubborn yet? Please! Bit unsure because the ones in GLTC are £26 and its quite a lot to spend if it doesn't work.

bundle · 12/11/2002 16:11

IKWYM about the cost. A neighbour of ours travels to France quite a lot where they're cheap (£10) so picks them up for lots of mums. Do you know anyone who'd lend you one for a tryout? The great thing about them is we pop one on dd as she's lying on our bed for milk/bedtime story..it sort of signals that bedtime is imminent & she snuggles down. she does now have the knack though of taking them off (plus everything else) and weeing in her cot on random nights just to keep us on our toes
oh and John Lewis has started doing the grobag ones which for up to 3 yr olds look enormous!

Bozza · 12/11/2002 16:15

I don't actually know anyone who uses one - let alone to lend us one. It has really become an issue as the cold weather has come because if we were sure DS was warm we probably wouldn't need to go to him. Wonder if I could make one? Thats probably a bit optimistic though!

bundle · 12/11/2002 16:22

bozza, I've only got 2 (one as usual in the wash) otherwise I'd lend you one. I thought of making one but a friend who's a pattern cutter started talking about regulations & fire-retardent fabrics & I glazed over.

titchy · 12/11/2002 16:55

Just a thought - never used one so probably not a relevant comment, but if you use a sleeping bag in a bed surely the child would not be able to put their arms out to break their fall if they fell off the bed - I certainly wouldn't like to fall out of bed with my arms restricted, or do you mean those ones with holes in for the arms? Of course you do what am I talking about.
Sorry.....

Bozza · 12/11/2002 17:00

Titchy its sort of like a cross between a sleeping bag and dungarees and DS is in a cot so no worries there. If I made one out of a cot quilt surely that would pass any fire regulations? I am thinking about looking on E-bay for one. Or at least getting DH to do so. I've found I can have anything I like as long as it is off E-bay it doesn't count in DH's eyes. Thanks for the kind thought by the way Bundle.

zebra · 12/11/2002 17:08

My kids both hate their GroBags & I think I have finally given up on the bags. DD had one from 8 weeks, but it's easier to use American style "blanket" sleepers on her (she gets too hot). Both kids are quite active sleepers.

DS is 3yo and can now snuggle under the covers. He always got too cold before this winter and he knew how to snuggle in.

Melly · 12/11/2002 20:35

Bozza, I think there is another thread (sorry can't remember where I saw it) about sleeping bags and I'm pretty sure that the larger branches of Superdrug are now doing them as part of their new range, although I don't know how big they go up to. Also, M&S are apparently now doing them. Boots do them as well and they are reasonably priced - you can get them online www.wellbeing.com - I think that's the right address. I think more and more shops will start selling them as they seem to be really catching on now, but I guess that doesn't help you at the moment. Good luck with your search for one.
Blooming Marvellous and JoJoMamanBebe also do them but quite pricey.
Nipping off now to watch Holby City......love it even more it's got Dennis Lawson, fancy the pants off him

Janeway · 12/11/2002 22:49

cheekyrascals.co.uk are doing buy one get one 1/2 price if you decide to go for it. We have ds in them (bought one winter & 1 summer weight (summer one used in emergencies in winter). He was always one for kicking off covers, but they're invaluable now he turns somersaults and wriggles at night
