Sleepyhead in Next to Me - please reassure me

After 3 nights of baby waking up every 30-45 minutes I put the sleepyhead inside the cot this morning and he slept for over 2 hours, it was the first time in 3 days I felt like I'd been asleep! I feel worried about not following safe sleep guidelines. I just want some reassurance that this isn't as dangerous as I'm worrying it is.

He's only 13 weeks - is this too early to have entered the 4 month sleep regression? He's never been a good sleeper anyway but waking this often is new! He has started to roll as well.

I just cannot see how co-sleeping can ever be safe with a small baby.
I did it just the once in the 1980s and woke up crushing him. he survived, he was a large birth weight, but I never did it again. I never felt it was safe and I trust my own instincts as a mother.

@madcatladyforever it depends on how you do it. If you sleep on your side, with your legs up and your arm like an arc over the baby you cannot roll over.

Yes thats how I've slept. Duvet tucked in knees and no drinking. I honestly like cosleeping and think baby sleeps well. It never fully feels comfortable tho but think thats overthinking it and worrying!

OP do you use a sleeping bag for baby? Much cosier than blankets. You could also be getting the regression (if it happens for you. Not all babies do/show it!) a bit early. Was baby born after due date? They can do things a little early if so, according to the 'wonder weeks' book

@iamverytired to answer your question- sleepyheads arent popular on here, cosleeping very much is. If my.baby actually slept in hers and she was in her Snuzpod unwound absolutely let her sleep in it. Loads of people buy them.and I dont for a minute believe that they do so just for naps.

My friend's 8 week old.diaghter had meningitis and when she was in hospital they asked.if she used one - when her parents said yes the hospital asked for it and they put her in it.

I'm.not saying they are 100% safe but there are a lot more dangerous things you could be doing.

Sorry for all the typos!!

@iamverytired you mentioned you put him down whilst asleep and then he wakes up again. Have you tried placing a couple of hot water bottles in his cot and then removing them a few minutes before he is placed in? This was a game changer for me from the first day I tried it. Babies are often woken by the cold sheets as a stark contrast from their nice, cosy parents.

Tomatobear · 01/01/2021 16:02

We use one as it's the only way our baby will sleep for longer than 45 mins at a time. I do have a nanny mat sensor underneath it and me and DH are both well versed in CPR which puts my mind at rest.

iamverytired · 01/01/2021 17:14

@bookish83 I use a sleeping bag yes. He was a week overdue and he is nearly 14 weeks so I am suspecting the regression.

@Chanel05 we use a hot water bottle yes - if helps keep him down initially but can be only a few minutes later he starts the startle process and wakes himself up.

@Tomatobear unfortunately being well versed in CPR gives me no reassurance - if you get a situation where you need to use it then it's very unlikely it's going to be of any use I'm afraid (paramedic here)

I did this from 12 weeks when mine went into their big cots except I took the filling out of the sleepyhead and put the fitted sheet over it. Worked well for my two for a long time.

Delta1 · 01/01/2021 17:30

And I had an angelcare sensor pad / monitor thingy.

LajesticVantrashell · 01/01/2021 17:48

Another one saying you don't have to do what I did, but DS was in Sleepyhead in Next To Me crib from the day he was born.

Tomatobear · 01/01/2021 18:49

Yeah neither of us have ever seen CPR work either (police), but it still reassures me! Maybe we're a bit naive here!

Tomatobear · 01/01/2021 18:52

I find when we cosleep it feels more risky and I'm just terrified I'll squash him. It's so difficult to find the right option when you're so knackered. Everything is such a worry too. Hope you get some sleep soon
