Sleep

Dun dun dunnnn - controlled crying help please!!

Soooo long story short. My baby is 11 months old. We've done controlled crying with her a few months ago and it worked brilliantly! Up until last week she was the best sleeper.
However last week two teeth popped in and she woke up a few times and was hard to settle.
Now I think she's done with teething for a bit (although always hard to tell with her!)
And she's struggling to settle once again. Before I'd put her down and she used to fall straight to sleep, no crying. Now I lay her down and she cries. Do I need to redo controlled crying because I've fallen back into old habits or is controlled crying a one time thing? Shall I just continue to comfort her as normal?
Many thanks,
♥️

Sometimes this is a sign that the routine needs to change. What is her routine currently?

She is less than one year old? Lots of fully grown adults dont sleep thru, they just havr had years to learn t9 settle themselves back down.
A baby is not designed to sleep thru the night. I know it's shit but it is true.

Controlled crying is outright cruel.

Of course. But she's still sleeping all night, just not going to sleep well. Thank you for taking the time to help though! Smile

Perhaps because she’s going to sleep extremely distressed... 🤦🏻‍♀️

Report
Katie17isabella · 14/04/2020 19:48

Sorry? There's no part of her life that's distressed. She cries for literally two minutes and gets picked up for cuddles. Was there any part of my post that suggested she was distressed? Or were you in my house to hear my daughter? If you can't post something helpful, don't bother. There's millions of children out there that are in horrible horrible situations, why don't you go and help them instead of insulting my parenting? Such a rude comment

I would lay her down and say 'time to sleep' and leave her. If she cries leave her for 10 mins then go in and lay her down again saying 'time to sleep'. Repeat but take longer each time. Try not to pick her up and stay calm . She will settle just is out of her routine with her teething xx

@Katie17isabella Sorry Katie for the awful unhelpful comments. Please don't let them upset you, they are just nasty people . I have had three children so feel free to ask me for help xxx I never judge xx

Mumsnet is notorious for calling controlled crying abusive, you won’t find much support here. I rarely comment on CC threads anymore (my DS is now 19!) but it worked very well for us, hope you get the support you need. nicky’s suggestions are good.

Finally a helpful comment. I think I've cracked it!
She went straight to sleep tonight so fingers crossed it was her teeth!

Thank you lovely! They're all probably just tired because their babies keep them up all night 😉.
I think she's back into a normal routine now, I think it was most probably teeth and practically put herself to bed tonight 😂. Thank you!!

Thank you!! I knew it would be a risky one but what can I say, I've got time on my hands! She went straight to sleep tonight so I think it was probably her teeth! Thank you very much for taking the time to comment ♥️

I’ll post “unhelpful” comments to anyone that’s letting a poor baby scream. Child abuse by another name.

SeriouslySoDoneIn · 15/04/2020 17:24

There is actually reports done on how it’s harmful to babies. I’ll go link them if you want?

Nothing the OP has posted suggests that her child is in distress. She’s learnt to fall asleep by herself, and she’s back in her routine.

Please do! My baby isn't screaming at any point. I literally lay her in bed and she goes to sleep. Not a sound. Although she does some times cry. Your child never cries? You're child's never going to experience anything she or he doesn't want? Get a life.

I have two little boys, 17 months apart. Despite the utter exhaustion, I have never brought myself to do the controlled crying thing. I just couldn't. Not saying that I'm better than anyone else but they are now 3 and 4 and I can look back and say thank God I held out.

Controlled crying worked for us and probably saved my sanity.

I had to re-do it after something disturbed the sleep routine.

@SeriouslySoDoneIn Your talking tripe. Babies can and do cry and it does them no harm! If you have others kids you can't drop everything to pick your baby up! Babies who are loved, fed, cuddled, bathed, etc can actually spend time crying in their cot it does them no harm! Mother's do need to eat and shower and rest for goodness sake!!!!!!

We did a controlled crying routine which was called gradual retreat but I would just go back to what you did before.

It saved my life too, I was on the edge. My partner did most of it which also saved my sanity.

It also saved our lives. No regrets at all.

We find if we have had a blip we need to make sure we go back to basics. My DS got his molars then tonsillitis and we took a really backwards step. Took a while to reset but we are in a good patch at the moment.
