Would you buy this for a 3.5 year old?

Hello mumsnetters

I need your opinion pls.

My DH and I need to replace our DS bed. He is still in his toddler bed but he's getting quite big for it.

We would like to invest in a bed he'll have for the next few years and that can provide us with the well needed storage.

DH wants to buy this bed but I think we should wait until DS is at least 4 ( he is 3.5 now) before buying a mid sleeper bed.

He says I'm overprotective and that DS will be just fine going up to his bed as there are steps and not a ladder.

Pls from your experience would you buy it or would you wait?

Thank you v much! X

My DD is 3.5 and she's been in her mid sleeper since Christmas. She is very tall and grown up so doesn't mess around on it. Other pals her age have got them too. One who is the same age but small for their age really struggles with the ladder so I'd say (as nearly always) it depends on the kid.

as an unexpected bonus, sleeps sooooo much better in it too. Before she was just on a mattress on the floor. It feels a bit cocoon like when you are in it.

We put our DD in a high bed just before she was 5. She literally never goes to the loo at night otherwise might have thought twice. I would question this, also is there a teddy/comforter that would need retrieving?

No way. Too many possible safety issues.
My DD 8 has a high sleeper and I still have the odd panic where I have to get up and check she hasn't got herself/dressing gown tangled and 'fell'.
I really wouldn't. I think there's a good chance he could fall.

Thank you all so much. You helped me decide.
We are going to buy this for DS. I know there's no storage but he'll love it.

We are planning to move next year so buying this for now. Once in our new home we will look at changing it. On the plus side he'll be older then :-)

What about IKEA's Kura bed loft? It can be a low bed but then in a couple of years you can flip it over to become a loft. IKEA reccomend keeping it low till 6yrs.

Fab car bed!
Really good decision.

Where is the bed from in your first picture?

feelinglike · 16/02/2020 21:35

@CopperMugs it's from Argos

None of those high / mid sleepers are recommended for the under 6’s.

@Pipnik I saw the Ikea bed but doesn't really give us the storage we need and it looks quite flimsy. I'd rather wait until he's a bit older.

I'd say too young. We would still get a semi-regular nighttime "thunk" of ours falling out at 4. At 5 she seems to have grown out of it and has the awareness to keep herself on the mattress.

No way too high. X
