Would you buy this for a 3.5 year old?

Hello mumsnetters

I need your opinion pls.

My DH and I need to replace our DS bed. He is still in his toddler bed but he's getting quite big for it.

We would like to invest in a bed he'll have for the next few years and that can provide us with the well needed storage.

DH wants to buy this bed but I think we should wait until DS is at least 4 ( he is 3.5 now) before buying a mid sleeper bed.

He says I'm overprotective and that DS will be just fine going up to his bed as there are steps and not a ladder.

Pls from your experience would you buy it or would you wait?

Thank you v much! X

No I think it’s too young

MrsJoshNavidi · 16/02/2020 16:07

I would.

NannyR · 16/02/2020 16:14

I wouldnt - I once looked after a four year old who had a similar bed and a teddy dropped over the side, she leaned over to try and get it and toppled out head first, she had a massive lump on her head and a broken arm from where she tried to break her fall. I know this was a "freak" accident and many young children use these types safely but it would put me off buying one.

feelinglike · 16/02/2020 17:10

Oh gosh your post freaked me out @NannyR

I wouldn't want anything like this to happen:-/

I'm now even more inclined to say no :-(

No I wouldn’t but I’m a scaredy-cat about top bunks. We have one with a high “barrier” and only let my older kids sleep there from 6 years (and I won’t let my 7 year old who moves a lot in his sleep and gets up to pee, use top bunk!).

SpeedofaSloth · 16/02/2020 17:17

We had a mid-sleeper from 5yo, and that was still a year earlier than the instructions recommended. 3.5 it a bit too young IMO.

negomi90 · 16/02/2020 17:24

Too young from a safety point of view.
Plus its a pain.
Its a pain to change the sheets on.
Its a pain to go in for cuddles/story time/bad dreams/night time chats.
He won't be using a desk in his room for a long time.
And it doesn't sound like you have another one who you need to put in that room (a la desperate for bunk beds).
Get him a nice single bed.

Janaih · 16/02/2020 17:26

No I would say 5 at least for this kind of bed.

Agree with pp pita to change sheets. Especially in the middle of the night Grin

FenellaMaxwell · 16/02/2020 17:28

Absolutely not. We had a child of about 4 brought in to A&E who’d managed to slip and nearly hang them selves with their pyjama top from the ladder

Figgygal · 16/02/2020 17:28

Absolutely not I have a 3 1/2-year-old and he also needs to come out of his toddler bed but we’re going to look for a relatively inexpensive standard single and will replace with a bunk in a couple of years if he wants one.

That bed is clearly for a much older child your dh is being silly

Hillbillyhotel · 16/02/2020 17:28

We put my son in a similar bed at around three and a half and he never had a problem so we switched straight over with my DD at around 2.5. She’s been in it for six months and again, it has never posed a problem.

Onceuponatimethen · 16/02/2020 17:44

I was told by the bed shop that the latest safety guidelines say no bunk styles until age 6

Onceuponatimethen · 16/02/2020 17:45

You need to bear in mind them coming down sleepy to go to the toilet in the night

Rainallnight · 16/02/2020 19:32

Nope. I have a 3.5 year old and I wouldn’t dream of it.

stealthbanana · 16/02/2020 19:37

Hmmm

I think it’d be fine but I would echo what the others say about it being a PITA to change sheets, have cuddles etc.

Just get an Ikea full size single (90cm wide) - with a trundle if you need an extra bed.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 16/02/2020 19:41

We put DD in a mid sleeper with steps (not ladder) at almost 4, in order to put DS in a floor bed underneath. I only felt able to do it because DD has slept in the top bunk on the sleeper train without any bother.
It's really child dependant.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 16/02/2020 19:43

(posted too soon) so why not consider getting a single mattress to be a floor bed now and then when your DS is old enough that you all feel a mid-sleeper is appropriate, get the bed to go with it.

Selfsettling3 · 16/02/2020 19:46

No.

phivephatphish · 16/02/2020 19:49

We did from 4, but everything @negomi90 says is true. It’s a total pain in the arse. Get a normal bed.

Socalm · 16/02/2020 19:52

No, too young. They use it as playground equipment, there's no stopping them.

tmh88 · 16/02/2020 19:53

I wouldn’t personally. Seems too young especially when getting up sleepy through night to go to the toilet etc. I struggle enough when I just wake up in the dark and I have no ladders/steps to go down Grin

BlueEyedFloozy · 16/02/2020 19:56

My 3.9yo went into the top bunk and had always been fine, we needed bunks though as mine share a room and my eldest likes to be enclosed (he's Autistic).

Ours have slanted step Ladders with a glow in the dark hand rail on each side to make night time waking safer for her as her eyesight isn't great!

If I only had one I probably wouldn't though.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 16/02/2020 19:59

We got a mid sleeper when DD was 4, we're going to change to a standard single soon, she's nearly 6. We've never had any problems or concerns about safety but is a total bastard to flip the mattress or change sheets and if she gets up in the night or is upset for some reasons we can't get in and cuddle her in her bed so she ends up starfishing in ours taking up every available mm of space so one of us ends up on the sofa.

Stick to a standard single or divan with under bed storage drawers would be my recommendation

Monsterjam · 16/02/2020 20:03

My now 4 yr old has been on top bunk for over a yr with no incident. We have a barrier up additional to the inbuilt one and put a might by the stairs that’s motion activated so lights up stairs if needed in the night

FakeFraudSquad · 16/02/2020 20:03

Nope. Too many accidental deaths due to hanging or falling out of bunk beds for me to consider them safe for a three year old.
