dd is 2.3 I've been thinking of moving her into a junior bed (it has little wooden bed guards at the top) but only thing stopping me is the fact that due to it being a novelty that she can now get out when she wants to. surely she wont stay in bed? how were your lo's when they moved from cot to bed? did you have to train them to stay there?

any advice appreciated, as I have been a bit hasty and in fact ordered the bed it due to come on tuesday. Now i'm doubting whther to put it up or not.

Erm yes they do... easily fixed though, novelty soon wears off.
We just put dd straight back to bed every time she did it with no talking other than 'back to bed now' (yes, took hours and upwards of 20 returns some nights) and after a night or two it was sussed. She's 3.5 now and NEVER gets out of bed after 7pm.

My dd is 2.3 and went into a bed 3 months ago, she rarely gets out of bed, I don't think she realised she could at first due to the cot guard. I now have to ask her to get out of bed, she'll lie there in the morning shouting for me to come and get her out! But if I tell her to come to us she will get out. She's fallen out twice, but only little bumps and I do find she wriggles alot so I have to move her about and tuck her in. The best bit is that when she's feeling rough and wants me with her I can get into bed with her and drop off to sleep as I got her a 3ft bed with decent mattress. It worked fine I'd go for it. We do have a stair gate on her bedorrm door in case she goes wandering but she's never needed it yet.

ds went into a bed at 18 months- he was getting out of the cotbed anyway! the grobag stops him venturing too far and he gets straight back into bed when he's told!

me23 · 22/08/2007 18:27

wow you have all got very obedient lo's. Sounds as it they have adjusted very well to their beds. No reason not to try with dd then as she is on the whole fairly 'good' at listening.

thanks for the reassurance.

my dd is almost 3. Been in her bed for nearly 6 and she STILL doesn't realise that she can get out of it!

I am NOT complaining.

msappropriate · 22/08/2007 18:34

yes in and out much more than when he was in a cot even though he could get in and out of his cot easily. ( and could do for over a year).

I waited till he was almost 3 as I couldn't see the point of doing it earlier. Hes a 98th percentile boy too,

It took several nights of returning him many many times before he got the hang of it.

He also fell out of bed several times too despite the cot guard. And he didn't wake up!

Yes she got out a lot when we moved her to her bed but she had taken to trying to crawl out of the cot which was much more dangerous

IdrisTheDragon · 22/08/2007 18:50

DD moved from cot to bed at about 22 months I think (she's only 23 months now ).

She's in a junior bed, with the little wooden guard at the top, and we also have a tomy bed guard at the bottom, and she hasn't tried to get out (I think she could if she tried, but she hasn't).

madamez · 22/08/2007 18:53

DS is 3 next month and still in a cot. I think it's probably time to buy a bed...

Slubberdegullion · 22/08/2007 18:56

Hear is the message of doom. Don't do it unless you have to.

dd2 has been in a bed for 4 weeks now (she was escaping out of growbag and then climbing/falling out of cot).

We are doing the rapid return technique.

Every night for tha past 4 weeks we have "rapidly returned" said child to bed at least 30 times. Every night, without fail. She shows no signs of tiring.

Excuse me while I return said infant to her bed.

We are currently planning our next move which may be a stair gate, multiple slinky attachements to pyjamas or chemical restraint.

muppetgirl · 22/08/2007 18:57

Our ds did get out of his bed and promptlt dropped both his morning and afternoon naps I had one heck of a week with him. Nightime was fine as he was sooooooo knackered from no sleep during the day. It os anovelty, it does where off but we helped it along by reverting to putting him back to bed and saying, 'it's time for your nap now'.

The problem we had was that he then started to climb things in his bedroom as he got the taste for climbing from getting out of his cot. (Hence the need for the bed!) He climbed on the windowsill -he's at the top of our 3 story house- and my neighbour rang the doorbell to tell me as he was waving at her. He then moved his bedside cabinet to the chest of drawers so he could climb onto the shelves and also moved it by the door so he could climb over the babygate. (this was all in the morning when he woke up)

This lasted a while but he's over the climbing phase and I am now warned for ds2 -due nov- in case he does the same!!

Slubberdegullion · 22/08/2007 18:57

doh HERE in the message of doom

muppetgirl · 22/08/2007 18:59

Oh and yes, I did take the bedside cabinet out but he then figured how to open the babygate and still escaped around the house to reek his early morning havok....

me23 · 22/08/2007 19:08

haha I'm hearing the other side now! oh slubber, how old is your lo? poor you sounds so stressful hope you sort it soon.

oh and I regret buying a cotbed as he kept falling out of the thing when it was a bed even with the side protection on!!! (He moves around alot in his sleep) We ended up buying a single bed and he's fine -doesn't even have the side thing on.

So he was out of his cot by 23/24 months and then out of the cotbed at 2.4/5 when it was supposed to last till he was about 4-5?

Slubberdegullion · 22/08/2007 19:12

well my "lo" just took her nappy off and then proceeded to crap all over the landing.

God give me strength.

If she wasn't so completely covered in the f'ing chicken pox and delerious with fatigue because she hasn't slept properly for the last 2 night then I would be completely livid.

Oh here she is again, with the toothbrushes.

(yes I have tried lying down with her /rocking her to sleep, but she is having none of it.

JARM · 22/08/2007 19:13

DD1 was 16mnths - needed the cot!

DD2 was 20mnths, yes she still falls out occasionally, but never had issues with them getting up

FrayedKnot · 22/08/2007 19:26

No, DS was the same age when we moved him and he never got out, until he was about 3. Often now (3.5) he still doesn;t get out, just sings or calls until we go into him.

babyblue2 · 22/08/2007 19:36

DD1 was 19 months and never got out
DD2 was 19 months and repeatedly got out so the good people of mumsnet suggested a stairgate over the door which solved the problem.

LiliAnjelika · 22/08/2007 19:59

Moved my 2.6 yr old lo into a cotbed two weeks ago. I'm nearly eight months pg and thought that it was better to do it now than with a newborn around. At first it worked like a dream. Then, at the stroke of midnight one night, she started calling for us ... and getting up. It's gone on ever since. In the beginning I was too knackered to deal with it and took her into bed with me for a few nights. Big horrible mistake. Now, I'm dealing with the consequences. We are also now doing the rapid return technique. Last night it took two hours and about 25 returns to get her to sleep. We had to hold the door while she literally flung herself at it countless times. Neighbours thought we had burglars and nearly called the police because of all the banging. Slubberdegullion, you are not alone.

Mistymoo · 22/08/2007 20:02

My dd was 18 mths when we changed her cot into a cotbed and she has been fine ever since. She'll be 4 in a few weeks

madamez · 22/08/2007 20:12

SLubberdegullion: what are you giving her for the chickenpox? Medised has a useful sleep-inducing effect...

Slubberdegullion · 23/08/2007 08:59

madamez...we are lobbing the entire arsenal of pharmaceuticals a 2 year old is permitted to consume, at her. Sleep finally achieved at 10.40pm. [knackered emoticon]

Millarkie · 23/08/2007 10:15

We moved ds into a bed because he was able to climb out of the cot (wearing a grobag) and we were worried that he would get hurt - so getting out of the bed was expected. We kept putting him back in and he had a stairgate across his room door (to stop him getting to the stairs) so he didn't come to harm and it wore off eventually.
