How long is too long for newborn to sleep?

Hi,
I have a two week old baby who is breastfed. He was born two weeks after expected due date (if that’s relevant).
He was 4.08kg at birth, lost 80g in first week then put on 250g in second week.
Last night he slept for 10 hours straight. He then had some little sleeps during the day, but not much, then feel asleep at 5.17pm and is still sleeping at 1.55am. That is 8.37 hours of sleep straight.
Is this ‘normal’? Is this too long? From what I’ve read if they’re gaining wait then you shouldn’t wake them for anything, they will wake themselves for changing, feeding etc.

Try posting in the Sleep or Parenting sections for a response as this is Secondary Education.

FWIW, that sounds like far too long at only 2 weeks old so I'd speak to my midwife or health visitor if I were you.

Has he been checked for jaundice? That can make them extra sleepy. Does he fall asleep very quickly during feeds?

Hi,
Thank you for the reply.
I didn't realise I was in the wrong section! I will repost in the correct one.

No, he's not jaundice. Plenty of dirty and wet nappies, eats a lot, is gaining weight and has times where he is content and alert.

BlueWonder he does fall asleep during feeds, but wakes.

It's very unusual for a newborn to sleep for longer than a 4-6 hour stretch. To be on the safe side I would ask your health visitor or midwife to check him over. At night I would be inclined to try and offer a feed after 5 or 6 hours (unless he wants one sooner). During the day I would offer a feed after 3-4 hours of sleep (unless he wants one sooner) If he is producing 6 heavy wet nappies in 24 hours his feed volumes are ok.
