Hi guys, what's everyone's opinion on cot bumpers, are they dangerous or is it possible to buy ones that are safe? Thanks!

Very dangerous.

Not worth the risk.

Why do you think you need one?

Flowersonthewall · 19/02/2019 21:48

Absolutely not.

Toadsrevisited · 19/02/2019 21:49

You don't need opinions when experts and evidence all tell you they are dangerous and can be fatal.

Why would anyone risk their baby's life for soft furnishing? www.lullabytrust.org.uk/parents-should-remove-cot-bumpers/

TrixieFranklin · 19/02/2019 21:49

I'd rather my child had a better chance of living through the night than a pretty coy

TrixieFranklin · 19/02/2019 21:50

*cot

moreismore · 19/02/2019 21:50

Have a look at aeromesh wrap as a safe alternative

Fantababy · 19/02/2019 21:51

Definitely dangerous. I'm really surprised how many places sell them.

1Violetcream · 19/02/2019 21:52

Apparently the aeromesh wrap also not safe. I read on a sleep experts article the other day.

TwinkleMerrick · 19/02/2019 21:52

I use the breathable bumpers on the side to stop my DD trapping her arms and legs through the slats. I tested them, by this I mean I wrapped them tightly around my own head to see if I could breath....I looked very silly but needed to check. They are fine. I wouldn't use the padded ones, no need for them at all. They are just for aesthetics and are dangerous.

WinkysTeatowel · 19/02/2019 21:53

Read this. Absolutely no way would I or have I used them. Never had a problem with them getting limbs caught in the cot.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 19/02/2019 21:53

I don’t see the point. Baby should be sleeping at the bottom of the cot- feet to foot, so they should be nowhere near the bumper anyway.

Cheerybigbottom · 19/02/2019 21:54

Avoid everything except Airwrap type breathable bumpers.

When I was first pregnant 8 years ago a shop assistant in babies r us admitted to me they look pretty (was a display) but were not recommended and I was not to buy one.

I bought the mesh air wrap 2 sides bumpers

LittleBearPad · 19/02/2019 21:55

Absolutely not

MadameJosephine · 19/02/2019 21:55

They should be banned, can’t believe shops are still actually allowed to sell them when the research shows they are a hazard

MillieMoodle · 19/02/2019 21:56

They're dangerous, don't use them.

We dont habe cot bumpers and my DC constantly wriggle up the cot and bangs their head on the top of the cot. The sound is horrendous.

However i always think it is better for DC to bump head than to get into difficulties with cot bumpers.

Easterbuns1 · 19/02/2019 22:11

If anyone is even contemplating putting cot bumpers on their baby's cot then please look on Facebook for "justice for Preston" and I guarantee reading about his parents hell will convince you they are a terrible idea.

I'd say I'm pretty laid back as a parent and generally respect people's choices but I would never stand by and let someone use cot bumpers without explaining the risks. A pretty nursery is never worth a dead baby.

nombrecambio · 19/02/2019 22:35

I used breathable mesh bumpers.

I absolutely wouldn't have the traditional bumpers.

Mine were awful wrigglers and would wake up with arms and legs twisted through the cot bars.

Farmerswifey12 · 19/02/2019 22:38

They are dangerous and as others have said, not worth the risk. I've had 3 children and never felt I needed them either. Once or twice my DS1 got a leg stuck in the bars, but I'd rather that than risk the bumpers.

I actually can't believe shops are continuing to sell them.

Findingthingstough18 · 20/02/2019 16:12

I don’t see the point. Baby should be sleeping at the bottom of the cot- feet to foot, so they should be nowhere near the bumper anyway.

You either have a very young baby or one who's a very placid sleeper!

DS makes his way around his cot through the night and I'd say 50% of his wake-ups are because he's either hitting his head against the top or because he has an arm or leg out of a gap in the bars. Despite this, I have not and will not buy a bumper, even a mesh one - my understanding is that even a breathable one has the possibility of coming partially detached and becoming a strangulation risk.

MustStopSnacking28 · 20/02/2019 16:14

They are unsafe and I don’t think they should still be allowed to sell them in shops! If you’re desperate put them on in the day or to take pictures of your cot but remove whenever baby is in there.

SherlockSays · 20/02/2019 16:22

I'd love it if DD (7 months) slept in the place I put her down, in the middle on her back.

Give her 10 minutes and she's on her side and got her arms and feet through the bars. Give her an hour and she's on her front with her head to the side at the opposite side to where she was.

Young babies may stay where you leave them - once they start rolling it's often game over.

So yes, I'd love for cot bumpers to be safe because I'm fed up of hearing her banging against them or getting stuck but her life comes first. I'm yet to come across anything that is a safe alternative.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 20/02/2019 22:15

Grin I must have had a very placid sleeper. Dd is 2 and I have never had any problem with her moving around in her sleep. She does sleep on her front with her bum stuck up in the air though.

megletthesecond · 20/02/2019 22:17

Dangerous.
They'll holler if they get their arms and legs stuck in the bars. And it's a short-lived phase.
