How much do most 2-year-olds sleep in 24 hours?

Curious to know. Dd, 23 months, seems to be cutting her sleep to 10-11 hours at night and 1-1.5 hours in the day which I would have thought wasn't enough for a 2-year-old.

So what do yours do?

DD (2 and a quarter) has cut hers right back to about 10 at night and an hour's nap about 3 times a week (when at nursery - won't nap at home, gggrrr). She is definitely tired at times - would like her to sleep more but can't get her to.

KateandtheGirls · 04/09/2004 21:09

Mine (29 months) doesn't usually sleep during the day at all and sleeps about 11 hours at night. Less than my 5 year old pretty often.

ijewels · 04/09/2004 21:14

ds (28mths) sleeps exactly one hour at lunchtime and exactly 12 hrs at night 7.30 to 7.30 - no need for a clock in our house. It never varies.

KateandtheGirls · 04/09/2004 21:16

Mine is all about variation. You can never tell from one day to the next. The 11 hours I said is just an approximate average.

dd1 use to sleep about 1 1/2 hours at lunch and then 11 - 12 hours at night but i stopped the day sleep once it interfered with the night sleep which for her was around 2 years old but everyone is different

ijewels · 04/09/2004 21:21

I've tried extending bedtime in the hope of a lie-in but all that happens is that i have a grumpy ds at 7.30 instead of a happy one!

KateandtheGirls · 04/09/2004 21:23

Twiglett, thanks for the chart. I like the question; "Does your child seem cranky, irritable, or overtired during the day?". Well, yes, but she is 2.

ijewels, I'm thrilled if I get to sleep past 6:30.

ijewels · 04/09/2004 21:26

Dear Kateatg, I will try to remember that in the morning! The sad thing is that it is saturday night and i have forgone the traditional night out on the town to go to bed early ....

I will probably be on mn till all hours and still be exhausted come 7.30am, but wouldn't change it for the world of course.

coppertop · 04/09/2004 21:28

Ds2 is 19mths and sleeps for about 7-8hrs at night with a nap of about 1-1.5hrs during the day if I'm really lucky. He is constantly running and climbing during the day so it seems to be all he needs.

So do most people think their kids do tend to cut sleep down around 2 years old? Trying to get my head around it.

7.30am start sounds heaven to me. Dd keeps getting up at 6am . Yawn ...

My DD is 2y 5m and has almost cut out her daytime nap entirely now. She maybe has a nap 1 day in a week, and then briefly. She will then sleep between 10 and 12 hours at night depending on what we have been doign during the day, time she actually goes to bed and if I have to wake her in the morning early (for nursery for example).

Oh, lucky you Twiglett. What time does he go to sleep? At the moment I'd kill for a 7am start to the day! Up until a month ago dd was sleeping 7.30pm-7.30am plus doing 2 hours in the afternoon. It's reduced so drastically recently, that's why I'm asking all these daft questions. .

DS has slept 11 hours at night, not at all in the day, since he was 20 months. Oh for the days of the 2 hr lunchtime nap...

zaphod · 05/09/2004 18:44

My 28 month old sleeps between 10 and 11 hours at night, and has about an hour, or hour and a half during the day. His naps do seem to be getting shorter though.

LIZS · 05/09/2004 18:47

Sounds about what our dd did at that age but by 2 1/4 had dropped a regular daytime nap. Now 3 she will usually average 11 hours at night and none in the day unless we are in the car for a prolonged period mid afternoon or it is excessively hot. ds had also dropped his daytime nap by 2.5 and has only ever done about 10 hours at night.

twick · 05/09/2004 20:19

And for those of you with toddlers sleeping under the required 13 hours per 24, do you think your child seems tired or do they seem fine? I must say dd is absolutely exhausted by teatime at the moment and keeps trying to make little 'beds' for herself all over the lounge. I'm going to experiment with an earlier bedtime for a bit and see what happens.

Hulababy · 05/09/2004 20:23

DD rarely gets 13 hours (as said in earlier post) but she seems no more tired than her friends who do nap. She normally seems a bit tired just after lunch, but has some quiet time if not at nursery. Might involve reading a book or two, watching TV or a video, or playing quietly with her Disney Princesses on the sofa - just for 30 minutes maybe. It seems enough to revive her. She is then ready for bed between 7 and 7:30pm normally, sometimes a bit later depending on what we are up to.

twick · 05/09/2004 20:59

And what time's she up Hulababy?

OP posts:
Hulababy · 05/09/2004 21:05

On my work days I have to wake her up at about 6:45am - which she isn't so keen on . If let to her own devices the other 4 days a week she will sleep to anytime between 7am and 8am. Sometimes a little earlier, but then she comes into my bed for a snooze.

susanmt · 06/09/2004 01:36

My ds is 31 months and sleeps 11 1/2 hours at night - 7pm - 6.30 am. He would still like a sleep in the day and does fall asleep some afternoons for about an hour, but if he sleeps any longer than that then he is a nightmare come bedtime and won't sleep, and if you let him stay up then he is a ghastly apparition at 6.30, but he wont sleep in at all! We do have 'peace and quiet time' after lunch when we watch a little tv or do something quiet and relaxing like reading stories or quiet playing on the sofa. This seems to do in place of a nap.

Dd1 was totally different. She slept 12 hours at night and now (at 4y7m) often does 13, and would still sleep in the day, in fact she sometimes does sleep in the afternoon when she gets home from nursery. At 2 she was still sleeping 2 hours in the afternoon and did until she was about 3 and a half.

Lets hope dd2 takes after her sister rather than her brother!

twick · 06/09/2004 10:07

That sounds like she sleeps much better than my dd, Hula. I've never ever my life yet had to 'wake' dd up.

susanmt, that sound like how much dd used to sleep before she went on her sleep reduction diet!

My DD who turned 2 on August 8th sleeps from 6.45pm - 7.30am and has one 2.5 hour nap in the day. so that's around 15 hours in a 24 hour period. However my friend's DD, who turns 2 in December only has around 12-13 hours in 24, including naps. She can go for 2 or 3 days without needing a day time nap.
