Colder nights and baby's grobags - what do you do?

Hello,
So now the temperatures are changing and it's bitterly cold outside, my groegg is also telling me that our bedroom was as cold as 17c this morning!
My DS sleeps in a sleep suit with a 2.5 tog (as recommended) but when I got him up and out his grobag at 6:45am his little feet were cool and his hands & face were chilly! I was debating putting him in a higher tog grobag but when you look at room temperatures and what's recommended, it will say 2.5 tog.
I feel slight mum guilt that he may be cold and surely his feet shouldn't be! It's only going to get colder too!
My heating is on but unfortunately we have wooden flooring in our room and that doesn't help hold the heat very well.
What do you mums do or what would you advise?
TIA Smile

17 degrees is fine as the recommended sleeping temperature is 16-20 degrees. You could put a vest under the sleepsuit if it gets colder. It doesn't matter about extremities as long as the midriff is warm. Did he wake due to being cold?

JWbs · 22/11/2018 07:52

He is wearing a vest also, I forgot to state that Smile everywhere else seems warm apart from his feet feeling slightly cooler and his head and hands were cold. Is this normal then? I'm so snug in my quilt so when I get him out his cot I think he must be freezing because I am Grin

And I'm not sure if he woke due to being cold - his wake up time can be around that time so I'm unsure!

At the moment we have DS in a 2.5 tog growbag with a vest and sleepsuit underneath. I've bought sleeping bag arms to use when winter really hits as I wouldn't go any higher in tog. His room is usually about 18/19 degrees. You could put a pair of socks on over his sleepsuit to keep his feet warm?

Didsomeonesaybunny · 22/11/2018 07:56

They say a baby needs one extra layer than an adult so you could add socks? My DD has built in hand mitts which I fold over so that her hands stay toasty warm

CurlsLDN · 22/11/2018 07:56

It's normal for babies to have cold hands and feet. As long as his middle is warm that's fine. If you notice he's waking more as the temperature dips then layer up more

dementedpixie · 22/11/2018 07:56

Sleeping bags are supposed to be sleeveless so I wouldn't use one with arms. If it gets colder you can put a cardigan and socks on or use a 3.5 tog bag

JWbs · 22/11/2018 07:58

Where did you get the grobag with arms?! I was looking online this morning but I haven't seen any in supermarkets!
Good tip to put socks over his sleepsuit, I will try that, thank you!

We use a 3.5 tog bag for our six month old in a 19 degree room (thermostat set to that). We found that she found it much colder than the guidelines predicted.

Atalune · 22/11/2018 08:00

I used to just layer a cellular blanket over the gro bag when I went to bed if they felt chilly

JWbs · 22/11/2018 08:01

You've all made me feel much better, thank you! I know they say this is the recommended temp for a room but it just feels so chilly and when I noticed his feet were cooler I thought it must be! I will try socks over his sleepsuit tonight!
I did see a thicker (fleacy) sleepsuit yesterday, that could be an option too Smile

Babies extremities- hands and feet - are always colder than their core, I was told at the hospital to touch the back of his neck to check he was warm enough. If you are really concerned about his feet you could put socks or booties on them and mitts for his hands but don’t overheat him as a whole.

dementedpixie · 22/11/2018 08:08

I wouldn't use the fleecy sleepsuit with a grobag though. You could try a long sleeved vest under the sleepsuit too. Grobag makes vests with thicker arms for using with a grobag. A grosuit I think

JWbs · 22/11/2018 08:13

I will try a long sleeve vest underneath - that's a better idea.
First time mum here & he's only 5 months old so don't judge BlushSmile

How old is he? Seventeen degrees is absolutely fine. My son is 2 and also sleeps in a 2.5 tog bag and his room usually drops to 15 overnight in autumn / winter - and has done ever since he was a baby. If it goes lower than 15 I tend to put an oil-filled radiator in his room on very low just to keep the temperature from getting ridiculously cold. Cold hands and feet are normal - I was told when DS was little not to check his temperature by feeling his hands and feet, but to feel his chest instead.

I also wouldn't use a thicker sleepsuit with a grobag. Look at the temperature guide it comes with and what clothing to put on. I keep my guide in a drawer with DS's pyjamas so that I can check it if I'm not sure. Mine says the 2.5 tog bag isn't suitable below 15 degrees, which is why I only put the portable radiator on if the temperature drops further than that.

Liz38 · 22/11/2018 08:15

I wouldn't rely on the baby wearing one more layer than you rule, it all depends on individuals. I'm a cold person and my daughter isn't, if I dressed her in more than me she'd cook! Or I'd freeze if I wore one less than her! Sounds like you've got him just right.

BadBadBeans · 22/11/2018 08:17

Just to clarify, I try to keep his room at 15 degrees minimum and only worry if it goes under that!

We used this when it was really cold last year, it’s a normal sleepsuit with thicker arms. Was very happy with it

JWbs · 22/11/2018 08:22

I always check the guidelines, I'm very good at that and I know I was always told to check back of neck and chest for their temp BUT I did notice today his feet were cooler than usual, which made me think maybe he is getting a bit colder. He is 5 months old and was born in a huge heatwave and was used to living in nappies for the first month or so of his little life, so he does like to be warm.
So much to learn with babies isn't there. Everyone's comments are thoroughly appreciated though, thank you.

I didn't get one with arms as I already had a few without so I just bought the arms. Slumbersac do them. DS is 6.5 months and we had the same panic about him being too cold (I'm also a FTM Grin). Haven't had to use them yet as it's been pretty mild.

scaredofthecity · 22/11/2018 08:40

I found the guidelines weren't enough for my 2. My 6mo DD is currently in long sleeve vest, warmer babygrow (thicker but not fleecy) and a cardigan plus her 2.5 tog grobag. Any less and she wakes up in the night as she's cold and takes ages to warm up enough to go back to sleep.

I'm not sure what the temp is in our room, but I've just got a normal 10.5 tog duvet.

The few nights it's been cold enough fire be to put a blanket on top, I've put a cellular blanket on top over her as well.

Hadalifeonce · 22/11/2018 08:44

I think if your DS was cold, he would wake up; so if he is sleeping well he must be comfortable.

Twatforahat · 22/11/2018 09:24

I was worried about this last night. Room was 14 and four month old was wearing a short sleeved vest, a baby gro and 2.5 tog, however, he only woke once. I might use a long sleeved vest tonight. It's hard when you feel cold yourself! He's my third baby and I'm still unsure about what he should sleep in!

JWbs · 22/11/2018 09:54

Exactly! I feel the cold and I think he does too. I will try socks and a long sleeve vest tonight I think and see how that goes. It's only going to get colder anyway so any advice is appreciated!

JW My baby is the same age, it's weird adapting to dressing her for the colder weather isn't it, when they were born in the heatwave? DD just wore vests for her first 6 weeks of life pretty much, we lived in a 3rd floor flat that was reaching temperatures as hot as 27 degrees sometimes! I have our heating thermostat set to 15 degrees overnight and I did say the Groegg go blue in the night last night, which I think was around the 15 mark but going to actually get off my lazy ass and check it tonight a few times when DD inevitably wakes for her dummy. She is currently in vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog but like you I'm wondering whether that's enough atm. I felt cold last night and want to get my big blanket to put on top of my duvet so considering putting the thermostat up to 16 over night or putting a thin blanket over her grobag, and/or booties on her feet, hmm...
