Don't hate me - my toddler likes lying in....

My ds (2 in a few weeks) seems to have become partial to a lie-in - 9am today. More often 8ish but sometimes 8.30.

I know I am ridiculously lucky! Is there any reason I should wake him up earlier - he still goes to sleep again at 1pm for a while although he is getting harder to settle at bedtime and now only goes to sleep at 8.

Is there any downside to this or should I just enjoy it?

Just as a matter of interest PinkTulips, what time do your children go to bed?

popsycal · 28/05/2007 07:20

"Is there any downside to this or should I just enjoy it?"

Want to swap so I can check out the downsides for you?

popsycal · 28/05/2007 07:22

I am with ghosty about the hours to kill thing...
Don't know whether to be or or to just cry

aDad · 28/05/2007 07:23

toddlers! Lying in! Blimey.

Not what you want to be reading popsy!

well, my 8 yr old woke me up this morning.

my DS4 had already been up, wanting milk and then exploding with poo at 5:20am. I don't mind that because its his job being only 4 months old.

Then my 8 yr old got up at 6am, just as I/we are falling back to sleep he starts effin singing!

so at 6:35am I get up and tell him "FGS....STOP SINGING!" but now DS4 is awake again.

Would it be unreasonable to gagg DS1 and tie him to the bed everyday so he can't wake me up??

popsycal · 28/05/2007 07:33

I think that is reasonable LTH

ghosty · 28/05/2007 07:36

Yes, I think that is entirely reasonable LTH

I remember sitting crying when DS was 4 thinking, "My 3 week old baby sleeps better than my 4 year old, how did that happen?"
The baby, now aged 3 years, is STILL a better sleeper than DS ...

boo64 · 28/05/2007 11:55

yes I just know if I ever have a second child I will definitely get one of the variety that wakes at 5am!!

I am totally grateful for his lie-ins but was just slightly worried he'd stop sleeping well at night due to staying in bed too long in the morning or he'd ditch his nap too early...

I think he has inherited mine and dh's laziness gene!

hunker... ds is just as good as dd

ghosty, they go to bed at 7.30... mommy and daddy have nervous breakdowns if they're up much later than that.

twinkle, you're right, he is cute

ghosty · 28/05/2007 13:31

So, your toddler regularly sleeps 16 and a half hours straight?

Wow!

What will you do when they start school?

fuzzywuzzy · 28/05/2007 13:33

swap with me please please just swap, my dd2 wakes up at sun rise and discusses with dd1 what she intends to have for breakfast.....sunrise is something like 4:30am

kittylette · 28/05/2007 13:37

We all get up at 9am

earliest is 8am!

boo64 · 28/05/2007 14:18

What time do yours go to bed kittlette?
Ds is now only going to sleep at 8 - might have to cut his lunchtime nap a bit.

Actually it might be that he is sleeping a bit later at the moment as he has a cold - usually wakes more like 7.45 or 8.15 but heck I'm not complaining!

mine (3.75) likes to lie in to 7.30 during the week, which is going to be fun when he starts at school in Sept, and has to be up by 4am at the very latest at the weekend "just in case".

kittylette · 28/05/2007 14:24

They go to bed at 7.30

PinkTulips · 28/05/2007 15:15

they do the very long lie in about once every 2/3 weeks. normal up time is 8.30, anything before 8 is a shock to the system

guess we'll have to do the same thing our parents did to get us up for school.... drag them out kicking and screaming and perfect the 10 min morning routine (no joke i could be in the car on my way to school within 10 mins of getting out of bed!)

expatinscotland · 28/05/2007 15:17

Mine both sleep for Scotland.

DD1 is nearly 4 and regularly sleeps till 10 or later.

DD2 is 1 and also sleeps till 9.30-10AM most days.

They both go to bed at 8PM.

Carmenere · 28/05/2007 15:22

My dd does this, she usually sleeps in until around 9 and often has to be woken up to get ready for the childminder at 10. the down side is that she is often still awake at 9-10 although she doesn't really get whingy-tired.

liath · 28/05/2007 15:22

I was gutted when dd dropped her daytime nap but she redeemed herself by sleeping 7pm to 8am most nights. It makes a big difference as I have a baby doing night feeds, I do feel very lucky. Thank goodness for blackout blinds !

expatinscotland · 28/05/2007 15:26

My 10-year-old niece still has lie ins till 10.30-11 at weekends.

boo64 · 29/05/2007 12:26

uh oh I think I tempted fate with this thread as he woke at 7.20am this morning....damn!

OP posts:
PinkTulips · 29/05/2007 12:59

lol, ds was 7.40 but he was still in his own cot after sleeping through the night with no feeds so i'll forgive him needed to be up for toddler group anyway!

herbiemom · 29/05/2007 14:14

Boo64 - oh you poor thing. 7.20am!! How will you get through the day!

I dream of my boys sleeping in til 7.20am. Actually, I'd be quite happy if they slept til 6.20. 5.20 is the norm in our house - tried everything believe me but cannot get them to sleep beyond about 5.30 - EVER!!

Lazycow · 29/05/2007 14:36

The only downside is if you work and they have to be out of the house by a set time.

We have to leave the house with a watered, pottied, fed and dressed ds so would be no good at all if he lay in. Would be good if he lay in when he went to bed late though - no such luck - just an early morning and a very grumpy child instead.

Other than that enjoy it!!
