Blackout blinds keep the heat in - house wont cool down

I'm going to add to the 'its hot' threads.

Just wondering with this hot weather if we are the only ones abit stumped by this. Our DS goes to bed at 7pm. The blackout blinds and curtains are down (need both due to the stupid gaps at the sides) but it blocks the fresh air if the window is open. Its still 28C in DS room. I have tried leaving the windows and curtains open in the hope i could shut them before sunrise (DS will never go back to sleep if bright after 4am) but its made no difference in the temp at all. Tried opening windows all day, closing all day, you name it this past week.

We.have a celing fan which i can put on but on ifs lowest setting. We were 'advised' not to use higher settings while sleeping. It of course stays hot in the room if this fan is on but atleast feels cooler.

Anyone else struggle with the blinds

I kept DD's blind and blackout curtains closed all day today with her door open and surrounding windows open. It was 24 in there when she went to bed so not too bad. I find opening the windows lets warm air in and then it's just harder to cool the room down again as opposed to not letting it get hot in the first place iyswim.

You need to keep the blinds and curtains shut during the day. Open them 1st thing to let some fresh air in but before the sun gets any strength and heat close them to keep the heat out.

I live in the NYC area and I'm used to high temps in summer.

Keep the fan on high during the day and keep the blinds closed all day. If you want 'fresh' air open a window in another room and a second window in an opposite room so there is airflow through the house. Do this in the first hour of daylight as it's relatively cool.

Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 05:23

Ah ok i will try it. I assimed having other windows in the house open would effect it the same way even if the nursery ones were closed. Hes woke every hours past 3 nights bless him.

Who advised you not to have the ceiling fan on high when sleeping? Did they give a reason why?

Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 07:03

Health visitor. Said it can cause chill on skin (he does get cool to touch) so the temptation is to put sleeves on (bodysuit etc ) but fans dont lower the temperature do they? Just feels cooler. Also respiratory issues. I duno. Will try suggestions, although think I may have tried this before. To me having other windows except the nursery open will still allow heat into the nursery. Heat rises and shifts doesnt it. Tbh i think we just have a house that doesnt cool very easily.

Poor little guy. Sweating all night. Woke every 2 for feeds. Don't blame him in that temperature.

Keep the blinds shut in the day to keep the heat out, open the windows when it is cooler in the early morning and evening. I shut the windows before I go to bed to stop the birds waking DS.

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/06/2018 07:14

Do you have a loft hatch you can open to let the heat rise out?
YY to keep the blinds down in the day. Makes loads of difference

Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 07:14

But all the blinds, windows and curtains in the house or just the nursery?

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 07:15

Yes we have opened loft hatch. Despite it giving my DH the 'heebie jeebies' Hmm

Buy a small air conditioning unit. They cost about 100. We have had ours for 12 years now and it gets used for about 2 weeks every year. Both our dd have one in their rooms for days like these. It means they get a decent sleep at 21 degrees no matter the weather. We have solar panels which offset the electrify usage too.

They are noisy but it is a constant white noise and it has never bothered ours. In fact they love it when they get to have them on, they cheer!

Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 07:27

Aww bless. Not a bad idea. DH dont half moan about the heat too so could be win win. It doesnt seem to bother me too much but it's horrible when I cant do anything for DS. As a pp said, if i leave the windows open the birds wake DS at 4am and that will be that. Plus this blind just blocks any heat transfer. Its tricky. Another thing you dont think about until you have a baby! DS is happy as larry now its cool downstairs and the windows are open. Fx i can stop it rising again Confused

Take a tip from the southern Europeans. Have a nap during the day then stay up in the evenings. Blackout blinds should be down during the day. Then lifted morning and evening to let in the cooler breeze.

Jellybabie3 · 27/06/2018 07:38

Thanks all ☺

I do all the upstairs blinds. Downstairs the south facing ones then plenty of doors and windows open

We have the exact same problem and yesterday morning covered the inside of the window with tin foil! It really has made a great difference, reflecting heat, not absorbing it in. Looks odd but works!

Jellybabie3 · 01/07/2018 22:18

Haha the drug growing look. Its currently 38.6Cin DS room so i will try anything

JML have brought out a AC unit last up to 6-8 hours £39.99 I have only seen it in Asda try that for little one have not bought one yet but my plan too on Tuesday wait 😊

drspouse · 02/07/2018 07:48

Hope things went Ok last night. There is nothing wrong with a ceiling fan for babIes, HV I take it is British and not used to heat! It will cool down the baby which is the point. You can also put a wet sheet over a very hot baby.
Don't forget to open your window when the sun is off the room and shut the blinds when it's on that side.

welshweasel · 02/07/2018 07:50

Another vote for aircon. We bought one last week after having exactly the same problem. It’s amazing. Also I think your HV is talking bollocks about the fan.

Jellybabie3 · 02/07/2018 08:14

Ah OK thats interesting. I was warned DS could dehydrate. Last night he woke every 2 hours and wanted to feed. I'm sure as hell not gonna stop him but this heatwave is taking its toll 😴

Jellybabie3 · 02/07/2018 08:17

OK the sun has just whiped round so i have shut the window and blind on that side of the house. Its now still 26C so didn't have much time to cool since he woke. All other windows are open

OP posts:
Flicketyflack · 02/07/2018 08:20

Is it best to keep windows completely shut or are they ok 'on latch'?

Dodie66 · 02/07/2018 08:30

Another one her that uses foil. Stick it to the window so that you can still open the windows. It works.
Also downstairs I keep all curtains drawn across and windows shut the side where then sun is and open doors and windows where there isn’t any sun. Thenin the evenings I open all doors and windows will bedtime to let the air blow theough
