ginger am such a d**k didn't see your post explaining you'd started this thread etc. got think i'm still in sleepy holiday mode! x

MegBusset · 04/06/2007 10:07

Hello all,

I have been a lurker and occasional poster on SIFTW threads, but looks like I may become a regular as DS, 14 weeks, is giving us some night-time fun and games after being a good little sleeper (mostly) until a week or so ago. Hard to believe that a couple of weeks ago he was waking just once at 4/5 for feed, and I thought he might be getting ready to sleep through.

Last night he woke up 5 times - sleep at 7.30, awake at 8, 12, 3.30, 5, 6 and then in bed with us til 8. Maybe it's the hot weather making him more thirsty?

Tamdin · 04/06/2007 10:08

ginger yay for settling herself in cot and Hi tibs have missed you all . gotta go got more bloody viewing s today so taking ds to see my mum to stop him making a mess. the washing isn't dry...would it put you off buying a place if there was washing hanging up on the drying rack?

tibsy · 04/06/2007 10:09

to be fair, she has got another tooth coming through, so i think it was that, but aarrgghh nonetheless
she just wanted to be permanently latched on (for comfort i guess) but it meant me lying in an awkward position and getting no flaming sleep....
i feel really chuffed off today and its unlike me, so i hate it! think its a combination of little sleep, having alcohol over the weekend (bit of a comedown) and just having had a period - pita
will give myself a good talking to and cheer up

tibsy · 04/06/2007 10:13

sorry ginger, yay for lo settling in cot
tam, it wouldnt me, but there are some funny people out there
megb i know how you feel, it could well be tho, i was really thirsy last night myself. did your lo feed at all 5 wakings?

MegBusset · 04/06/2007 10:21

Tibsy, he did feed, but then I almost always offer the boob when he wakes at night 'cause he rarely says no and it's the easiest way to get him back to sleep!

Also he had a bit of a blocked-up nose (hay fever?) which I think kept disturbing him.

It's just so hard to accept nights with multiple wakings when we'd been spoilt with just 1/2 wakings for so long. Let's hope it's just a phase (a short one, please)

Tamdin · 04/06/2007 10:22

thanks tibs. sod it have to leave it as rushing out the door now and won't be back before viewing. catch you all later x
Hi meg

tibsy · 04/06/2007 10:30

meg, if he's just taking a little at each time, may well be that he's thirsty. i know dd does that. she also does it when shes teething. bfing is very good for all eventualities and although i really love it and intend to carry on for the duration, some nights, i wish i could hand me boobs to dp to take over!!

MegBusset · 04/06/2007 10:51

Also LO's naps seem to be changing so I wonder if that is affecting his night-time sleep. Previously he was having 4/5 30-minute naps a day (would only nap longer if held). But the last couple of days he has had a longer morning nap in his bouncy chair - been asleep this morning for an hour already {shock] but then still just a 30-min nap at lunchtime and early afternoon, then refusing to nap after 4 , so needing an earlier bedtime.

Confusing little creatures, aren't they?

tibsy · 04/06/2007 10:57

meg, dd always used to be a 30 min napper unless held, she now has 2 X 90 mins naps as a rule, although thats only recently. (shes 9 months) just when you think you've gone and got 'em sussed, they throw something else into the equation
gotta go, have got my first aid course this a.m catch you later

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 11:08

meg, apparently they do give up that late afternoon nap and hence need earlier bedtime. my LO still likes his late arvo kip though, he hasn't read that book yet.

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 12:41

my LO is so odd. he only eats before naps and in the night, even if he seems quite hungry at other times he just refuses. funny little man. he's meant to be having a nap now, but i can hear him thumping in his cot. for the sake of the afternoon i hope he has a decent sleep!

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 12:46

hey meg, i was just looking at DS's weight gain pattern, and actually he put on a huge amount from week 14-15, about double what he normally does. so you just never know if its a growth spurt - hang in there, i'm sure it won't be forever! xx

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 12:53

hey meg, i saw you live in enfield on your profile, there is an awesome swimming thing for babies run by born to swin www.borntoswin.co.uk at southbury leisure centre. i've been going and i don't even live anywhere near, but i think its really awesome (and so does LO).

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 12:53

ok, so i can't spell.

Slim · 04/06/2007 13:04

Amber: glad to hear your nights are steadily improving

Tibsy: I find that DS feeds lots just before (and during) my period - think I read somewhere that the hormones can affect milk supply.

DS still snuffly - perhaps it is hay fever and not a cold? He doesn;t have a temp. Not sure what I can do - tried a bit of Olbas oil, raising head of cot and he still wakes. Iget hay fever so I can understand how miserable he must be feeling. And have found there's nothing you can get over the counter if you're bfing

Meg: the long morning nap sounds good. Hope this is just a phase and you'll go back to 1 or 2 wakings. DS has done that before, but he's been on a 2-hr waking jag for a while now.

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 13:09

slim, here is some info from breastfeeding network on hayfever treatment. i suffer myself but hasn't been necessary to try to treat it yet, it just flares up when i go to the park.

Treatment of Hayfever During BReastfeeding

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 13:11

i don't know what you can do for LO though ... i think medised has some decongestant if i'm right?

Slim · 04/06/2007 13:17

Tried Medised but it didn't seem to help much. Thaks for the link - may have a look for a nasal spray and not mention that I'm bfing

MegBusset · 04/06/2007 13:47

Slim - I have been using Beconase nasal spray, AFAIK it's fine for BFing. (Last summer I had hay fever and all-day morning sickness at the same time - boy, was that a fun few weeks.) Plus Opticrom eye drops.

Amber - what age was your LO when you started the swimming classes? I'm definitely interested, he loves the bath so I suspect will be a real water baby. But not sure if he's still too little for it. Also at the moment he is having a bad eczema flare-up which I'm sure the chlorine wouldn't help too much...

bagsundereyes · 04/06/2007 15:27

hello all,

dd had immunisations this morning so her lunchtime nap (normally the most likely to break the 30 min barrier) bit the dust.

I have just got her down down. Anyroad, I was thinking, what are your experiences of swaddling. DD is quite "flappy", but the only times I've swaddled her in a light sheet, with no extra bedding she sweats buckets and wakes up. Any thoughts? The problem might also be that I'm a bit crap at swaddling, as she has on each occasion got at least one arm out.

tibsy · 04/06/2007 16:07

bags, i swaddled dd when she was newbornish to a few months old. twas autumn/winter then tho and worked very well with her. stopped her thrashing and waking herself up.
then she got to the stage where she was able to wrestle herself out of it and short of winding duck tape round and round, i couldnt stop her
i believe you can buy swaddley things that fasten, but you've still got the problem of overheating in this weather

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 17:02

hi meg, we started swimming about 4 months, but i understand they take them from 8 weeks old. i thought the sameas LO loves his baths that he would take to swimming. he really loves it until he gets tired ... but it is great seeing them have so much fun and kicking their little legs in the water.

Amberjee · 04/06/2007 17:04

swaddling was good for us for a while when ds would get overtired, swaddling seemed to get him to sleep easier. though the weather was cooler then, i'm not sure about now...

Tamdin · 04/06/2007 20:57

evening all. have had a 'successful' day with ds and his sleeping. went to visit my mum today and he napped for 2 hours in a travel cot at her house. to some this might sound like no big deal but for us it's fantastic. Mainly because 99% of the time he has his nap at home and also because my mum has tried him before on 2 occasions when babysitting and he was having none of it. i popped him in the travel cot gave him his dummy and blanket and left the room. He chatted to himself for a few mins and then went to sleep The holiday may have been a bit stressful but maybe it's made him more relaxed about differing sleeping options. He also went down tonight in 5 mins. Don't worry knowing my luck he'll prob be up half the night now! x
