Bags, How about gaffer tape?

Amber, I found weaning something else to stress about because they never flippin eat anything. My DD (9 months) has only just started properly eating. I started BLW but found it didn't really suit my control freakiness and that I needed to be sure she was actually eating so I ended up making 2 meals at every sitting. One of finger food that she would smear around the table and the other of mush that she would flatly refuse or just about open her mouth for then spit straight back out. Ahhh, I wouldn't be quite so eager to wean the next (next? )

Nap times are almost settling back into a bit of a routine here, well as much as they do. We have a 10ish and a 2ish although just as yu think you've got it sorted......

Tam, My lo was also having a baby disco last night. Chucked all of her toys out of the cot and 'climbed' the bars. Lasted about an hour. We've had this for the last 3 nights weird or what.

Tibsy for your night hope tonight is better. We had 11pm, 3pm 5 and 6 for the day. DH settled her after her disco at about midnight and I brought her into bed at 3. She had a huuuggee nap this morning and fingers crossed for this afternoon.

Bags, re waking for dummies. Something I remind myself when I feel like lobbing the dummy across the room is that my mum said that me and my sibs all had dummies and never woke for them in the night so who is to say that our LO's wouldn't wake anyway and you'd have to find another way of getting them back to sleep. At least a dummy settles them quickly. My LO when through a stage at about the 4 month mark when she was waking allllllllll the time and we would just replug thinking it was the dummy. She is much better these days tho (sometimes we have to replug but once she's in a deep sleep it doesn't seem to bother her)

hi tibs, had a quick look at weissbluth's book. around 9 months they should be going to 2 naps a day around 9ish and 1ish. he says the second nap should start between 12 and 2. he advocates a 7am start to the day (even if that means waking them up - sigh), so that the naps can be taken at the appropriate times. he goes on a lot about 'age appropriate' naps and sleep, and i think he has a point though maybe he's a bit dogmatic at times. he says babies should go to sleep between 6 and 8pm at night, and that once the late afternoon nap is dropped, their bedtime may shift more towards 6 as they will be tired earlier.

anyway, easier said than done. but i found trying to work with 2 set naps at 9 and 12 to be quite good, and a variable afternoon nap.

gingerninja · 15/06/2007 16:36

That's what I love about them books. Sounds peesy on paper. Now what about the days that start at 5? You're screwed before you start. That was always the problem I had example this morning, laid DD at 9.30 down when she was tired after some milk and she rolled about for ages and then did a poo. All the settling I'd done was for nothing. It took me about an hour to get her to sleep and it's not like she wasn't knackered. If I hadn't 'bothered' so much about when was appropriate I probably wouldn't have been so annoyed at 'wasting' that hour. Amber, not at you just find those books give me false hope. They make me feel like it's dead easy when in reality..... I must be doing something wrong...

Slim · 15/06/2007 17:48

Ginger: you are NOT doing anything wrong! When I find it impossible to get DS to nap cos all he wants to do is sit up I just give up and wait 45 mins or until he looks sleepy again. I was trying to regiment a 10 and 2 routine but DH has made me ease up a bit . And more often than not, he does sleep at those times.

Meg: did you get your referral OK?

MegBusset · 15/06/2007 20:28

Ginger, I did try to follow the Baby Whisperer but chucked it out when I realised DS was never going to nap as long as he was supposed to, and would have meant feeding every two hours as opposed to when he was hungry.

We got the referral sorted today so DS should be off to a specialist in a few weeks. Today his skin has looked a lot clearer than it has done for weeks; I wonder if the Allergenics (which made his skin bright red and sore, then peel) somehow managed to improve the eczema anyway? Anyway we have got yet more emollients (Doublebase and Dermol this time) to try until we can get an expert opinion.

DS went down fine today but just now screamed at the very top of his voice... I rushed in to help and he wasn't really awake, but still crying loudly, so I shushed loudly in his ear and he seems to have gone back to sleep. What was all that about?!

Amberjee · 15/06/2007 20:47

ginger, i'm a bit the same about the books. i guess i was just really struggling with naps, and so i got some ideas about how to go about it. i try to accept that some days just don't work, and i just give up that day and go and hang out in a cafe and have LO sleep in the sling, and start again the next day. and some days LO will get up at 5am, and go back for a nap at 7 when he should be getting up, hopeless. i guess i just try not to get uptight and use the ideas as a guide. but i honestly do think LO has slept better since i try to put him to bed at similar times.
though i also think timing has to be right, and probably some LOs are better with structure and some without.
its such a tricky business

Amberjee · 15/06/2007 20:48

ps. ginger, none of us are doing anything wrong! we are totally trying our best whatever happens.

MegBusset · 15/06/2007 21:13

DS still unsettled , have been in another time to shush him cos he was crying his head off (but still eyes shut and seemingly asleep), mind you I remember him going through a phase of this around 8 weeks.

Also there is a really bloody loud bird chirping away just outside the bedroom window, I can hear it through the baby monitor! Think I might have to go shoot it...

Slim · 16/06/2007 08:14

Did the bird finally shut up?

Muttering darkly here - DS decided to swake up and bounce about his cot at 4am and didn;t go backto sleep till past 5, then awake again at 7. No idea why! He is now trying to clean the floor with a pack of baby wipes - off to find him a duster

Slim · 16/06/2007 08:15

Amber: DS also generally happier with regular naps, even if it doesn't work sometimes. Might be because I'm more relaxed knowing he's getting regular sleep?

Amberjee · 16/06/2007 09:05

4am, slim. blah! at least he's trying to help with the housework

Slim · 16/06/2007 09:06

He's just tipped his toy box over the floor so it's all relative

MegBusset · 16/06/2007 09:47

Morning!

The bird did shut up in the end... after I set our cat on it . Only joking, of course...

Well, last night was actually OK. After the evening's crying out shenanigans, he settled down. Woke for milk at 1 and 4, I vaguely remember having to turn him round as he'd got stuck sideways in the cot at some point, then at 6.30 he was awake and chatty so we brought him into bed where he went back to sleep til 8

The turning round in the cot is happening several times a night, DH reckons we should put him in sideways to start with and see if he ends up the right way round

tibsy · 16/06/2007 19:23

evening all
meg, glad you got the referral sorted and dd does that, re. turning around in the cot. gets in the most peculiar positions

amber, thanks for looking re. naps. dd has been with her gramma and bampa (and ds)today and has slept for a total of 15 mins this a.m and 30 mins this afternoon they said she was as good as gold tho

has already woken once tonight tho, so not holding out much hope last night was pretty crappy, but out of the 4 teeth coming through, 2 have emerged and the other 2 are coming. poor little thing has really been struggling with them, so all 'routines' are out the window. got to go with what she needs atm.

it was really wierd this afternoon, dp away for the weekend and as ds and dd were at the grandparents for the day, i came home after work to an empty house!!!!!!!!! havent had that since dd was born. most srange and not sure i liked it

hope everyone else has had good days and hope we all have good nights too

MegBusset · 16/06/2007 19:46

Hiya Tibs, quiet day around here!

Had a lovely day as my parents are over from France this weekend, it's my 30th birthday tomorrow so we're all going out for lunch, will be DS' first time in a restaurant!

Naps all fine today and just gone down without a fuss (fell asleep on boob and I wasn't going to argue with that), but his eczema has been pretty bad today so we'll see. Maybe he will decide to give his mum an early bday pressie and sleep soundly til 8am

Amberjee · 16/06/2007 20:51

happy birthday megs!

and tibs, it is weird when suddenly you're all alone. i went to the breastfeeding course on tuesday without ds, which was so weird. we were apart for 3 hours, the longest time ever .... i'm not sure if i like it either. am i going to be one of those mothers who has trouble letting go??

tibsy · 17/06/2007 07:38

morning all, and happy birthday meg!!!
hope you have a great day

amber, i thought it would be easier to let go this time around. turns out i've been worse!!!

our night improved after being up and down the stairs every 30 mins , she slept from 9.30 ish to 3.15am brought her in with me after that, so the rest is a blur woke at 6.30, so not too bad

hope everyone else managed to get some shut eye?

bagsundereyes · 17/06/2007 08:39
