Just that really was wondering as DS is starting to climb out of the cot now he is 21 months and I'm scared he going to hurt himself?

2.5

dementedpixie · 18/03/2018 20:35

2 and a half

Cantchooseaname · 18/03/2018 20:37

This week- 22 months. For same reasons. It’s been fine! Put length of foam pipe insulation under sheet along side. Only fallen out once.
Did a lot of rearranging/ tidying first.

CoodleMoodle · 18/03/2018 20:38

DD was about 3. We were planning on moving her into a single bed but she fell in love with a toddler bed in a charity shop and that was that! She's not very adventurous though, we never had to worry about her climbing out.

FATEdestiny · 18/03/2018 20:39

My 3y6m old is still in a cot and sleeping bag.

She undoes her own sleeping bag and climbs out of the cot herself when she wakes after a sleep. No big deal her being in a cot, it gives her security and comfort.

Teaching toddler not to climb out of the cot is exactly the same as teaching a toddler to stay in bed. Only a million times easier when in the cot.

Cot climbing is a behaviour issue, not a sign baby is 'ready' to move to a bed. In fact likely a sign baby is not emotionally ready. Treat it like you would any other unwelcome behaviour.

Dd is still in a cot and sleeping bag at just under 2. We're planning to move house this time or slightly later next year, so I want to keep her in her cot until then. Once we've moved, we'll get her a new bed and she can move out of the cot.

TheBlindspot · 18/03/2018 20:56

We've just tried, and my DD is only just 2. Only because I'm pregnant and was struggling to bend over the side to pick her up when she was asleep to change her nappy if she was wet when I went to bed (if I didn't change her then she'd be wet through by morning).

We've had to change back to the cot (it's a cotbed so no big deal) She just wasn't ready. Absolute hysterics ensued. Normally, in her cot I put her in a sleeping bag, say goodnight, give her a kiss and she goes to sleep. In the the bed, even after a week she was crying for hours, getting out of bed etc unless I sat in with her.

I've solved the wetness issue with different nappies, so we'll try again at a later time.

16mo and 14mo. It had the added bonus of finally getting DD1 to STTN, which is why DD2 was moved when a couple of months younger misplaced optimism We made the change as we like the Montessori-style bedrooms rather than cot climbing issues though.
We found the transition very easy as they were so excited about the move.

Flamingoringo · 18/03/2018 21:11

Dc1: 3.5
Dc2: 3
When they used to try and climb out I said ‘no’ and put them back, praise for staying in. Unless you don’t mind.

NameChangeDestroyer · 18/03/2018 21:12

2.5 years old. Dp insisted because she was climbing out of the cot and I was bored of arguing that she was fine. We have a bed rail, she doesn't need it for physical safety but I think she likes the cosiness of it.

Babdoc · 18/03/2018 21:14

15 months, as I was 8 months pregnant with DD2 and we needed the cot for the new arrival! I did it 4 weeks before the birth so DD1 wouldn’t feel she’d been thrown out at the same time the baby arrived - she had 4 weeks to get used to her “big girl’s bed” first.

sunshineintheclouds · 18/03/2018 21:20

When she started climbing out, about 2 if I recall.

Never fell out bed but it was a small toddler bed anyway so not far to fall Grin

LaceandChintz · 18/03/2018 21:20

Dd was around 18m, DS was younger than that. Both of them transformed their sleep patterns once in a bed. For the record, the bed was enclosed on 3 sides and the 4th side had one of those children's bedsides on it. So they had masses more space to do nighttime rotating with banging heads against bars or getting wedged sideways.

IMBU · 18/03/2018 21:22

Around two. Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Pennywhistle · 18/03/2018 21:23

We moved our twins at 20 months. They were climbers and it wasn’t safe.

Bubblysqueak · 18/03/2018 21:24

2 yrs for ds1 and 14 months for ds2 as he kept waking himself up by banging himself on the side of the cot.

ThatGirl82 · 18/03/2018 21:27

FATE, how long do you plan on keeping your child in a cot for? Yes, climbing out may be behavioural but if it’s safe then why not move to a bed? They have to move to a bed at some point.

MynameisJune · 18/03/2018 21:28

2 and 3 months. She’s in a single bed with an inflatable mattress on the floor in case she falls out. She has fallen out once and stayed asleep as she landed on the other mattress.

We like the Montessori style of having everything at her height for her to chose from.

spnfan · 18/03/2018 21:33

DD was 13 months. As with pp we preferred the Montessori approach and she'd already been walking for 4 months so it felt like the right time for her.

TittyGolightly · 18/03/2018 21:34

17 months.

FATEdestiny · 18/03/2018 21:40

FATE, how long do you plan on keeping your child in a cot for?

Dunno, DD is in no rush, neither am I. There has been an empty single bed with Peppa Pig bedding in her room from when she first moved in there, so it's there if she wants it. It's moving from sleeping bag to duvet that I suspect will cause more upset than bottle you bed.

My older 3 children were a few months after their 3rd birthday when they moved into a bed. Youngest is just in no rush and being in a cot is doing her no harm.

sourpatchkid · 18/03/2018 21:42

6 months but then it's a double mattress on the floor and I'm in it too.

He's only fallen out once though and he's 15 months now.

CrabbitArse · 18/03/2018 21:52

Mine was 4 in December & still in a cot Blush
She's has ASD though & won't sleep unless physically restrained, better a cot & grobag than me having to pin her down all night.

Mar19901 · 19/03/2018 07:23

Thank you all for your replies I think he is ready to be moved in to a bed now.

Fate

Teaching toddler not to climb out of the cot is exactly the same as teaching a toddler to stay in bed.

I disagree, a toddler getting out of bed is not at risk of any harm. A child climbing out of a cot could well be at risk of injury from falling, getting trapped, getting fraught and choking.

I didn’t actually find keeping them in bed a particular problem tbh once we moved them over.
