9 o'clock on a school night is too late. Having said that, ds1 (just 6) goes to bed at 7.30ish but is often still awake at 9. He never struggles to get up for school and is never tired after a late night. Ds2 otoh cannot cope with a late night and is a nightmare the next day and often falls asleep - he is 4.5.

Gingerbear · 07/05/2007 19:44

7.30 - 8pm. later at weekends and Bank Hols.

JodieG1 · 07/05/2007 19:45

7 usually on a school night, no later if we can help it. Sometimes she goes earlier as well and she still sleeps all night. She really needs her sleep especially when she's at school. 9 is far too late imo.

Saturn74 · 07/05/2007 19:45

Depends on the child.
If they are tired or struggling to concentrate at school, then their bedtime needs moving to an earlier time.
DS1 is a night owl, and has never gone to sleep before about 9:30pm, even when he was little. But at age 5 he was in bed by 7:30pm.

OutragedfromTunbridgeWells · 07/05/2007 19:46

7-7.30pm. has a story tape on though and then usually asleep about 7.45ish.

9.00pm seems too late imo.

twentypence · 07/05/2007 19:47

9pm would be too late for me to still have a child up.

hayes · 07/05/2007 19:48

my dd goes down at 8 and she is 5

Hulababy · 07/05/2007 19:49

On a school night DD goes to bed at 7:30pm and is normally asleep well before 8pm. On a weekend she gets to stay up later and sometimes it is very late. It was 10pm twice this weekend. Luckily though DD always sleeps for about 10-12 hours so we have had some long lie-ins as a result

WigWamBam · 07/05/2007 19:49

9pm is far too late imo. A 9pm bedtime would turn my dd into a nightmare - if she gets tired, her behaviour goes downhill, her temper shortens and she throws paddies. She's almost 6 and has had the same bedtime for ages - she goes up for a story at about 6.45 - 7pm, so she's in bed and the lights out by about 7.15 - 7.30. No exceptions; bedtime is cast in stone and weekends/holidays are exactly the same as school nights.

foxinsocks · 07/05/2007 19:50

mine (age 5 and 6) are in their bedroom by 7/7.30.

However, since the Easter holidays, I would say the 5 yr old has still been making a noise till about 8.45pm (grrrr). But he's in his room - I can hear him talking to his sister and messing about.

Earlybird · 07/05/2007 19:53

DD (age 6) in bed by 7. Bedtime story/chat for 20 mins or so, and then door closed by 7.30 at latest. However, with longer/lighter days she looks at books for 30 mins or so before dropping off to sleep.

cece · 07/05/2007 19:54

DD in bed by 8 but can be still heard playing quietly in her room till about 9 ish. Most of the time this is fine but sometimes she gets too tired.

oxocube · 07/05/2007 19:55

hi nappyaddict. I must confess that my youngest of 3 who is 5 yrs, often goes to bed btwn 8.30 and 9. I think it is probably too late TBH but he gets up at 8 for school and is usually fine and happy. My other kids are almost 10 and 12 which puts the whole routine back a bit, with their clubs and activities which often finish after 7.30 pm, then I have to do pick -up etc. When I just had ds1, he was in bed by 7 at this age

LIZS · 07/05/2007 19:58

I aim for 8 but it is often later and she is usually still awake at 8.45.

fennel · 07/05/2007 20:00

5yo goes to bed at 7-7.30pm, though she often reads for an hour. My 7yo and 3yo go at about the same time too, and they all get up at 7.

Later in the holidays.

my dd is just 6 and is in bed at 7.30/8.00.

I usually have to wake her in the morning (on a school day obv.)

When she was in Reception she would be in bed (and asleep) anytime between 6.30 and 7.15.

cardy · 07/05/2007 20:09

My dd get's into bed about 7.30 and has stories until about 7.45/7.50. She is usually very ready to go to sleep by then.

MrMariella · 07/05/2007 20:20

9pm is pretty late for 5 .yo. Dd at 7 y.o. MAY get to stay up that late on a Saturday, if we are out and about somewhere, but not as a rule.

nappyaddict · 07/05/2007 20:21

the problem is she has twins. one is always awake in the morning before she needs to go and wake them up, but the other one is always fast asleep, so probably needs a bit more sleep, but ican't see them agreeing to going to bed at separate times.

7.00 for 7.30.

8.00 at weekends.

tigi · 07/05/2007 20:40

7pm (and my 7yo too) else sooooooooo grumpy next day!

lucykate · 07/05/2007 20:41

dd (5), and ds(2), both go to bed at the same time, in bed at 7 for stories, lights out at 7.30, even at weekends.

they don't sleep in late, so if they are in bed late, all we end up with is over tired children rather than a lie in

Hassled · 07/05/2007 20:43

My nearly 5 year old goes up at 8, is read to till about 8.20, then faffs about until his brother comes in at around 9 (bunk beds) - and is then up before 7 am next day, bright as a button. So much depends on the individual child - my older ones were asleep by 7.30 at aged 5.

Budababe · 07/05/2007 20:44

Apt thread as my 5.9 yr old is still up and we are an hour ahead of you guys in UK!

But he discovered football on TV so that was that.

I prefer him to go a 8/8.30. Any earlier and he is up too early.

Am about to get him to bed. Am just too soft and DH arrives home at 7.30ish so we then start doing dinner for us. Need to get DS to bed first in future.
