Baby sleeping in snowsuit

Blueberrycheesecake1 · 01/03/2018 15:19

I accidently discovered today that my 8 week old will fall asleep by himself during the day when put in a snowsuit. Which is great as had previously had to go out in sling/pram to stop him from getting overtired in day.

I was watching him and unzipped the suit when he was asleep so he wouldn't overheat.

I'm worried about sids risk but also a small part of me wonders if I could put him in it tonight. Our house is so cold and even with heating on our bedroom is 2c at the moment. He slept badly last night mostly I think because he was cold.

Any thoughts...?

No way I wouldn’t - snow suits are for outside. Babies could overheat quickly in one of those.
What temp is the bedroom he slept in last night and what was he wearing?

PotteringAlong · 01/03/2018 15:23

No. Put a vest under his babygro. Turn the heating up in your house. Don’t let him do his night sleep in a snowsuit.

FrizzyNoodles · 01/03/2018 15:25

Have you tried baby sleeping bags?

3luckystars · 01/03/2018 15:28

Absolutely no way.
If it’s freezing you can put two baby grows on and socks too but a snowsuit would be dangerous.

If it was me and so cold that the baby was freezing then I would let them sleep with me to heat them up and take turns with the sling. 8 weeks is really tiny.

Good luck I hope the weather improves soon.

OK I thought so!! It was about 2c in the room. He was wearing a long sleeve vest, sleepsuitt and 2.5tog sleeping bag. It was just so cold I felt sorry for him alone in his mones basket. And he woke hourly after midnight when normally it's once or twice.

Our Windows are terrible so no chance of making room warmer!

Thanks I really wouldn't want to do anything with him. He just slept so well in it today!! (Twice!)

Sleep downstairs then. I’ve had to do it before. Stay on the couch and bring the crib down beside you. You could use a cellular blanket on top of the grow bag. Good luck!

loveulotslikejellytots · 01/03/2018 15:31

That's definitely a bit chilly! Could you put socks, under or over his sleepsuit. Or even another sleepsuit? Add a couple of cellular blankets too, just make sure they are tucked in and not loose.

FrizzyNoodles · 01/03/2018 15:33

I just noticed the room is 2degrees. Can you sleep in a different room? There is a sort of film you can put over the windows that you set with a hair dryer. I've never tried it but might be worth a go. If your living room is warmer maybe move your mattress in and co sleep

LoveB · 01/03/2018 15:35

2 degrees?! That is so cold you poor thing!

Blueberrycheesecake1 · 01/03/2018 15:35

Thanks will add socks and a blanket. Is a baby grow the same as a sleepsuit?

OP posts:
Blueberrycheesecake1 · 01/03/2018 15:37

That's what the baby thermostat said. I was cold using his hot water bottle which I put in his basket when I feed him!

3luckystars · 01/03/2018 15:39

Yes you can use two sleepsuits or babygrows.
Next have fleecy ones that have a zip and cover the hands. They are great too.
Sorry you are so cold.
My friend is convinced that her first child was a bad sleeper because he was so cold and she was terrified of overheating him.

Blueberrycheesecake1 · 01/03/2018 15:42

Thanks all. Very tired and dreading tonight!

Long sleeved baby vest, sleepsuit/baby grow (same thing) with socks over the top and scratch mits over the hands if not already built into the sleepsuit. 2.5 tog sleeping bag and if very cold cellular blanket over the top. You can also warm baby’s mattress before putting him down by laying a hot water bottle on if for a few minutes so it’s not cold when baby goes down to sleep.

randomquestions · 01/03/2018 15:49

I really don't believe your room is 2 degrees. Even in the dead of winter and with no heating on, our house would be around 13 or 14 degrees and that feels pretty cold. But getting back to the question, no don't let your baby sleep in a snow suit, they could overheat.

Youvegotafriendinme · 01/03/2018 15:49

The gro company do a liner (very much like a baby gro) you can put them in before you put them in the grow bag so baby will be extra toasty

2 degrees? Are you certain? That's almost as cold as outside?

I think you'd all be very ill if you were sleeping in a room that cold?

Sanderz · 01/03/2018 15:53

Gosh, 2 degrees, really? I urge you not to take my comment as approval but I think at 2 degrees I seriously would consider the snow suit. That's colder than outside most of the time anyway! Being too cold is a SIDS risk too...

Saying that I don't see how it can be 2 degrees. Do you not have walls??

Shadow1986 · 01/03/2018 15:56

That does seem very cold for inside - is the baby thermometer working? Have you got thick curtains, maybe you could try putting towels up to block the windows. Even in a cold, cold house I’d expect the temp to be over 10c!

Scrowy · 01/03/2018 16:01

2 degrees Celsius would be surprising. I live in a large, old, draughty and poorly heated farmhouse and I think the coldest we've ever reached at night in the bedroom is around 10 degrees.

Ok so the snowsuit is a no go, but you need a long sleeved vest or even a tshirt, plus socks underneath a babygrow, and high tog sleeping bag and a cellular blanket over the top. I have a winter born baby and that's what we had to do otherwise she would cry with the cold.

hereyougosuckmyassforensics · 01/03/2018 16:26

Why is your house so cold? Our radiator doesn't work and the gro egg was on 20c for a long time, it's on 17 now even with all the snow outside.

coffeeforone · 01/03/2018 16:52

2 degrees?? That is extremely cold, are you sure? I sleep with window open and even in this weather the room only drops to about 12 minimum. DS’s room never has heating on and it’s usually 17 (with his window closed)

If 2 degrees I would be tempted to say yes re the snowsuit. And i was paranoid about overheating but that is extreme. It might be better to co-sleep.

italiancortado · 01/03/2018 16:57

2 degrees Shock close the window!

Bojangles33 · 01/03/2018 16:58

TWO degrees?! That seems crazy, do you have another thermometer to check because that is like sleeping outside!

I haven't got children so I can not say it's safe to sleep in the snowsuit but if it really IS that cold I would think a 2.5 you sleeping bag is nowhere near enough!
