Is it 'normal' for a 9 month old to still wake frequently through the night?

I think all babies are different and babies sleep longer when they are ready. My husband says all his friends' babies sleep/slept through at 9 months and our baby is not normal.
I'd love to hear from any other 9 month+ frequent wakers out there that we're not alone?!

At nine months we were trying sleep training because dd was waking up every 40 mins. Through the night. Every. 40. Minutes.

This. Fucking horrible time.

She's now 11 months and we get 1 or 2 wake ups usually.

IWantACheeseburger · 25/08/2017 09:20

Totally normal. My eldest slept through age 2.3 and my now 15 month old wakes up at least 3/4 times a night.
Tell your husband to stop listening to his friends and concentrate on getting as much sleep as you can between you. This too shall pass!

Sallywiththegoodhurrr · 25/08/2017 09:29

My 20 month old wakes at least once a night

Timetogrowup2016 · 25/08/2017 10:29

*Also his friends are liars..

More likely they sleep through the baby waking mwahahahahah*

How ridiculous to assume this.
Dd has slept through most nights since 6 months old and is 18 months now and no I am not lying

I agree with time, but also with you OP.

Ds1 slept 7-7 from 5 months and from that moment on would only wake if very unwell. Not even teething disturbed him.

Ds2 is 3 months and is a different beast altogether. It's early days still obviously, but I suspect he will be sleeping through a lot, lot later than his brother.

That being said, at 9 months I would be on the floor a sobbing mess if I was still getting up very many times a night, so personally I would try some gentle sleep training, if you haven't already. Each to their own though! Smile

jeezlouise85 · 25/08/2017 13:06

DS is 10 months and still wakes at least every two hours despite a solid routine and sleep training methods.

beela · 25/08/2017 13:09

Normal.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2017 13:13

DD woke several times in the night until she was well over 3 years old.

Aliveinwanderland · 25/08/2017 13:15

10 month old, wakes frequently. Last night was- bed at 7pm, wake at 12 for a feed, wake at 3:30am for a feed, wake at 4:30 with teeth. Stayed awake until 8:30.

Twickerhun · 25/08/2017 13:21

DS is nearly 9months. My DH also reckons he is broken because he doesn't sleeep through. His dc (my dsc) slept through from 3 months Confused apparently.
My DS wakes twice or 3 times a night now. We had a god aweful phase when he woke every 30 mins - 1 hour which was teething/illness etc.

TinyTear · 25/08/2017 13:24

My husband says all his friends' babies sleep/slept through at 9 months and our baby is not normal.

Your husband's friends are either

  • lying
  • have sleepers
  • sleep in the spare room
  • have really deep sleep so when the mothers wake up and go to the children they don't notice...
TinyTear · 25/08/2017 13:25

My 2.5yo still only sleeps through about one or two nights a week. A good night is when she only wakes up once...

But my 5yo was the same and now could sleep through a storm...

It will happen...

MargaretCabbage · 25/08/2017 13:26

My 11 month old DD wakes up a lot in the night. My DS first slept through at 18 months.

FATEdestiny · 25/08/2017 13:48

You have a very low opinion of the fathers you mention there TinyTear. Can you think of no positive (or even neutral) reasons at all that other Dads would say this?

My husband says all his friends' babies sleep/slept through at 9 months

I would not say your DH friends are lying, a good percentage of babies would be sleeping through by 9 months.

But I would question what your DH's sample size is? One, two, five maybe? Still not many.

And has he specifically asked these other dads, or is he just assuming? Parental guilt plays horrible tricks on the minds of both sexes - mothers and fathers - leading to self-doubt and unhelpful comparison to a mythical perfect child/parent.

TinyTear · 25/08/2017 13:51

@FATEdestiny my second point was indeed "have sleepers" so I am not denying they exist...

But to say "all" of them say it, seems a bit farfetched

glow1984 · 25/08/2017 15:55

DS was sleeping for between 6-8 hours in one go from 4 months, roughly. It went to pot around 8 months but he’s now back on track unless he’s ill or teething. He’s just over a year old now and sleeps usually between 10-12 hours at night.

MyBreadIsEggy · 25/08/2017 15:56

My 10 month old wakes at least 3 times a night.
2 year old wakes at least once a night.

Oly5 · 25/08/2017 15:57

None of my three slept til they were 2. And they still wake fairly frequently!

motherinferior · 25/08/2017 16:01

My oldest slept through the night at four months. Her sister woke up once or twice in the night for longer.

Like FATEDestiny I'd be looking into doing something about a nine month old who woke as often as yours.

My DT are 15 mo and still don't sleep through - in fact one seems to have regressed to several times a night. I'm going to do some CC tonight as cants bear going back to the tiredness of the early days

oldlaundbooth · 25/08/2017 18:24

DD is eight months and wakes once or twice per night. If it's once she gets up early, I. E. 5 am. She usually goes straight back to sleep after reading a feed though.

DS slept through from 7am till 7pm at six months.

Waking in the night is brutal.

oldlaundbooth · 25/08/2017 18:27

Also, what do you count as sleeping through? 8 hours? 10?

DD sleeps for a good 8 hour chunk, but that still means she wakes at 3am having gone to bed at 7am.

I refuse to go to bed at 7pm! most nights anyway

oldlaundbooth · 25/08/2017 18:27

Having gone to bed at 7pm, sorry

Issummeroveryet · 25/08/2017 18:51

DD2 is 2 next month and has slept through a hand full of times. She has stayed in her own bed the last 3 nights which is progress! Wink
