What age did you put your toddler into a proper bed?

Just curious, as every other parent I know with children younger than my 22 month old seem to be moving them into a proper bed and I keep getting asked if she's in a 'big girl bed' yet but she isn't ready yet (or rather I'm not) so she's still in her cot.

DD went into a proper bed at around 18/19 months. She didn't like sleeping in her cot so we moved her into a bed, which did end up being a better option for her.

Once they could climb out of their cots they went into a full size bed. I didn't even use bed guards I just stuck pillows on the floor.

Snossidge · 20/10/2015 19:34

About 18 months for all of them.

Minikievs · 20/10/2015 19:35

DS was almost 3. DD is 23 mths and I have no intention of doing it any time soon. She's sleeps 12 hours in it, doesn't climb out, so if it ain't broke....Exactly the same for him. And he never really got out of bed of messed about. Maybe because he was a little bit older when hd went into a proper bed, who knows

Kraggle · 20/10/2015 19:35

Dd is 2.7. The side came off her cot about 2 months ago and when she got used to that we moved her into her toddler bed probably about a month ago.

She never tried to climb out of her cot and the only reason we moved to a bed was she started getting frustrated that she couldn't get out. Although now she's in a bed she doesn't get out until we come in to her!

daisydalrymple · 20/10/2015 19:35

18 months or so with ds1 and dd. Basically when we felt they were able to get in and out properly, were steady on their feet, and it started seeming like a safer option than the cot.

No idea what will happen with ds2, soon to turn 1. He mainly sleeps with me once I go to bed, so I have no idea when or how we'll make the transition!!!

Redberrypie · 20/10/2015 19:43

2.7 he hadn't once tried to climb out of his cot, so no need to do it any earlier.

MidnightRed · 20/10/2015 19:46

Just after second birthday for DC1. DC2 was quite happy in a cot until nearly 3.

PicnicPie · 20/10/2015 19:55

At 2.5 straight into proper bed with cushions on floor. We still haven't got rid of her cot so occasionally she does ask to sleep in there at nap time!

bigkidsdidit · 20/10/2015 19:56

Both at just over 2.

SycamoreMum · 20/10/2015 19:56

I put my DD into a toddler bed just this August gone so she was 16 months. Even though shes a prem and petite she rolled about that cot whacking her arms and legs, then she learnt to climb out of it and that was it! Bought her a lovely bed thats about a foot off the ground and wide enough for her to roll around in and she hasn't fallen off...yet.

captainproton · 20/10/2015 20:02

I wouldn't bother unless they are really unhappy with the cot or can climb out. My eldest decided at 18 months she preferred to sleep on the spare bed, my youngest climbed over the top of his cot at 14 months, fell and bust his lip. It was a nightmare to get him to stay in his bed but it was not safe to use the cot from then on.

weeblueberry · 21/10/2015 03:59

My toddler is 2.5 but is still quite happy in her cot. I'm not planning on moving her out if it until she's trying to get out or is frustrated with it.

Rebecca2014 · 21/10/2015 04:07

2.4. When she kept climbing out her cot

GreenSand · 21/10/2015 04:42

DS1 just after his second Birthday, when he climbed out.
DS2 at 19 months, when he climbed out.

Both went into toddler beds.
DS1 went into a mid sleeper at about 5.
Ds1 and DS2 went into 3/4 doubles at 6.5 and 4.5 as we !over to a furnished house, and that's what we've been given.

slightlyconfused85 · 21/10/2015 10:55

2.4. And that's only because I needed the cot for a baby due 4 months later and wanted her to have forgotten all about it. No way would I have done it under 2 she would have been a royal pain in the bum! No rush unless you need the cot

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/10/2015 11:04

About 20 months for the first one and it will be about the same when the second one goes in. Any older than that and they are climbing out surely?

LettuceLaughton · 21/10/2015 11:06

We tried DD at just under 18 months but no dice, I'm short and was heavily pregnant so it would have been good to have had her moved. She was just over 2 when we moved her in the end. DS started climbing out around his second birthday so that was that for him.

People are often very keen to move DC (especially first DC, IME) to the big bed, next size car seat, whatever as if it were a matter of superior development when it's done early. It's not. Whatever works for your family is fine.

slightlyconfused85 · 21/10/2015 11:18

My dd never climbed out - never occurred to her I'm sure she could have!

Artandco · 21/10/2015 13:03

Mine slept in a cot bed without a side from birth. Well mainly on our bed co sleeping but if they slept on mattress that's where they went. It's virtually on the floor anyway so they can't really hurt themselves falling out of they did. We found it easier they could get in and out themselves from crawling rather than lifting and them crying as trapped. Especially ds1 as I was pregnant when he was crawling so far easier he didn't have to be lifted.

TerrifiedMothertobe · 23/10/2015 22:19

Ds1 was 22 mo, as we needed him out of cot. Ds2 I will keep in his cot for as long as possible, he's 22 mo now and I can't see any need to move him for at least 4/5 months!

Passmethecrisps · 23/10/2015 22:23

Nearly 3 (in 3 weeks time) and still in her cot. We lower the side so she climbs in and out when we are here but it doesn't seem to have occurred to her to climb out on her own.

It is a cot bed though so longer than a standard cot

Writerwannabe83 · 23/10/2015 22:24

I don't understand how toddlers are managed overnight when they're in beds at such a young age.

When my DS (19m) is in his nursery he's opening his drawers, trying to crawl into his wardrobe, rummaging through his toys and books etc - there's absolutely no way I could relax at night knowing he was alone in his nursery overnight and not penned in by cot bars Shock

How do you stop them walking out their nursery in the middle of the night? Do you have stair gates across the doors?

Artandco · 23/10/2015 22:26

Writer - we have just one bedroom so they have always shared ours. We just close our door at night.
