Ds has used a sleeping bag since he was about 6 months old and they are brilliant - they also stop him standing up in the cot now he is 12 months and getting mobile. Last winter before we discovered sleeping bags, we used a fleecy sleep suit from Mothercare which was about £12 and made him look like a teddybear - i wanted one !

We have been using a sleeping bag for several months now again because ds wriggles so much in bed that he doesn't stay under the covers. we have 2 grobag ones and they have been great. I think that you can use them from about 3 months accourding to their litereature. It doesn't however stop him standing in the cot - I don't think that anything much would do that - but at least he is always warm. I would definately reccomend one.

My ds is 23 months old and has been in a bed since just before he was one (he climbs a lot). He's got a quilt from Ikea and a pillow but throws the pillow out. Good idea about putting it under the bottom sheet though - wouldn't have thought of that. In this weather though he has extra blankets on top which he always wriggles out of anyway. Even as a baby he refused to be swaddled in the hospital and just wriggled until all the covers came undone and nine times out of ten I'll go upstairs and he won't have any covers on him. Didn't dare buy him a sleeping bag thing as he would probably have screamed the house down. He's a bit of a houdini so that probably is why.

I also recommend a sleeping bag they are fab.
I bought my last one via a stcokist recommended by a mumsnet member. Have a look via the search engine of the threads to see what else has been said on this subject.
I think the site I bought it from was
www.thebabycatalogue.com

I have just bought a Grobag sleeping bag for ds. He is a real fidget in bed and pushes his way upwards out of his covers. It has helped him sleep longer, although he is still waking up, instead of around 2am he seems to be sleeping until dh's alarm goes off around 4am and he is then in with me (removing the sleeping bag first of course). It has made a difference to his ezcma too Im sure, as he now is not getting too hot. Grobag were very quick and I received my sleeping bag the next day.

Ljay · 10/11/2001 14:10

I would recommend using sleeping bags to anyone who has young children. Even for daytime naps a sheet sleeping bag ensures that they don't get their legs caught in the bars of the cot. I think people are generally under the impression that the sleeping bags are going to be very padded and too hot - but you can get thinner material ones as well. We have used Grobag (excellent for fast delivery) and Kiddycare bags.

I'm currently looking for a sleeping bag for ds. As the Grobag ones seem popular, could you please let me know where I could get one? Thanks in advance.

excellent! thanks very much.

Janus · 12/11/2001 11:21

Does anyone know if you can buy baby quilt covers? My daughter uses a quilt and I bung it in the wash every now and then but it would be easier to just wash a cover a bit more regularly!!
Thanks.

Another vote for Kiddycare bags from Scotland. Winter and Summer I'm now on my 6th order from them!

Ems · 12/11/2001 13:07

Janus, my son has a little duvet from mothercare that has a Winnie the pooh duvet cover from there. Not sure if there were others.

Sis · 13/11/2001 10:59

Janus, John Lewis also sell duvet covers but they tend to be a bit boring (tasteful?).

Harrysmum · 14/11/2001 15:29

First night with the new sleeping bag last night (Grobag - excellent delivery as mentioned previously; new range seems a bit more funky - fewer pastels). Ds seemed to like it although had a bit of a problem rolling over and getting twisted - he is a very active sleeper and roams all over his cot - hence the need for a sleeping bag in the first place - no more 4am wake up calls for blankets hopefully. Any advice?

Janus · 14/11/2001 19:32

Sis, bought a cover from John Lewis on the net. They only do white but you can brighten it up with a top blanket so actually I think this is probably the best for me. Think John Lewis going on the net is a miracle!!! This is my first order and if everything goes well shall be ordering again. Only £2.95 delivery - I can't even get in to town by tube for that so well worth it.

Sis · 15/11/2001 16:20

Oh Janus, if you know what you want and are within a John Lewis store's free delivery area, you can phone up the shop and give them your switch/credit card details over the phone and ask them to pop it in their delivery service. They're brilliant for people like me who are working full time and hate shopping in the real shops (I like shopping on the net though).

Janus · 15/11/2001 19:52

Sis, do you know how many mile radius you have to live in? Actually, the next time I see something I'll give them a ring and ask - I never knew they did this, can this store get any better!!!
Ta for the tip.

An additional point which I am having problems with at the moment. My 18 month daughter has been in a sleeping bag since 3 months and has slept well. However, recently she has taken to unzipping it and then waking up crying in the night with cold. Any tips? I have cunningly sewn a button on the top so she can't fully undo it, but she still managed to open it up! I am reluctant to keep the heating on all night as suggested by one person.

Sis · 19/11/2001 12:38

Janus, I replied on Friday but the machine seems to have eaten it up so sorry about the delay. Also, sorry, but I don't know the radius for free delivery from John Lewis.

Anyway, I wish you happy shopping in the best dept store ever!(no, I don't work there, but I did have a Saturday job there in my teens).

Fidge · 19/11/2001 20:43

Frankie, we had this problem and in the end had to ditch the bag, which she had nearly grown out of anyway, and go for a cot duvet. I didn't think of the button idea tho, hope it works.

On the duvet cover question, I made mine. I objected to paying £30 for a whinnie the pooh one from mothercare, especially as dd was nearly 2 and I thought she might be out of the cot soon. My caution was well founded, see the 'Help my nearly-2 year old can climb out of the cot' thread!!

I actually prefer plain colours (sorry) so bought a plain white flanellete double sheet from one of those discount homeshops for about £8. It took me about an hour altogether (obviously not in one stint with a 2 yaer old around!) to make two duvet covers.

Frankie · 11/02/2002 10:03

Just a quick update in case anyone is interested in the keeping a toddler in a sleeping bag problem. Yes - the button worked! Although she now ends up in a type of cape held secure by the button. I then sneak in and zip it up when I go to bed and this seems to have ended the problems with her waking up cold in the night. As we have another baby on the verge of being born, it now won't be long until the switch to bed and duvet and a whole new set of potential problems! Is it ever straight forward?!
