I'm always amazed at the difference in attitudes and practices among different countries.

For example, here in Denmark, we only use duvets - the is no such thing as sheets and blankets for babies. One of the first things taught in the maternity ward is how to wrap your baby in its duvet.

I'm English and was appalled when I found out, but it seems to work with no measurable difference to cot death rates etc.

I believe the recommended age for duvets/pillows is over 12 months. We used a thin quilted duvet at this age and a thicker duvet and pillow now ds is in a bed. However, he never sleeps on the pillow and always kicks the duvet off; he never did like covers, even when a baby! We did try a grobag but ds already knew he could stand up so objected to this new 'containment' so we couldn't use it (he's a bit of a wriggler in bed). Would use a grobag for another child tho, but from a young age, before he/she realised what it was for!!

DS is 19 months and still in a cot - not yet ready to move to a bed. He sleeps with a sheet and cellular blanket and 2/3 times a week will wake us up 1-4 times in the night because he has kicked off the covers. Obviously this is only going to get worse when the colder weather comes. I was wondering if he'd be better with a duvet (prefer removable covers than a quilt) and a pillow. He has slept with a pillow under one end of the mattress for months due to recurrent colds etc so much so that although the colds seem to have eased he bangs his head on the top of the cot if I remove it.

I would like to get him something that would be OK in the cot (ordinary cot not cot bed) but that would be OK in a full size single bed when he eventually makes the transition and so be familiar. I wondered about a cot bed size duvet. Also baby pillows seem rather small - can't see his head staying on one. Any ideas anyone?

My ds is 23 months, he sleeps in a cot bed with a small pillow and has for about 5 months. And in the winter (last winter) he had a duvet and in the summer he has blankets, either way he manages to sleep on top of them and I hunt around in the dark trying to find something else to put over him!

forgot to mention he still has the bars up the sides as he moves around so much of a night time, hes not ready for the bed step quite yet.

Alley does his head stay on the pillow?

Alley22 · 19/09/2002 14:51

he seems to carry the pillow with him, sometimes I put him to bed all nice and tucked in and when i go to check on him again he has carried his pillow to the other end of the cot on top of his covers! strange child I have a spare blanket by his bed constantly!

My dd was given a petit bateau sleeping bag when she was 3 months old and she's still using it - now 11 months. It's fantastic, lightweight and warm enough for both seasons and it's poppers all the way up so no zip probblems. If it's a bit warmer in the evening I leave some of the bottm poppers undone so she gets a bit of air inside the bag. However we now need to buy the next size up and they're a bit pricey (circa £40-£50) but I think worth every penny.
