Weaning off dummy - how?!

PLEASE help, I'm desperate.

14 week old who SCREAMS relentlessly at full volume if she doesn't have the dummy in her mouth when she falls asleep & wakes up.

One episode saw her awake for 96 hrs without even a nap Sad partly down to severe reflux which isn't helping.

TeamEponine · 05/03/2015 17:37

Fantastic news! Do you know what you did differently to help?

18yearsoftrying · 05/03/2015 21:05

I stopped the Ranitidine, as I thought as it wasn't working there was no point in giving, I've been giving 150ml feeds roughly every 3 hours and when she was flexible, used the bouncey chair. I also bought a Sleepyhead to try & make her feel secure when horizontal (as horizontal as she can tolerate, that is).

I'm in total shock that she slept in daylight. She screams as though het world has ended when her dummy falls out or she wakes up to learn it's not in her mouth but I'm willing to cope with that at the mo Wink

Just a big big thankyou to each & every one if you that took the time to read & post Flowers

What a lovely post to read OP. I am so pleased that things keep getting better and better for you and your daughter.

These babies are damn hard work Flowers

When my DC had reflux, I was told a dummy can help relieve symptoms as well as give comfort. It won't cure the reflux but sucking apparently helped a bit.

We had to sit up after feeds for a long time, it's a hard time. You have my sympathy.

The less babies sleep the less they seem to be able to sleep. So do anything for your baby to get back into the routine of sleep. Please don't worry about a dummy at 14 weeks. My local area say try to lose it by a year tops, but even then some people don't stop until later. But at least get to 6 months when they start to mature in a few other ways, perhaps start to drop night feeds etc. it will be ok, honestly.

Op here.Smile
No naps in day but the last 2 nights DD has slept 7.30pm-ish to 6/7am with a dreamfeed before I crash out. Bedtime starts at 5 but I don't mind.

I hope I haven't jinxed it now by talking about it.

Tonights issue is DH getting up at 2.30am for workShock

Another thankyou to you for the support and super-kind words when I was at my lowest.

How old is she now OP? Is she rewarding you with any smiles yet?

18yearsoftrying · 09/03/2015 11:49

She's 16weeks and I am so in love with her, she's addictive. The smiles and especially the giggles when she sees me first thing in the morning just melt my heart, it's ridiculous. It's as though overnight she just changed from being so poorly that she wouldn't bend to sit or get comfy laying flat to the complete opposite since following the lovely posters from MN.

Her food is staying down (mostly!) & she's now happy to roll & try to do tummy time of her own accord. This time last week I really was so low.

brilliant. sounds like you can get on with the business of being mummy now. it's just awful when they are miserable like that. enjoy!

SunflowerSmile · 09/03/2015 12:20

So happy to read your update.

Please be kind to yourself during this time. It takes a bit of time to figure all this out and lack of sleep is beyond exhausting.

I took the dummy from my first at 2 months -DD then started sucking thumb and did so until 3 years. Second DC - happily let have dummy as a result.

Good job to you for getting through the tough times.
