Gro-bags...yay or nay?

DetentionGrrrl · 27/09/2006 10:26

My 14 wk old is wriggling out of his blankets at night- i suspect it's why he wakes up half the time. H visitor gave me info saying they shouldn't be used- any truth in that? Any pros or cons people have found using them?

Both mine have been in grobags.

They're brilliant, IMO.

Glassofwine · 27/09/2006 10:27

I used them with all of mine with great sucess as long as you make sure at this early stage to get the right size. Having said that my youngest is three and maybe there has been some research since.

Iklboo · 27/09/2006 10:29

Very much a yay from me. DS only sleeps well when he's in one. Don't know why your HV says not to use them unless she's worried about baby overheating - they're fine as long as LO is over 7lbs and you don't pile on the blankets as well. You can get different tog sizes too

DelGirl · 27/09/2006 10:29

definitely. My dd is a wriggler. I have just stopped using them though as I think she would hurt herself more as she's 17 mths now and likes to stand in her cot so i'm looking out for a quilt. The best ones I found were in Asda for £10 which wash well but don't tumble dry them.

bundle · 27/09/2006 10:32

what info did the hv give to you? where was it from and what did it say?

mosschops30 · 27/09/2006 10:39

get one, ds loves his, is still in it now at 20 months am buying another one next wk to take him up to 36 months, so much easier and he loves snuggling into it every night

foxinsocks · 27/09/2006 10:42

I would try one out first if you can (if you have a friend with one maybe) - both mine were terrible wrigglers and I think they felt the grobag was like a straitjacket. They both absolutely hated it!

But we are in the minority on this normally - however, if you are tight for money, I would really try one out first before you buy one just in case!

princessmel · 27/09/2006 10:53

My son loved his and was in it till he was just over 3. He had the 6-12m one then the 18m- 36m one made by 'gro bag'company.

My dd only went in one for first time last night. She has been waking even more than usual and I think she's getting cold so I want her to go in one. She is used to being wrapped up in a large sheet ( gentle swaddling I suppose)but as she moves lots now, she is 13 months, the sheet is coming off. I hope she takes to it. It shouldn't be to diff for her as she likes being contained iykwim.

buffythenappyslayer · 27/09/2006 10:56

i got one for dd as she kept kicking covers off and would wake up because of being cold.she hated the gro bag though!mind you she hates anything on her legs and feet!

hulababy · 27/09/2006 10:59

I used Grobags with DD from 10 weeks and they were fantastic,

Someone else once posted that a HV said they shouldn't be used. Can't remember reasons now. However most of the other stuff I have ever read has always had them in a good and posiitve light.

So long as yuo use the correct size for the age of your baby, I believe they are very safe.

throckenholt · 27/09/2006 11:07

yay for mine - they really suited us - and am sorry my twins are now just about to grow out of the biggest size.

Think there maybe some reason for not using when tiny - but can't remember it now - it seems so long ago !

DetentionGrrrl · 27/09/2006 15:09

I think i'll give them a go then- maybe get one and see how it goes. The HV advice was on a leaflet about placing your baby correctly in his cot etc. Don't think it gave a reason why not to use them. Cheers guys.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 27/09/2006 15:10

they are fab if thebaby tolerates them! Ive not heard of them being unsafe.

Jess loved hers, was in it until 16 months.

Rebecca on the other hand will not tolerate one at all!

IdrisTheDragon · 27/09/2006 15:11

DS loved his .

DD did not .

hermykne · 27/09/2006 15:18

oh a brilliant invwention altogether. and getting them into it and use to it at 14wks shouldnt be difficult

twickersmum · 27/09/2006 15:54

they are absolutely fantastic, i have used mine with both daughters. one thing though try and get one which zips up the side as the front fastening ones can be tricky to do up if they are wriggling and don't want to get in!

do keep an eye on the temperature in the room - at the moment the temperature in my dd's room is 22 degs, so she is in a 1 tog grobag with just a long sleeved vest. that really is enough! if they are wearing too much and get too hot they will probably hate the grobags.

Babounette · 27/09/2006 16:24

Absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't hve done without them for both ds.
I have heard you shouldn't use them as well as blanket but never that grobag shouldn't be used at all.
Where this info is coming from?

doggiesayswoof · 27/09/2006 16:30

DD has always used one (since she was 7lb that is!) - she's now into the 18-36 month size. The 1 tog ones are great for warmer houses.

tissy · 27/09/2006 16:34

best thing since sliced bread

Seona1973 · 27/09/2006 20:10

This is official advice from the SIDS website:

Can my baby use a sleeping bag/sack?

If you wish to use a sleeping bag for your baby make sure it's designed for regular use at night (ie not one designed for camping) and without a hood. It must be the right size to prevent your baby from sliding down into the bag. To make sure your baby doesn't become too hot choose a lightweight bag. What the baby needs will vary greatly according to the temperature of the room. Never use a sleeping bag with a duvet or quilt. If it?s very warm, your baby may need only a vest and a nappy, with light bedding such as a sheet, or perhaps no bedding at all. If your baby looks hot and sweaty it usually means they?ve got too much bedding.

The gro-bag group that makes the 'proper' grobags actually works with the FSID and is the FSID's official partner. More info here

I used a grobag with dd from around 10-18 months and have bought smaller ones for use with my soon to be born ds (due in less than 2 weeks - aggghh)

ghosty · 27/09/2006 20:12

Yay - DD still in hers, she is 2 and a half.

beansprout · 27/09/2006 20:13

Marvellous, marvellous things. Ds is nearly 2 and is still using them.

FrayedKnot · 27/09/2006 20:13

Yay.

I bought DS the tiniest size when he was about 4 weeks old and wouldn;t stay under a blanket for more than 5 minutes.

Used (obviously in increasingly larger sizes ) until he went into a bed at 2.4.

One of the best inventions in the world IMO.

biglips · 27/09/2006 20:16

yay.... and my DD is nearly 2...its a saver for me

m1m1rie · 27/09/2006 20:47

Definitely yay. Although when DD worked it out she would often pull the poppers open and wriggle out (she is a very determined little sod). But the nights when she didn't get it off were peaceful and sleepy because she never got too cold coccooned in her little snuggle bag, and getting cold in the middle of the night must surely be number 1 cause of restlessness
