Gro-bags...yay or nay?

My 14 wk old is wriggling out of his blankets at night- i suspect it's why he wakes up half the time. H visitor gave me info saying they shouldn't be used- any truth in that? Any pros or cons people have found using them?

my dd hates her gro-bag, but then me, my sisters, my mother and grandmother all hate(d) having our feet covered when we sleep so i suppose it's fair enough. i only found this out last week, when my family were round for dinner and i was complaining about wasting money on dd's gro-bag, so i've not made it up...
who would have thought that not liking your feet being covered would be coded onto our DNA somewhere?

Peridot30 · 27/09/2006 21:26

never had 1 for ds but got one as a pressie for dd and was brilliant-definately best baby invention. Would definately recommend it!

Bellie · 27/09/2006 21:33

dd has used one since she was about 4 months old and she used to wriggle so much that I would find her underneath her blanket/sheet no matter how I tried to keep them tucked in.
Not looked back since and she is nearly 2 - best invention ever - I am about to buy her the next size up and am ever hopeful that they will make them for past 36 months!!

CountTo10 · 27/09/2006 21:36

Used them with DS up to this summer and they were fab. He's always been a wriggler and it was the only way I could keep him in covers!!! The only thing I would say is always ensure that they are age appropriate and the tog is not to high for the season i.e. 2.5 is ok through the winter but you should get a more lightweight one for the summer. Oh and always have more than one!!!!

Seona1973 · 28/09/2006 13:40

Bellie, they make them for children up to the age of 6 !! See them on the bumpto3 website.

belgo · 28/09/2006 13:45

Nay. They were ok for when my dds were small, but as soon as they could roll, they would get tangled up in them. As soon as they could stand, then the gro bag would trip them up. My oldest dd could get out of hers by the age of one. Warm babygros and cardigans are a lot better.

hana · 28/09/2006 13:47

dont' get them
use a blanket
or use fleecy pjs

and you can get them for 3 year olds ???? what's that about!

hulababy · 28/09/2006 13:50

DD would give blankets off or pull them over her. Don't like fleecy suits - too hot for our house. Grobag felt much safer - at least no risk of having it over her face.

MegaLegs · 28/09/2006 13:52

All 4 of mine used (DS4 stil in his) them and they were/are great IMO. Our house is quite cold but they all slept snug in them. DS1 didn't sleep really well until he went into his.

Spatz · 28/09/2006 13:52

I don't think that sleeping bag quote means a babygro - they can't slip down because they button over the shoulders.
My DD loved hers and could walk in it safely. DS is 3.5 and still in his (right now).

Bellie · 28/09/2006 13:54

seona1973 - thanks for that!

compo · 28/09/2006 13:57

Didn't realise they could be used from 7lbs, thought it was from 11lbs. Can anyone confirm this? tia

Sophiev73 · 28/09/2006 14:08

Love them. Best thing about them imo is the fact my ds1 got so used to them that he never tried climbing out of the cot, and even now in a bed with blankets, he won't get out of bed until I'm in the room in the morning! Hurrah! Also, the travel ones are great for transporting sleepy babes into bed from the car...

PrettyCandles · 28/09/2006 14:08

At 14w? FHS! My first went into a sleeping bag at 3m (when I first discovered them), my second at about 1m when she was physically big enough for it. They both slept better from the first night in their bag.

The 'proper' position in the cot is "feet to foot" so that they don't wriggle down under the blankets - which is impossible in a sleeping bag of the right size. So if they're in a bag you don't need to worry where you put them in the cot.

You don't really need to spend lots on different tog-rated bags, you can easily get a couple (in case of vomitting/nappy leaks etc) of summer-weight bags and vary what the baby wears, or even add a blanket over the top. I used to put a cardie on over the sleeping bag if they felt a little chilly when they were tiny.

PrettyCandles · 28/09/2006 14:11

As for the larger sizes, my two slept in sleeping bags until they moved out of their cots at age 3.5y. They just used the largest standard size, and it fitted fine, even though dd is a big girl.

AngeG · 28/09/2006 14:19

Compo Grobag changed their sizes! When my DS was born they had premature bags that could be used from 7lbs but the 0-6 months were from 11 lbs.

Now they have newborn suitable from 7lbs and 0-6 months to follow on from that

Hope that helps

wrinklytum · 28/09/2006 14:20

Have used them for both of mine.An excellent investment IMHO.Used them from 12 weeks.Would be difficult for baby to get entangled in one if its the right size.

twickersmum · 28/09/2006 15:11

www.mamatoto.co.uk have a great range of grobags and everything else for that matter. i have a free delivery code you can use!! KF1ZZ140 - enter it at the checkout.

DetentionGrrrl · 29/09/2006 07:26

Well i tried a sleeping bag last night, and it was not popular. He woke up at 10pm, where-as he usually sleeps until 12-1am, looking confused and annoyed. Took it off and put him under his usual fleecy blanket, and he slept until 3am then. Don't know if it's worth trying again when he's bigger or not.
