How heavy was your baby when he/she first slept for 8hours straight?

My DD is 4.5months old but was 2 months early and small for dates so still only weighs around 10lbs.

She sleeps well but her limit is about 6hours at night. I suspect this is size related. Books and other posts generally talk about ages which is hard to interpret in my case.

How heavy were yours when they could go for a whole night?

Thanks for the help

Both of mine were 4 years +. I don't actually know how old they were when they started sleeping long stretches because all I really cared about was when they became capable of sorting out their own needs at night and returning to sleep without help from me!

I have very seldom ever slept through the night without waking at least once either, as a child or adult.

YokoUhOh · 19/07/2014 21:24

Never - 20 months!

allisgood1 · 19/07/2014 21:25

I think it's two separate issues really. Weight does impact whether or not baby needs feeding at night but has nothing to do with not sleeping thru for other reasons. Those posters whose children didn't sleep thru until age 2, 4, etc didn't have waking children because they were hungry. The reasons there will be very varied depending on each child.

I agree it never seemed to be to do with weight for my three. I found they actually slept 8 hours or more from 3 months to around 8 months and then the whole malarkey of clingyness and teething kicks in and then it's a question of whether you battle for a routine or go with the flow till they're old enough to last the day without a nap get worn out at 2 or 2 1/2. We've ended up doing something in between depending on the baby and what's going on. I don't want to sound know it all but I'm just browsing while settling the baby and if I could go back to when #1 was tiny I wish I'd been more relaxed and flexible about them sleeping through. I find you can never say you're in a routine cos it can change any day but just make the most of the hours you get and like titabeth said months might seem eternity at the moment but you'll get your sleep one day :)

DS - 13.5kg, 3 year old (6lb 15oz at birth)

DD - currently 21lbs (not sure about KG), 16 months old ((7lb 2oz at birth) and yet to sleep more than 4 hour (if we're lucky).

MrsJohnDeere · 19/07/2014 22:19

Ds1 at around 16 weeks

Ds2 only reliably at about 4yo.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 19/07/2014 22:24

DS1 was about 7lbs, he slept through most nights pretty much from birth (not such a great sleeper now though!). Born at 38 weeks and mix/mainly FF.

DS2 was about 6lbs, he would have been about 1.5 months old (he would have slept longer earlier but he were waking him up to feed as he was small) he was 5 weeks prem and BF.

Meglet · 19/07/2014 22:34

DS - 12 weeks old. He was 12 hours by then actually Blush.

DD was 5 months old. Her sleep went silly from the age of 3 though, late evenings and some night wandering.

Both average size, haven't got red books to hand.

lauriebear · 19/07/2014 23:15

2.5 years so erm rather heavy evolutionaryparenting.com/normal-infant-sleep-part-i/

Kahlua4me · 19/07/2014 23:43

Ds was 5 years old! Even now, at nearly 11, he is still not a good sleeper and always up by about 5.30 to 6. It's fine though as he is able to entertain himself then and make us a cup of tea.

Dd slept through at 11 weeks, so she was sleeping through the night before her big brother!

306235388 · 19/07/2014 23:50

Ds was 2.6yo so I don't know how much he weighed.

Dd was about 4 weeks so I suspect about 11lb? She was a big baby.

123upthere · 20/07/2014 00:18

all babies are so different. Try not to worry so much. Read your baby, and listen to your instincts. It doesn't matter what strangers on internet did with their babies.
It's like saying you like to go to sleep at 9pm each night and waken at 6am but maybe your sister prefers to sleep at 11pm-8am.
We are all different. Babies equally so.
DS1 - slept through at 22mths
DD2- slept through aged 3.5
DD3 - slept through at 10 weeks
The main difference i can think of is that I was so much more relaxed as a parent with DD3. They do pick up on these things.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 20/07/2014 00:27

Dd slept from 11to 7 from 5 weeks and from 7 to 7 from 12 weeks. She was a tiny dot (second from bottom line of weight charts)

Op I would say as long as you dd is still putting on weight and thieving without the night feeds she is ready.

gointothewoods · 20/07/2014 00:30

Haven't read replies, but weight is irrelevant. DS was 10lb 4oz when born. He is 5.5 years old now and still rarely sleeps any more than about 6 hours straight. Sad

Handsoff7 · 20/07/2014 00:41

allisgood - completely agree. It was the need for a night feed I thought might be weight related. DD will wake for other reasons so the 6hrs is a best case scenario.

Sounds like she's big enough now (although perhaps only just). On the other hand current situation is not too bad so perhaps best not to change anything....

They all do it in the end OP, though for a lot of babies waking up in the night seems to be a habit rather than a necessity. But try not to worry too much about calculating and make sure you're OK and not too tired yourself. Have naps!

Treaclepot · 20/07/2014 09:50

My smallest one slept through (7-7though with a dream feed) slept through at 5 weeks.

The other two were 8 and 9 weeks, all bf, but all had times where they started waking again so did cc (around 10 months).

They all also had times after being poorly so where used to sleeping with us where we had to do the endless walking back to bed thing.

But ime it's more to do with setting up good habits (from day one I put them down a little bit awake, minimal rocking etc only used a tiny light to do night feeds, nevr spoke after lights out, ignoring little awakenings, not immediTely offering a boob if they wake up, no eye contact unless upset with teething etc. then in the morning lots of contact, cuddles playing etc so that they got the difference between day and night)

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 20/07/2014 11:46

Not sure of the weight, sorry, but all 3 of my DS's slept 8 hours at 8/9 months. I'd stopped bf by then too.

weebairn · 20/07/2014 12:00

Mine was exclusively breastfed and slept 9-10 hours straight from about 6 weeks.

Lasted for about 3 amazing months then all stopped!

weebairn · 20/07/2014 12:02

Oh and she was pretty small, 6 lb 14 oz at birth.

grounddown · 20/07/2014 13:50

DD was 11 weeks and DS was 16 months

FryOneFatManic · 20/07/2014 14:36

DC1 was about 10 weeks when she went 8 hours. She was 6lbs 5oz when born but put weight on fine.

DS woke up at 2am on the dot until just before his 2nd birthday, although he'd go back off to sleep very quickly. He was 8lbs 1oz when born and also put weight on fine.

Not sure it's about size or age really.

hiccupgirl · 20/07/2014 16:26

DS slept for an 8 hr stretch for the 1st time around 2 1/2. He didn't need a night feed from about 18 months but it took a long time for him to learn to sleep for long stretches of time. He could do a 4-5 hour stretch by 18 months on and off.

bewleysisters · 20/07/2014 19:08

Four years, 7 and a half months (not that we were counting or anything....).
