Baby only naps when held - any suggestions?

DS, 10 weeks today, is starting to get over his colic now, but because of the colic I have been holding him and rocking him a lot and now he won't nap anywhere except in his wilkinet if someone walks at a reasonable speed or in someone's arms - someone being either my mother or myself. My mother has extended her stay in the UK 3 times because she can see I'm not coping very well, but she'll have to go home eventually... Has anyone had this problem? any suggestions about how to get him to nap by himself, or do I have to wait until he is 6 months old to do controlled crying?

Julie ... I am a fan of swaddling ... didn't discover it until DS was 10 weeks old but it worked for him and I have swaddled DD since birth ... she is 7 weeks tomorrow and she always sleeps better and for longer when she is nicely wrapped up like a parcel ...
Just a thought ... I was talking to a lady the other day whose little baby boy wouldn't sleep lying down and she discovered at 10 weeks that he had 'Silent Reflux' ... it might be worth looking into ...

I agree, swaddling is great - very necessary when you have a touchy baby (cf Baby Whisperer terminology!) who startles a lot and wakes himself up. Also a very dark room. The white noise cd just arrived and seems quite good. AND now big breakthrough! my mother has got little DS to sleep in his basket a few times during the day. I have managed once. My mother has a more calming presence, no doubt about it (I'm a bit of an insomniac myself). Anyway the main thing is that he has been able to get to sleep by himself in his basket so maybe he'll work out that it's quite a good thing - he was getting more and more frustrated by our rocking him and walking him up and down. TOday though we missed the 'window' and he was overtired, so DH has taken him for a walk inthe wilkinet to sleep him - and it's raining, poor DH!
