I bet no-one lets their 26month old nap for 2hrs between 1-3pm!

Just that really! 26 month old DD takes 30-45mins to fall asleep in cot. Most days last week she had long nap. Still awake at 9-9.30pm. Yesterday had 10mins in car - asleep by 8! Surely it's a no brainer!! Just need to convince OH & childminder!

How long does your 26 month old nap for?

My dd is 23mo and naps 1-3pm. Bed time is 7pm and she gets up at around 6.30am.

Sounds like your child minder is rubbish. No brainer is right. If child not sleeping at night cut their nap. 26m about right for cutting back on naps. Ds had 1h at noon until nearly 3 but had to drop it as was bouncing round at 9pm then didn't want to get up in morning.

It's been really hard to go to no nap because tiredness really builds up over the week and we end up having meltdowns. The alternative is 2 hours of hollering from 730 for drinks or wees or just playing in room. Drove me nuts.

Childminder should be better at this than you. Does she not know lots of different children with different sleep patterns? Is she by chance looking after younger ones with your dd?

Why does your OH disagree? Is he sat in front of TV whilst you go up & settle her?!

New rules: nap promptly by 1230 - 1 at latest, no more than an hour, no sleeping past 2.yes that means wake her up (gently) if necessary.

Two of our 3 dc had a nap at similar times to yours OP, the other didn't nap at all and would still be awake at 7pm. I know which I preferred at the time Grin
They are all different.

DD2 is 26 months and sleeps 1-3 most days and still goes to bed at 7pm some nights there is a lot of chatting and singing before sleep by 8pm and she can be up at 6am but she really needs a sleep still. DD1 slept for an hour in the afternoon until she was 4. It depends how your DD copes when she doesn't get a sleep. DD2 can just about cope if she's busy and as a one off but not more than one day in a row.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2013 21:33

Ds3 is 30m and has a two hour nap everyday. He also sleeps from 7-7 or 7-8.

TheRobberBride · 25/11/2013 21:34

My 26 month old naps from 12.20-2.30 most days. Bedtime ia 6.45.

Shootingstar100 · 25/11/2013 21:36

ZenNudist this is the sort of reply I was expecting in the first place Wink

Yes childminder has 2 younger ones on a Monday. OH just thinks she needs her sleep & that we need to get her to bed earlier!! He's quite happy to settle her while I do other stuff.

I feel well psyched up to follow your plan though. Thanks!

Ds2 dropped his nap at 22 months Sad
If he has so much as a whiff of a sleep he's up till 10!

LittlePoot · 25/11/2013 21:39

Another sleepy one here - he's always been a napper and now at 33m he still often has a two hour nap (maybe 1.30 to 3.30) at the weekend then sleeps 8pm-7am ish at night. Although has been known to lie in his cot having a half hour sing-song before going to sleep - pretty regularly actually. Definitely depends though - his friend, same age, is up half the night if his mum lets him nap longer than about an hour. I'd say trust your instincts - keep the naps short for a week and see if it makes any useful difference. Hope it helps.

Thesimplethings · 25/11/2013 21:40

My ds1 3.6 and ds2 2.2 both nap from 12.30ish to 2.30ish. They go to bed 7.30 and sleep 7-8am

Teladi · 25/11/2013 21:41

My 27 month old sleeps from somewhere between 1hr and 2hr after her lunch. She goes to bed at 7-7.30ish and usually wakes somewhere between 6.20 and 6.40am, I go in to get her up at 7am.

A wee while ago I did cut her nap to 1hr because she was waking early or waking in the night and singing, but seems like she needs the extra sleep again now.

optimusic · 25/11/2013 21:46

My youngest used to nap between 1 and 3. Would still be asleep by 7 and wake up around 8. Loves his sleep. Used to annoy me, as most of the play groups, swim, massage and stuff was between those times.

SolomanDaisy · 25/11/2013 21:49

Mine hasn't napped for months, his choice. He went from two hours 2-4 and asleep about 10-8.30 at night to no nap and sleeping 7.30 -8 at about 21 months. Exhausting to start with, but I like the adult evenings now! I think some days he could still do with a nap, but he disagrees. He will lie on the sofa with a blanket though.

Xmasbaby11 · 25/11/2013 22:00

DD is 22 mo and naps 1 hour a day after lunch - same since she was 1. Genuinely shocked so many children still nap age 2+!

Artandco · 25/11/2013 22:10

Both toddlers still nap here in the afternoon them sleep good overnight. Most who drop naps is just sleep regression. After 1-2 weeks of less naps most tend to go back if you continue

The NHS recommends:

12 months
daytime: 2.5 hours
night time: 11.5 hours

2 years
daytime: 1.25 hours
night time: 11.75 hours

3 years
daytime: 1 hour
night time: 11 hours

So I'm assuming the NHS is basing this on the average that most 2 and 3 year olds do still nap

reddaisy · 25/11/2013 22:25

ArtandCo - I am going to forward the NHS guidelines onto DS, 24 months, as I am pretty sure he must have missed their last few memos Grin

Shootingstar100 · 25/11/2013 22:35

Oh gosh DD not paying any attention to NHS guidelines!!!

Haha - mine does exactly that. And out like a light by 7. Sorry! He's a dervish the whole time he's awake tho.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/11/2013 22:43

3 hours in the afternoon and 7 or 8pm until between 7 and 9am. If he doesn't have his nap he becomes horrible and grumpy, overtired and wont sleep!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 25/11/2013 22:44

Like Charity, mines is a bit mental when he is awake though, obviously using up all of his energy.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 25/11/2013 22:46

I would be ready to bludgeon both your Childminder & OH to a pulp!!

Toddlers daytime sleep needs tailoring depending on how it affects their nightime sleep. If they aren't sleeping well (& quickly) at night you need to move the nap earlier, then start cutting back on it (by waking them) until they are going to bed and going pretty much straight to sleep - then sleeping for 11/12 hrs.

Most of the children (that age) I know (and I know a fair few!) are napping for 1-1.5 hrs between 12.30 & 2.30
