How can I get my baby to nap without the hairstyle on?

My baby girl who is 3 months old has never napped in the day without the hair dryer on!

She sleeps from 6.30pm until 6am every night which is lovely but she gets so grizzly by the end of the day if she hasn't had much of a nap. She'll happily have a cat nap on me for about 20 mins every now again but that's it. The only way I can get her to have a proper nap in her bed for an hour is to put the hair dryer on and leave it on! It can get the room rather warm sometimes so I ensure that she is in minimal clothing so she does not over heat.

When it comes to bed time she goes gown do easily (with no hair dryer) all I do is press Ewan her dream sheep which makes comforting noises and ages asleep! However Ewan the sheep doesn't seem to work for her at nap times.

Shall I just accept that this is how she is or should I try another tactic before I can no longer afford my electric bill?!

could you record the sound and play it at nap time?

Shock at you keeping the hairdryer on for an hr!!

Sossiges · 04/08/2012 14:00

You can probably buy a cd of white noise or even hairdryer noise, have a look on Amazon or ebay. Your poor hairdryer!

Sossiges · 04/08/2012 14:01

Did have to look to see what this hairstyle was that was essential to sleep, and how you kept it on the baby's head Blush

Figgygal · 04/08/2012 14:03

My DS was like this needed the white noise to get him to sleep but after he was asleep could switch it off and we had a cool setting on ours do it didn't blow hot air.

Recording it might be a good idea.

He's 7 mo now and naps quite happily with his musical seahorse on I'm sure it'll pass!!

Apparently there's loads of stuff like this and this about.

I clicked on the thread to see what the 'hairstyle' was....it sounded intriguing.

TheWonderfulFanny · 04/08/2012 14:05

Tune an fm or longwave radio between stations for free white noise, as loud as you like, fraction of the cost of running a hairdryer and without the fire risk

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 14:06

Haha you should have seen it, it would have won awards! Wink

That's a good idea about recording the hair dryer, it will just need to be very loud! I've tried hoovering around her and putting her in front of the washing machine and it just doesn't have the same effect!

I just think its funny that she doesn't need it at bedtime just at nap time....

Op can I ask, does she have a dream feed between 6.30pm and 6am or literally sleep straight through? My DD is also three months and sleeps from about 8-6, but I've been waking her for a dream feed as I've been concerned she'd wake at 3 instead!!

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 14:13

Googietheegg No she doesn't have a dream feed, she has gone straight through for the last 6 weeks. Sometimes she will stir (not wake) I just get up and press her sheep again and she's settled until the morning.

You don't leave the hairdryer on in her room when she's napping do you? Confused

Apart from knackering your hairdryer (which it will, eventually) this is also a fire risk.

Record it and play it to get her to sleep - you could very gradually lower the volume on the CD player to wean her off it?

Consort · 04/08/2012 14:22

Have got a good giggle imaging you styling baby's hair before each nap. Sorry naps are a problem, we have the same issue, and DD wakes through the night! She's 7 months and hasn't yet slept through...going to have to check out the sheep. We do have Freddie the frog (think that's the name)...

PrincessOfChina · 04/08/2012 14:24

We used a White Noise app with DD until she was about 6 months. She wouldn't switch off to go to sleep without it and then one day we stopped and she was fine. Just hope it's as easy to get rid off the dummy!

googietheegg · 04/08/2012 16:00

flosie amazing! How much does she eat in the day? DD is ff on about 150 x 5

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 19:20

googietheegg this will make you laugh....my little greedy angel is on 240 x 5 lol. But the HV just said carry on if she's hungry which she is and she's on extra hungry formula milk! Although some days she doesn't take all of it, she just has hungrier days than others.

A rep came into my work a few months ago, and for some reason we got chatting about sleep, she can't sleep without the noise of a hairdryer! When she was little her Mum would switch it off when she was sound asleep now she has it recorded! She must be in her forties. Break the habit now!

JustFabulous · 04/08/2012 19:28

You definitely need to stop leaving the hair dryer on and look at getting a white noise CD. It can't be safe to have it on, on the floor I presume, for an hour or more.

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 19:31

Gosh in her forties! Yes I should break the habit now I suppose but then again as I said she doesn't need it for bed time just nap time

Tell me more about Ewan...

cupcakelover1983 · 04/08/2012 19:40

DS has a cuddly giraffe that plays four different sounds - one is white noise. It is brilliant! It settles him no bother and he's now almost 2. You can get it from
Amazon and it's made by a company called cloud 9. I use it to help me settle of I have a migraine as it seems to stop the pain log enough to let me sleep!

sabbby82 · 04/08/2012 19:47

My ds is the same, I put cool button on hair dryer and leave it, he can settle without it but sleeps much longer with it. I have found a hair dryer app on iPhone but it needs ''refreshing' so not much help. White noise cd sounds better though.

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 19:59

tethersphotifinish Ewan the dream sheep is available from quite a few places but is cheaper on Ebay which is where I got mine. About £25 I think. He's got a light in the middle of his belly which glows a pinky red to mimic the colour they see on the womb and each foot plays a different sound. One is a harp, her favourite is rain and the other two are actual recordings from inside the womb.

He is better to use straight from birth rather than introduced later on but still give it a try! He works perfectly at bed time just doesn't do the trick at nap time. Smile

Thanks Flosie, off to google Smile

PickledLily · 04/08/2012 21:12

Similar issue here but with (dare I admit it) a running tap. Radio static sometimes works and occasionally the hair dryer (on cold setting). And my DH holding her and humming very very deeply - the resonance calms her.

A recording doesn't work, it has to be The Real Thing.

I wonder if Ewan only works at night because she's tired from the day? I found my DD loved Ewan's harp music for the first few weeks, but it just seems to annoy her now. Sigh.

BikeRaceRunningRaceNoSkiing · 04/08/2012 21:14

I just Goggled "cd of hairdryer" and there seem to be loads of cds and mp3s out there.
