when did your child sleep through the night reliably? (highly unscientific survey)

By sleep through, I mean a reliable 10 hour stretch, so 7-5, 8-6 or thereabouts.

  1. 0-3 months
  2. 3-6 months
  3. 6-12 months
  4. 12-18 months
  5. 18-24 months
  6. 24-36 months
  7. 36+ months (please state!)
  8. HA HA HA HA HA what is this sleep of which you speak?

just curious, after being told by family that DS is clearly very delayed and DH and I are shite parents, as all babies should sleep through between 3 and 6 months. And then speaking to other parents who had 'good babies' who slept through early.

We are currently somewhere between 6. and 8. on the above list (he's 29 months and up several times a night most nights)

thanks :)

DD slept through from 7.5 weeks , 8-7am ...was EBF, excellent feeder and very big baby so had capacity to do it. I think to a certain extent it is not something you can really control.

(I actually used to get a bit embarrassed bout it when with other mums and just used to pretend I still got up in the night!!)

Now 13wks pgt with DC2 who is bound to be a nightmare after my super sleeper!!!

ItWasThePenguins · 09/03/2012 12:59

9hrs a day at 5 weeks.

Solo · 09/03/2012 13:00

Can't recall with Ds, but I think in the main, he slept through by a year.

Dd was 19 months! she was dreadful! I was saved by a thread on here and have never looked back.

NotMostPeople · 09/03/2012 13:07

All three of mine between 12 - 15 weeks.

They are 12, 10 & 9 and still sleep well. They did 7 - 7 except DS who'd wake at 5am until he was 2 years. He's still the first one up at the weekends.

Until 10 weeks I'd feed on demand and get an idea of their pattern. From 10 weeks I'd take that pattern and only feed when I knew they were hungry if they woke at other times I'd settle them briefly with no fuss and leave. Within a few weeks they'd be sleeping through. I know it sounds a bit smug, but I am crap without sleep so I was determined to get a routine going.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 09/03/2012 13:09

dc1 2)
dc2 5) after stopping bf

SpanishFly · 09/03/2012 13:09

I'm astounded! I don't know anyone whose kids were waking regularly after a year old. The oned who are 3+, isn't there SOME sort of bribe/reward for them staying in bed all night? This isn't a criticism, btw, I'm just genuinely surprised about this

Galaxymum · 09/03/2012 13:11

We come in the Ha ha ha category - sleep through? What is that?

DD is 5.9 and has aspergers. I think we can still count on two hands the sleep through nights. DH and I are still up 3-4 times a night with her. It's bliss when we get a 4 hour stretch. That's a conversation starter in the morning!

Kveta · 09/03/2012 13:44

Spanishfly I don't think it's as easy as all that - as I said, my child is only 29 months, but nothing seems to convince him that sleep is a good thing. He's knackered all the time, and blatantly needs to sleep, but just can't seem to actually do so. An adult could do something medical about this, or hypnosis or the like, but it doesn't seem to be an option for kids.

we have recently tried a chocolate button reward scheme - if he stays in his room all night, he gets a button. No buttons have been consumed so far.

you just can't make someone sleep, sadly :( no matter how long you talk to them about database management :(

  1. For both ds1 and ds2.
SpanishFly · 09/03/2012 14:00

I know you can't make someone sleep, but meant a reward for not waking anyone else if it is dark, for example.
What do you all do when your kids wake during the night (and I don't mean babies, I mean older toddlers and kids)? Do they need a drink/cuddle? I.e why are they waking?

Fevrier · 09/03/2012 14:00

11 months - til illnesses and teeth etc disrupted. But essentially 11 months after stopping b feeding.

Not sure when dd will though .....

In my experience so far (2 dc) what you do does have an effect.

TheOneWithTheHair · 09/03/2012 14:07

SpanishFly when ds2 wakes he comes to my bed with the hope of sleeping in it. I don't speak to him, cuddle him, give him a drink etc. I walk him back to his bed and leave again. Sometimes, if I'm lucky he goes straight back to sleep. More often he shouts for up to 30 mins. This happens several times most nights.

I have done a reward chart. He gets a sticker when he sleeps through and every 5 stickers earns him a trip to the pound shop to chose whichever toy he wants. It took about a month to get that first trip to the shop and he's only had one trip since. We started 6months ago.

I can't see what else I can do but persevere.

juneau · 09/03/2012 14:08

Both my boys started realiably sleeping through from 7-6.30 at 9 months. I'm just getting used to getting a full night of sleep again and I have to say it's bliss Grin

4madboys · 09/03/2012 14:11

ds1 started sleeping through at 3yrs.

ds2 was 2yrs

ds3 was between 2-3rys

ds4 was probably 8mths? but he sucked his thumb and self comforted.

dd is 15mths and she is pretty good, sometimes needs dummy replacement!

all have co-slept and went into their own beds between ages 2and half to 3 and a bit..

i would say with most of them we were getting decent chunks ie 4-6hrs by 18mths and good 10hrs between 2-3yrs, nearer to 2yrs really, but variable depending on which child and if they were teething, poorly etc.

my eldest is 12 nad still not a great sleeper, he doesnt disturb us tho, just moans to us the next day!

redridingwolf · 09/03/2012 14:11

Tonks - where do you get your 3y - 6y sleeping bags from? Grobag only do up to 36mths I think, haven't seen any for older children but would like one for my tall 2.6yo!

Levantine · 09/03/2012 14:11

DS1 nearly four

DS2 is 16 months and nowhere near sleeping properly

4madboys · 09/03/2012 14:13

all mine ever needed was a bfeed, or a cuddle, pat etc and they woudl doze back off, they never really woke properly and wanted to get up play etc, it was just the need for reassurance that we were there iyswim?

occasionlly if poorly or out of sorts they would have more wakeful periods in the night, but i am BORING as FUCK mummy and it never lasted long as we stayed in bed, lights off, no talking etc.

4madboys · 09/03/2012 14:14

redridingwolf grobag used to do grobags for 3-6yrs old i remember thinking about getting them for ds2 who LOVED his grobags, do they not make them anymore? they were a limited range, not so many patterns to choose from but they did do them!

Quenelle · 09/03/2012 14:17

I think the one I recently bought from TK Maxx is 3-6 yo. DS is a very tall 2.8 year old.

4madboys · 09/03/2012 14:17

www.gro-store.co.uk/catalogsearch/advanced/result/?tog%5B%5D=15&size%5B%5D=41

here they do them in age 3-6yrs on the website!

4madboys · 09/03/2012 14:18

you can click on the link and at the side there is a bit where you choose a size, they do age 3-6yrs and you choose a tog rating, the link i gave is the 0.5 tog ones but they do 1 tog and 2.5 togs as well there is also a 6-10yr size!!!

MakeTeaNotWar · 09/03/2012 14:21

8 months when solids took over from breastfeeding. 18 months now and can sleep in til 10 in the morning!

TheFoosa · 09/03/2012 14:24

HuwEdwards seriously, do we share the same child?!

she's still unreliable at 9

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/03/2012 14:24

DC1 was an 8 Ha Ha Ha, although I didn't feel like laughing at the time.
DC2 was a 6, I'd say just coming upto 3.

We are obviously shite parents too Grin.

Ciske · 09/03/2012 14:26

DD slept through from about 3 months onwards.
