when did your child sleep through the night reliably? (highly unscientific survey)

By sleep through, I mean a reliable 10 hour stretch, so 7-5, 8-6 or thereabouts.

  1. 0-3 months
  2. 3-6 months
  3. 6-12 months
  4. 12-18 months
  5. 18-24 months
  6. 24-36 months
  7. 36+ months (please state!)
  8. HA HA HA HA HA what is this sleep of which you speak?

just curious, after being told by family that DS is clearly very delayed and DH and I are shite parents, as all babies should sleep through between 3 and 6 months. And then speaking to other parents who had 'good babies' who slept through early.

We are currently somewhere between 6. and 8. on the above list (he's 29 months and up several times a night most nights)

thanks :)

DS1: 11 weeks (1), albeit after 7 weeks of screaming 5pm - 1am EVERY night
DS2: 10 months (3), albeit after night weaning with DH cuddling / patting back to sleep for 2 nights, he then slept through until 5am

'Did' exactly the same with both, BF on demand (until I was climbing the walls with exhaustion with DS2)

Kayzr · 09/03/2012 11:11

DS1: 6 weeks
DS2: 11 months

But DS2 is now 3 and seems to have stopped sleeping through every night.

seeker · 09/03/2012 11:12

I refuse to say on the grounds thwt it will depress people too much.

pipoca · 09/03/2012 11:13

DS from 5 months did 12 hr stretches. DD is 10 mo and currently experiencing evil sleep training (shh pat, and a bit of cc).

Kveta · 09/03/2012 11:13

bertie we co-slpet and bf on demand until he was 18 months or so. He was still waking regularly, wakes up for the day between 4 and 5 every day (unless we're in a hurry, then he will go through until we wake him, little swine). He has always been a bad sleeper (best sleep in his first year was the 5 hour stretch immediately after he was born :o closely followed by the 5 hours he slept after his 8 week jabs. then it was waking every 45 mins to 2 hours for a year, and ofen not going back to sleep, even after a feed).

we are planning to have DC2 in a cot ASAP, but if we need to co-sleep, that's fine by both of us. DS never ever slept in his moses basket, and would scream blue murder if swaddled, then once he got his arms free would give us the most pissy look a newborn could manage. Even the midwife who helped delivered him commented on his look of fury at being swaddled by her :o

TheOne yup, no support once your baby is past about 3 months, as by then if they aren't sleeping, it's down to parenting. Hmm and we have very little smuggery wrt DS... he's somewhat, ahem, challenging at times

I wouldn't count sleeping through as 10 hours but they realiable slept from 10-7 from 12 weeks

BertieBotts · 09/03/2012 11:27

Grin Oh yes DS was exactly like that with swaddling!!

Flisspaps · 09/03/2012 11:28

14 months

PMTIsMe · 09/03/2012 11:30

DS1 - 5 years
DS2 - 18 months
Me - zombie

TheOneWithTheHair · 09/03/2012 11:32

You see I thought I would be nearing the end by now. Ds2 is 3. Hearing about the ones who are 5+ is just horrifying!

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 09/03/2012 11:44

Ds somewhere around number 4 I think. Only because he went thru a phase after he dropped his 10-11pm feed, that he would still wake up at this time, and want a cuddle for a few minutes before falling asleep again. Otherwise would have been number 3.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/03/2012 11:46

Ds1 at around 20 weeks
Ds2 still not reliably sleeping through at 4yo. Have just learned to live with it.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 09/03/2012 11:47

Ds - 3yrs +

Dd- 3-6months until molars coming in now.

MustControlFistOfDeath · 09/03/2012 11:54

DS is 15mo, he is and always has been a terrible sleeper

He slept through ONCE at 8wo, I remember the exact date it well

I will be in the nr 8 category on your list Sad

Kveta · 09/03/2012 11:58

ok, up to now, sample size of 88.

  1. 0-3 months 23%
  2. 3-6 months 17%
  3. 6-12 months 15%
  4. 12-18 months 8%
  5. 18-24 months 9%
  6. 24-36 months 8%
  7. 36+ months (please state!) 20% (ages were 3+, 3-4, 3.4, 4, 4, 5, 5.6, 7.6, 10, 10, 17)

in other words, 55% of them slept through before a year, the rest of us are doomed...

FreakoidOrganisoid · 09/03/2012 11:58

Both were 2yo, like a switch was flipped.

The difference was that dd would wake once or twice for a feed/cuddle and go straight back to sleep whereas ds would wake many times and scream and fret for 2 hours at a time

Kveta · 09/03/2012 11:59

sorry MustControl, you were not included in my stats :o will update them later if I get enough results!!

DD1 3 and a half years before sleeping through reliably, hoping DD2 due June will sleep through from birth lol xx

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 09/03/2012 12:01

DD (now 3.5) slept 11-7 at 5 days old, then went 7-7 at bout 10 weeks and will sleep through the smoke alarm going off.

DS (now 13 weeks) slept 7-7 at 6 weeks and so far still does.

This has all been baby led, nothing we've done. We haven't got 'good' babies nor are babies who don't sleep 'bad'. I just grow good sleepers. Is it genetic do you think? DP and I were early sleepers as babies apparently and both heavy sleepers now.

piratecat · 09/03/2012 12:05

erm she was 4.

piss taker of the highest order.

hairypotter · 09/03/2012 12:08

I agree with MrsA DD1 slept through at 6 weeks and DD2 at 8 weeks.

I'm not kidding myself it was my amazing parenting, I think I just got lucky. My friend whose DS it 9 (same age as my DD2) still hasn't had a full nights sleep Sad

SunnilyEnough · 09/03/2012 12:14

ds1 at 9 months, ds2 at 16 months.

ds1 just stopped waking up in the night at 9mo.
with ds2, I was still bf'ing him twice a night and had had enough; I started just giving him water instead when he woke up. He cried and I cuddled him and carried him around till he fell asleep - took about an hour and a half. After the second night of that, he slept through, no looking back.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 09/03/2012 12:19

DS 10 weeks, DD 11 weeks from 7-7

CappyHunt · 09/03/2012 12:33

DD1 - 7 weeks
DD2 - 3 weeks
DS - maybe about 6 months, but he was very prem and spent the first 4 months in hospital and was quite 'well trained' when he came home.
DD3 - 12/13 weeks ish.

I'm classing through the night as 9pm-7am

CappyHunt · 09/03/2012 12:39

I meant to add - sleeping through the night as babies under 6m rather than what they do now.

The older three are teens and sleep when they sleep Grin

DD3 is 3 and needs a good 14 hours a night. She's on her arse by Thursday with tiredness. Week nights she goes to bed at 7 and I wake her at 8 for school. On weekends she goes to bed around half 7, but will sleep until half 9 at the absolute earliest, more like half 10. She appears to think she is a teenager.
