When did you stop using sleepbags?

DS, 16 months, is in a sleepbag and seems comfy. But I'm not convinced he's warm enough so thinking about using a duvet (he already has two layers under the 2.5 tog sleep bag).

When did you switch from sleep bags to a duet? DS is still in a cot though so not sure how it'll work!

TIA

I'm watching this as in exact same position with 18 month old dd. I am thinking she needs to be old enough to cover herself back up if the duvet moves, which she wouldn't think to do at the moment, but interested in what others think.

Iggly · 03/02/2011 20:10

Yes I was thinking the same Bertie about re - covering himself!

about 14 months. He kicks it off most of the time, but he's a hot little being so I'm glad he can help to regulate his own body temp. He's still in his cot and now his legs are free he does windmill around somewhat..

thisisyesterday · 03/02/2011 20:14

i didn't, we;ve always used blankets witho9ut a problem

but if you are happy with the sleeping bags other than the cold issue then why not just dress him warmer? add a cardigan? or just a blanket over the top?

Iggly · 03/02/2011 20:15

I'm worried he'll end up with his head underneath - does yours hero? or does he wake up when the duvet is kicked off?

Stayed in sleeping bag until nearly three he loved them. He'd lob over the edge of his cot and walk in it he just is a snuggle bunny

Iggly · 03/02/2011 20:17

thisisyesterday I don't like adding too many layers because I'm not sure DS is comfy like that. I figure I have to switch to a duvet or blankets at some point so think that if the bags aren't warm enough, may as well now (especially as he's on the cusp of growing out of his current bags).

I used this combi sleeping bag for my dc, it also has been used by lots of friends' children, it has washed well. It kept them warm in winter and because it has two layers and the sleeves zip off it is good for summer too. DD was at least 3 possibly slightly older when I stopped using it. I did sometimes put a blanket over her in winter in our cold house.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/02/2011 20:28

About 18 months when she refused to be zipped into it.

HeroShrew · 03/02/2011 20:30

he doesn't seem to end up underneath, more likely to be on top of it. If yours turns out to be a 'burrower' I don't think it'd be an issue, baby duvets are quite light and not the heavier feather ones that could cling.

BornToFolk · 03/02/2011 20:30

Until about 2.5 when he outgrew the biggest size. I was worried about him being cold but I thought he'd wake up or otherwise let us know if he was too cold and he never did!

We got a single duvet and put it lengthwise across the cot...if that makes sense! Then you can tuck it in firmly on both sides.

gree · 03/02/2011 20:32

dd2 is 20 months and shes still in hers. Im hoping it will delay her climbing out of the cot.

CURLYMAMMA · 03/02/2011 20:32

Aged 3 when moved to own bed

CuppaTeaJanice · 03/02/2011 20:34

When he went into a bed at nearly 2 yrs old. He'd climb out and bounce along the hallway, sack race style. Very funny but we figured that a proper duvet would be more practical.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/02/2011 20:34

Still uses one at 2.3 years. With a blanket on top on the colder nights.

Iggly · 03/02/2011 20:34

Thanks all

Hero what tog is the duvet?

Borntofolk what tog did you use?

With DD it was the summer she was 2. She was still prone to kicking off blankets, so wanted to wait til warm nights. She went into a bed at 2.5yo so wanted her to be used to duvet/blankets beforehand.

Plan to do the same this summer when DS is 2.

Both DCs have always used blankets for daytime naps.

BoattoBolivia · 03/02/2011 20:51

When dd moved to her own bed but I can't remember when that was!!!!
We just put a blanket over ds if it is very cold, but that is still warmer than if he wriggled out from under a duvet.
I think the sleeping bag really helped keep dd from trying to climb out of the cot.

mum295 · 03/02/2011 21:08

Just after 2 years old, DD told me she didn't want it anymore.

pointythings · 03/02/2011 21:13

We always used 2.5 tog bags in winter (room lightly heated, just a sleepsuit on), a 1 tog in spring/autumn and a 0.5 tog bag in summer - if very hot, just a nappy on and a fan in the room.

Both DDs abandoned their bags at about 27 months - simply refused to have them on. They were both very verbal and were able to tell me that they wanted a duvet like a big girl, so I bought them 2.5 tog duvets and duvet covers. They were in adult single beds from about 1 year old - I do believe the bags kept them from realising they could climb out so they never did it even when they were out of the bag Grin

BornToFolk · 03/02/2011 21:29

oooh, now you're asking! It's from Ikea, and is one of those ones that comes in two parts that popper together. He's never had it like that though, even with the coldest weather he's been toasty with just one bit on (and fleecy jamas!)

Beamur · 03/02/2011 21:31

I stopped when DD could stand and walk. No problems with getting cold etc with a duvet - even though her room is quite chilly.

notcitrus · 03/02/2011 21:37

Ds and dn still in grobags at 2.5 and 2.9 - the size for 'up to 3 years'.

Guess will have to get duvets soon. Do other people use a single duvet folded half under a cotbed mattress?

mum295 · 03/02/2011 21:40

notcitrus On DD's cotbed I use a single duvet, put pillow on top, lie her on top of it, and then fold it back over her feet so it come up to her chin (she's short mind you).
