How long before you give up? He's been crying now for over a hour and is exhausted but still won't give up. Dp won't let me near him, say's we have to stick with it. I'm tearing my hair out!

I would go in, settle him, say reassuring things but don't pick him up. how old?

SleepySuzy · 08/09/2005 19:36

Keep going, it does work. Just try to remember, he is not in pain, he is crying for attention, and he won't remember this when he is older!

starlover · 08/09/2005 19:37

i thought you were supposed to go in every 10 minutes or whatever and just calm them down and settle them back into bed?

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:38

We're (or DP is) going in every few minutes. He's 2 weeks off a year old..

Oh poor you monkeytrousers! I must admit, I can't let dd cry for too long, and I also can't let her carry on crying once it gets past the wingeing and she sounds genuinely upset.... I agree with bundle, I'm sure he needs to know he isn't being ignored or hasn't been forgotten/abandoned.... Can you pick him up and give him a reassuring cuddle? That might be all he needs to drop off, especially if he is this tired.....

bundle · 08/09/2005 19:39

I would go in, do the settling, but leave it a little longer each time

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:39

I'm not damaging him am I?

I know it's a daft question. I'm so afraid he'll hate me in the morning

OP posts:
bundle · 08/09/2005 19:39

ask him to lie down (assuming he's stomping around the cot) and rub his back. does he have a dummy?

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:40

He gets a cuddle each time + a kiss..

MT, i haven't done CC with ds as he normally gets himself off to sleep.
however on some occassions he does just cry and cry... sometimes when he has got really really overwrought i just go and give him a big cuddle and a rock in the rocking chair and then pop him back into bed and he goes off....

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:42

No dummy. We say 'lie down, go to sleep'..Dp's in there again..he did just fall asleep for 5 mins then but has just woken up again.

teddy? blanky? I am a great believer in transitional objects

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:44

Only transitional object is mammy's boob! Will be getting another on sharpish. Will go try to soothe him again..

dd1 used to take photos of us to bed with her...

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:45

dp singing to him now which is what I usually do..sob!

OP posts:
monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:46

Oh, that's a good idea Bubdle. I might tape myself singing too. Dream a little dream by the Mama's and Papa's

OP posts:
monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:48

Is it normal for them to cry so much?

OP posts:
monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:48

Maybe the Mama Cass version would be better..

OP posts:
bundle · 08/09/2005 19:49

yes. dd1 used to make herself sick through so much crying/coughing/spluttering.

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 19:55

How long did iy take you Bundle?

OP posts:
bundle · 08/09/2005 20:07

oh god, i've blotted it out, I really can't remember. more than a day but less than a week

monkeytrousers · 08/09/2005 20:11

Just been up and comforted him but didn't get him out of the cot. He's asleep now...poor little monkey.

Thanks for coming in my half hour of need girls!

I was given very good advice re: putting them down to bed (either at night or during the day for a nap).... behave as though it's just FANTASTIC that they are in bed, "oooh, look, how LOVELY, what a treat, your bed, you're having a nap, you lucky girl/boy...." + lots of enthusiastic noises. Sounds mad, but now dd generally goes to bed with a big smile on her face (not always mind you, but I never thought she would fall for it, and she has! ).
Not much help with your cc though....

bundle · 08/09/2005 20:13

oh and another one: put favourite toy into shoe box lined with tissues/fabric for its bed, next to or in cot. lavish praise on said toy as it goes to bed.
