How many adults out there wear helmets?

Or like me do you put your kids in them but not wear one yourself. Since the news today I'm thinking of getting one.

I'm the same as you. DD has one, I never even think to wear one. I probably should, but I never even wore one when I was a child....

ladyhelen2 · 18/03/2009 18:34

I'm a snowboarder and started wearing one last year. I made DH wear one 4 years ago though. He's a bit more gung ho than me. Thi

lazymumofteenagesons · 18/03/2009 18:38

I suppose wearing a helmet gets rid of the problem of finding a hat that looks good!

never have but will next year after superb crash on last run, concussion for 3 days, ouch!

PinkBubblesGoApe · 18/03/2009 18:41

I did for the first time last ski hols. More comfy than a hat imo; warmer and not so itchy.

BrownSuga · 18/03/2009 18:44

I haven't, but I will next year. We only went one day this year so didn't get them for this season.

DH will DEFINITELY be wearing one. He's only boarded 3 times and each time injured himself. First time - fracture in back, 2nd time - broke elbow, third time - i told him not to tell me, but something to do with his wrist.

madwomanintheattic · 18/03/2009 18:48

we all do. kids, dh and i, grandparents.

dh had a brain injury (accident) and dd2 has brain damage too (birth), so tbh it really isn't worth risking any more drama with our track record lol. where we ski quite a lot of people wear them, but not all. don't even think about it any more tbh, they just get packed with the rest of the kit.

lazymumofteenagesons · 18/03/2009 18:54

You've persuaded me. I'll buy one when I get there and wait for the hysterical laughter and rude comments. (along the lines of - 'surely you don't need a helmet to sit in the cafe and drink hot chocolate!'

We all do and have for a number of years.

We ride as well so sort of always seemed natural.

madwomanintheattic · 18/03/2009 19:00

get some suction-on ears if you want to stand out lol.

i take mine off in the cafe - it provides a safe haven for my gloves. v useful.

Haribosmummy · 18/03/2009 19:02

I wear one cycling but never skiing.

drowninginlaundry · 18/03/2009 19:02

I snowboard and always, always wear a helmet! got a really pretty one as well, with pink flowers

when i got one, funny enough started riding a lot better and faster as less scared of wiping out. Obviously that's not their intended purpose, but still...

jicky · 18/03/2009 23:58

I do, we started in helmets as soon as we took the children. Seems to be the 'norm' where we have skied. I might not be as reckless as the dc but am certainly more inept!

CaurnieBred · 19/03/2009 10:24

I got one this year as I whacked my head quite hard on an icey piste last year. Was DD's (4) first time skiing this year and thought it was only fair if she was wearing one that I should wear one too. Think might be pursuading DH to get one for next year. Mines is a pretty pastel pink colour and makes it easier to spot me on the slopes. DD has just got the boring, grey one from Lidl!

PinkBubblesGoApe · 19/03/2009 11:39

I love those helmet covers they sell in the US for kids - saw one little girl with a full-on princess hat over hers, cone shaped with streamers and all...

Kiwinyc · 19/03/2009 12:30

DD1 does but DH refuses. Despite breaking his neck (fractured two vertebrae) skiing in the past. Reckons theres as much chance falling over and whacking his head walking across the road. At least since his accident he skies well within his ability as he's afraid of being helicoptered off the slopes again!

janinlondon · 19/03/2009 13:58

DD pointed out this morning that "all the professionals wear them". Yes, we'll be getting some for next year.

Work2hard · 20/03/2009 18:05

Yes DH and I have been wearing them (as well as the kids). I am so glad we've made it a family rule.

Pennies · 20/03/2009 18:07

We wear them. I think it should be illegal not to.

hatwoman · 20/03/2009 18:24

I had quite a bad accident last year (helicoptered off the slopes in a neck brace - although, in actual fact, the only injuries were a huge gash over my eye and facial bruising that made me look like I'd done a round with Tyson). it was on the first day of the holiday so on the last two days I took a few tentative greens and blues - wearing a helmet. dh has been this year and he's bought one. when we go at easter I'll do the same.

I was very lucky. and I can tell you, lying on the slope, unable to see, being screamed at by a medic not to move an inch, being abandoned on the blood wagon while the helicopter landed while everyone else retreated to a safe distance, throwing up in the helicopter, and going to hospital (2 hospitals in fact) alone, was utterly hideous.

we have amazing amazing bodies that allow us to live our lives, that allow us to do brilliant things like ski-ing, but they are very fragile and need looking after.

having said all that I absolutely don;t think it's an issue for the law. It's a decision that's up to the individual.

Wheelybug · 20/03/2009 18:27

I have never worn one but last year did say to DH next time we should get some. We're not skiing this year as just had a baby but next year we will. It doesn't hurt to wear one does it ?

mackie9117 · 20/03/2009 18:39

We are just about to go on our first family ski trip. dd is 9 and will of course wear one. I have skied loads and never worn a helmet but me and dh will be wearing one this time. when i skied in january with a group of about 30 friends the only accidents were other skiers out of control. but it seems even the most gentle fall can be fatal. i'm usually pretty robust about stuff (health and safety etc) but this has shaken me up a bit.

olliepolly · 20/03/2009 19:17

Our three dc wear them and now so do we.
Fell and banged head severely (taken out unexpectedly by a snowboarder who took my legs out from behind)
Fortunately not badly hurt ,all 4 adults skiing together then went staight to ski shop and bought helmets,we all got one that suits us! Wore them this year again and I would say that helmet wearing amongst adults is rising fast.

DebInAustria · 22/03/2009 08:49

yes we all wear them and since moving to Austria 4 years ago I have seen a marked increase in the locals wearing them.

DebInAustria · 22/03/2009 08:50

wheelybug - some helmets are uncomfy - try a few on and get the one that's best for your shape/size head.
