I want something proper but stylish!

Not Patagonia!

😂😂

Planks! https://www.planksclothing.com/ Their ski pants are amaaaaaazing. Really long (but come with a clever pulley thingy that you can use to shorten them if you need) and high waisted so you don't get cold back on a chairlift. Which suits my sensible middle age but they also look cool (without looking like I'm trying to be down with the kidzz) Strobe also good. https://uk.strobebrand.com/ I have a shell overjacket which is perfect for Easter skiing.

Edited

I second Planks. Great mitten ski gloves that are very warm

EveInEden · 08/01/2025 23:27

I have a Protest jacket, tops and fleeces. I found their style different.

Yikesthathurt · 09/01/2025 07:08

My daughter has Dope, sister company of Montec, which looks very like Strobe

massistar · 09/01/2025 09:52

Snowboarder here. Most of those outfits are strictly skiier only. 😁

We wear a mix of Planks, Volkom, DC, Vans etc. A slightly more forgiving baggy look although you run the risk of looking like an eternal teenager.

LivesinLondon2000 · 09/01/2025 10:26

We were skiing last week and I saw a few Poivre Blanc jackets - especially the metallic coloured puffer type ones - which seem to be quite in at the moment. Quite tempted as they do look really good. Normally I go for more functional/outdoorsy type ski jackets in an attempt to convey ‘serious skier’ vibes (which are instantly destroyed when people see me actually ski 😂)

Ha! Also snowboarder :) the Orthovox stuff is definitely boarder friendly, if not wallet friendly!

NoKnit · 09/01/2025 16:15

I'm a boarder and I got myself dungaree trousers from Burton a few years ago. They have zips at the sides for going to the loo.

I also have a coat from Horsefeathers it's a longer style. The pockets are great I don't need to take a rucksack fits all my stuff.

I couldn't care less what others think of those brands or if I look like eternal teenager. Let's face it as I'm getting closer to 50 each year people do seem to wonder why I'm still snowboarding. One young bloke said to me couple of years ago 'Oh I thought snowboarding was something women did in their 20s' erm well I was in my 20s when I started you berk.

NoKnit · 09/01/2025 16:17

Oh and of all the brands mentioned up there think the only ones I've heard of are protest and vans 🤔 neither of which I thought were good for ski stuff more summer surf type stuff. I'm obviously clueless🙈

OooPourUsACupLove · 09/01/2025 16:54

I do a lot of backcountry so I do need a rucksack

Do you have a split board? That is what puts me off ski touring I can't ski all that well much more confident on a snowboard. I've never met many boarders that do touring.

To be fair I probably should have said slackcountry not backcountry! So not multi day tours, just starting from a lift served area and hiking further up or out to a different descent with a local guide, which is a reasonable proposition in snowboard boots. The pack is for the avi kit, the day's food (plus emergency), extrra layers and to strap the board to.

That said I have done some single day splitboard tours and enjoyed them, though it's been more going up on skins to get to untouched areas than mixing ups and downs over the day.

I'd like to try a proper multi day tour on a splitboard but I'd want to go with a boarder guide and group not skiers because the faff factor is higher on a splitboard and a group that is mostly skiers get frustrated (unless the whole group are really excellent in which case they have nothing to prove so they don't get wound up)

Back in the 90s doing snowboard tours with snowshoes was a thing, does that still happen?

massistar · 10/01/2025 07:56

@NoKnit I'm in my 50s and still snowboarding! It's our generation that started it! I have made the move to step in bindings though which has been an absolute game changer. 😁

CatherinedeBourgh · 10/01/2025 07:59

I love picture organic, but they are quite pricey.

For less expensive I have found that Oakley do surprisingly good jackets. Both ds and I have one now.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 10/01/2025 11:25

Just a head up on Dope and Montec if you're bothered about appearances. Although the actual gear seems to be decent they're a bit looked down on by "proper" snowboarders as a bit of an influencer favourite brand.

catin8oots · 10/01/2025 11:38

OOSC CLOTHING sorry for the dodgy link on phone

Yep, they are not respected at all

I think for next season I shall get an arcteryx jacket. Pricey but do seem to last. Dc all use spyder jackets.

At expense of tangent - Is there any function difference of step in vs normal? DS used step in this trip and it was amazing for the rest of us (all skiers) as didn't have to wait for him to clip in, and he also much preferred them, but I wonder why more boarders don't use them as seems like a no brainer.

massistar · 10/01/2025 15:31

I think it depends on the type. Step on like the Burton ones have been around for a while but was limited as you had to have boots that were compatible and less control/support as no binding over toes and ankles. Mine are Nidecker and it's a step in so you can use your normal boots (important for me with skinny ankles as have very specific boots) and it still has a proper binding which makes it feel much more secure. The skiers in my group were very happy too! Plus no wet bum or busting my trouser button post lunch. Win win!

NoKnit · 10/01/2025 18:13

I'm possibly a bit behind the times on the bindings, step in ones are not the same as flow are they? Flow bindings are absolutely useless in the powder.

I've always had issues with any bindings other than those from Burton. I knackered my last ones along with my Feelgood board. I've got a new board and bindings from Romes (I think that's what they're called unless it's Rides) and a screw came off the binding. I've had rubbish one fron the hire shop as couldn't find any else.

I'm going to Google end of winter sale step in bindings from burton.

We've been snowboarding this week so I'm in the mood.

massistar · 10/01/2025 19:05

I'm not sure about Flow but I think I the burton ones are open right? As in you don't have the toe strap and ratchet across the front? These are my Nidecker ones. I absolutely love them.
