Anyone not enjoy skiing?

On a ski holiday. 4 days in. Lessons and then afternoons free. Had lessons before we left. Feel like I am just about tolerating it. First holiday.

Everyone you talk to seems to be passionate about it.

Sorry, previous post was on the wrong thread!

I love skiing, for me it feels like an amazing mix of flying and dancing around the curves of the mountain, but I am one of those annoying people who learnt as a child and I do very much appreciate not everyone enjoys it.

If you're skiing in a group the better skiers must always choose routes that the least confident can comfortably manage - it's really unfair to push people to go down runs they don't feel happy with.

QueenOfThorns · 23/02/2023 21:35

Hate it. I stay at home for the peace and quiet. Which is also a lot cheaper!

littlefireseverywhere · 23/02/2023 21:40

I went for a week, years ago. Had lessons before I went. Hated it, never been again. Although I did see how people could love it! Just not for me.

catsnore · 23/02/2023 21:41

Never been, never want to. I just know I won't like it and I'll probably break something. There are many things I'd like to try but skiing is not one of them!

Helloits2023 · 23/02/2023 21:45

I’ve done two trips, still hated it by the end of the second and that’s that for me. @ToffeeNotCoffee summed it up perfectly. This year my DP will go with his friends and I’ll have a lovely week home alone.

For the posters who go to the resort but do non-snow-dependent activities (drinking hot chocolate/reading etc), does it not feel like a huge waste of money because of how much flights and accommodation are in ski season? Or do you justify the cost because of how much partner/kids love it? Just wondering about my future options…

Totally pointless activity. Cold, wet, exhausting, boring.

Not for me, I'm always boiling hot because I'm not properly fit I put too many layers on and it's always sunny when I go. The scenery up top is amazing. I'll concede exhausting though 😂

The expensive bits are things like lift passes, lessons and ski hire. Its a lot cheaper not having those bits for one person!

Yep

I’m with you, I don’t enjoy skiing much. I enjoyed snowboarding more once I’d got the hang of it. But even so, the slopes in the French Alps were crowded compared to what I imagined.

MrsOrange · 23/02/2023 22:21

DH started skiing at 5, DC love it and now very proficient. I started at 30 odd and hate it, but can do green/blue/some red and have no desire at all to do blacks or further. So we have a couple family ski sessions during the week but they go off and do their thing the rest of the time.

Snow-trekking is my answer. - I absolutely love it. You need less layers, definitely burn more calories in less time and can get away from the crowds.

KittyTitty · 23/02/2023 22:24

Lovely scenery. Hotel view, early morning.

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/02/2023 22:26

I went a few times in my twenties, only learned as an adult and fear always kept me from fully enjoying it.

I did eventually learn to love long lazy blue runs, ideally scenic, with intermittent wine or hot chocolate breaks, so maybe aim for that level? Grin

user1497207191 · 23/02/2023 22:31

I’ve been a few times. I always found lessons hard, progressed too fast leaving me behind and stressing me out trying to keep up. I stopped taking lessons and was far happier just doing my own thing and progressing at my own pace. Once you’ve learned the basics of how to turn and how to stop, you really don’t need lessons.

Merrow · 23/02/2023 22:34

I've been once and hated the skiing element. Ended up with permanent nerve damage in my foot and realised the purpose of skiing is to go downhill very fast, and I don't like going fast.

However! I had an excellent holiday. Sent DP off to the slopes and I stayed in our accomodation drinking wine and reading books in front of the fire. It was brilliant.

AreBearsCatholic · 23/02/2023 22:38

I love it now but I didn’t until I could
do parallel turns and never fell down.

Bunce1 · 23/02/2023 22:50

I really admire all the adult beginners because I think it’s a hell of a sport to master as an adult. It’s extreme you need special insurance. It’s dangerous.

I love it but learned as a child and now prefer boarding which I started after being on skis for years. I don’t think I would have the confidence or perseverance as an adult beginner. So much respect to you op

Having said all that- it is so much fun when you can do it. Someone said it’s like flying and dancing. I would agree with that. I feel like a superhero flying down the mountain. I love it.

Sunriseyes · 23/02/2023 23:01

I grow up an hour drive from mountains and skiing was always must. I don't like it also I hate to be up high I have fear of heights and when is windy and snowing I'm panicking. Plus lots of people a specially fast ones Last time when I went I stayed on small hill and was skiing with beginners and kids. I personally don't like mountains maybe because all trips were always to mountains, climbing mountains and skiing etc. No from me rather go to the beach. I'm a water and sun person. I find in UK skiing is seen as expensive and more for middle class people but I don't understand why.

flutterbyebaby · 23/02/2023 23:06

I went with the school way back yonder, give me a sunny beach over it any day of the week

mdinbc · 23/02/2023 23:28

Love it, but I have only skied on two small local mountains, and have not experienced a 'ski holiday'. I am a forever intermediate skier, with the knowledge I won't improve much. You need to go quite often to get better. Having said that, stopping at the top of the run, looking at the tremendous view, and having very quiet runs is almost a religious experience!

I just went on Monday with the family (adult kids and 2 grandchildren). I did one last run on my own, and not one other person was on the run with me the whole way down! Then I sat and had a fortified hot chocolate until the rest of the family came down the slope. Actually, skiing a half-day is really good enough for me.

This is in northern BC Canada. We have no ski village... just the one chalet that is definitely not fancy. One son brought a portable bbq, so hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch, another son brought a firepit with cut wood. We parked both behind the vehicles in the carpark and had lunch there.

I think for my money, I would rather have a tropical week away in the winter. We are lucky because we can go for a single day, but I'm not sure I would want to ski for 5 days in a row.

AllWorkYoPlait · 23/02/2023 23:30

I know I wouldn't enjoy it so no, I've never been.

I agree

I went once, to Valmeinier in France. The place was absolutely beautiful but I hated the skiing.

After falling backwards and whacking my head on my 3rd day there, I took my skis off, walked down the slopes in my ski boots, and stayed in the hotel for the rest of the break.

I value my life too much for that shit!

Scottishskifun · 24/02/2023 05:00

It can be tough especially when beginning. Have a afternoon off and have a wonder. There are some amazing spas in Soldeu depending on where your staying book yourself in for some pamper!
Or go tax free shopping!

I love it but it is hard as a beginner and takes more then 1 holiday for it to click. I now also book somewhere with hot tubs so I can chill out in the afternoon if I want!

Dzogchen · 24/02/2023 06:27

It bores me rigid. I let DS and DH go without me.

WandaWonder · 24/02/2023 06:39

I have not been actual skiing but to a ski resort out of season

I get others love it but I have no desire too and I can't think why I would actually go on a ski holiday
