Packing for a ski trip

CruCru · 08/02/2017 12:28

I am packing for a ski trip to France next week and wondered whether any of you keep a list of gear so you don't forget anything. If you do, please could you share it?

I have a three and a five year old. I've packed for them first.

Thanks!

My packing essential snow or shine with children is threadworm tablets- we’ve had the itchy bum at midnight scenario more than once on holiday. Also a tube of metacam to reduce the itching while waiting fir the tablets to do their thing

RhubarbFairy · 16/11/2021 07:18

To be fair, I take my straighteners, but only mini ones that I use exclusively for my fringe otherwise it sticks out in multiple directions. Why wouldn't you take cards? They're so portable. DH and I play cards most days, so they're close to the top of our list and we'll have a pack in one of our jackets to play when we stop for a drink too.

Just said I'd bump this up for those packing😊

BeepBoopBop · 02/02/2022 11:10

@WelshMoth

Tempted by the hip flask...

What to put in it though....

Jack Daniels Tenessee Fire. Just a sip though!
BeepBoopBop · 02/02/2022 11:21

Also earplugs.
Buffs will double as face coverings as all lifts require face coverings when queuing and in the gondolas.
Headtorches (I live in an unlit area)
FatMap on your phone.
Your phone numbers on laminated paper to put in kids pockets - separation does happen.
Visit to lidl to get miniature chocolate bars for energy boost.
Rucksacks
Flask for soup. Much cheaper than restaurants everyday and there is always a Salle Hors Sac or picnic room to sit and eat.
Spare ski gloves - always lots in the snow under the lift and skiing down without one is crippling.
Long piece of ribbon to hang the door key on round your neck or easy access in rucksack.
Revolut card for better exchange rate
Battery pack to charge flat phone
Put emergency number for Pisteurs on your phone

If you have time before you go, print out your covid pass and either stick it on your helmet under wide sellotape or make a label on string. Much easier than taking your gloves off and digging your phone out in the lift queue.

TrickyD · 04/02/2022 10:47

Disposable hand warmers, cheap on Amazon

Hip flask for swigs of Drambuie on the chairlifts.

Sleepyteach · 04/02/2022 16:24

Spare scarf/neck warmer, I was so bloody cross the year I had to go and spend a small fortune on a new one after I left mine in a restaurant in a tiny Austrian town that only had crazy expensive shops!! And goggles, I woke up in the middle of the night the other day and realised I’d missed them off my packing list!!

CruCru · 09/02/2022 21:54

Hurrah, here’s my old thread!

Well, we had a wonderful time and I've now done masses of washing. So good to be able to go back

Ah, here’s the thread! We got the kids to try on their old stuff at the weekend so we’ve got time to order some new before half term.

Marking spot!

Iamatissuebox · 15/01/2023 03:22

A question on coats - do you take another winter coat as well as ski jacket for evenings etc? And what do you do with said massive coat(s) re. packing? Or do you wear it at the airport then have to lug it round the whole time because it’s too hot?

Sunsetintheeast · 15/01/2023 09:48

I only take a ski jacket and yes lug it to the airport.

frillseeking · 15/01/2023 10:27

@Iamatissuebox I usually wear my ski jacket to the airport as it's so heavy and takes up too much space otherwise. Last year we went later in the season when it was quite mild so I took a lightweight puffer to wear with jeans for a walk around town or to wear with leather leggings if I wanted to dress up slightly as it was super light and took up no space in my case once squashed down!

RhubarbFairy · 15/01/2023 10:28

Yep, take it to the airport. We only take hand luggage, so it's no big deal to just hang it on the handle of my case as I wheel it round (I have a 4 wheeled one, so mine stays upright).

Alternatively, if you have a bigger case and check it, shove it in your case just before you check it in and just have a hoody or the like for the airport. You can then fish the coat back out at the other end.

RhubarbFairy · 15/01/2023 10:38

You won't need two coats. But you may want an alternative pair of shoes depending on your accommodation.

At Christmas, we stayed in an aparthotel complex, so everything was onsite with no need to go outside.

I'd only taken my winter boots and my slippers with me, so I ended up wearing my slippers to the spa/bar/pool, etc, as my boots were too warm and big to want to wear inside. I wish I'd had some flip-flops or even my Converse with me. DH said the same. He'd rather have had his trainers. DS1 was the only one who had both trainers and snow boots as he'd insisted on travelling in trainers. DS2 wore his slippers all week. Our winter shoes were great when we walked into the town for shopping or dinner, but back at the hotel, definitely not.

The previous time we'd skied, we'd stayed in apartments in individual blocks where we had to go outside to access anything, so I packed with that in mind.

You learn something new every time. Have to say, I'm looking forward to driving next time so I can just chuck things like spare shoes in the car.

skilikeagirl · 15/01/2023 11:58

I usually take an extra jacket as I eat out a lot and jackets tend to pick up a cheesy reek (in Fr or Sw especially). Heavier coat in Jan/Feb and lightweight after. I am not a fan of travelling in my ski jacket. I like to keep it clean as possible as they are never the same waterproof wise once washed!

frillseeking · 15/01/2023 13:22

@RhubarbFairy that's a really good point. I normally take trainers but I think I might take my slip on Uggs this year

Iamatissuebox · 15/01/2023 13:32

Thanks everyone re the jacket - I’m torn on this one and not very good at travelling light! 🙈 maybe I will pack the ski jacket with a vacc-pack, then wear a gilet to travel…

Iamatissuebox · 15/01/2023 13:33

Good shout @RhubarbFairy , I will pack slippers and flip flops

poshme · 15/01/2023 19:41

My top tip- the ski lockers are never big enough, and it's a struggle to fit everything in.
Last year we took one of those hooks that hangs on a door- used on the top of the ski locker it's a place to hang boots (if not too wet) or poles...

And a big ikea bag to carry snow boots once you've got ski boots on. (Or vice Verda at the end of the week)

skilikeagirl · 16/01/2023 11:21

Sorry I've got to ask - once you have your ski boots on why are you carrying your snow boots anywhere? Don't you leave them where you put your ski boots on, and go skiing?

This thread has shown me everyone has their own way of doing things I guess! Am puzzled at some tips and I guess some people would feel the same at mine

I always travel in a pair of sturdy (waterproof type) trainers. I pack snow boots away myself in the ski boot bag for flying as I find them boiling to travel in. Sometimes in April I dispense with the boots completely but you can be caught out with that approach!

Iamblossom · 24/01/2023 21:59

I never used to travel in my ski jacket but I quite like my lightweight blue slim line puffa one so I will this year. I might also pack a crushable black lightweight puffa like a PP , I do like a bit of variety.

DH wears caterpillar type boots to travel in and will have them for in resort. He wears crocs from bedroom to boot room as refuses to leave expensive boots in a boot room all day.. DSes will have similar boots but will also take a pair of trainers. I will travel in UGGs and have converse for in hotel and a pair of ankle boots for in resort.

I will be taking less clothes this year... Will travel in trackies, and pack 2 pairs of jeans and 3 jumpers and tops to go under. Although head turned by PP suggestion of pleathers.... 🤦🏼‍♀️
