Phew - apparently it's started snowing at last.
I'm determined to meet a MN-er on a ski holiday, so please sign in.....

Us - Plan-Peisey in March with Esprit....

oh would love to go on a skiing holiday.

Bloody toddlers.

I have stayed a couple of days at Richard (before a week at Tournier). The minibus on call is apparently very reliable. In addition, the bubble from Le Raffort up into Meribel is only about 500m away. As we were only there for a couple of nights, we never needed to make use of them - plus we'd arrived by car anyway.

Tournier (if there is any room there) is only a few 100m from the slope and you can then ski on down into the Chaudanne.

Give the people on my link a call and see if you can get space there. Food was very good when we stayed there.

Like you, Magic in Motion is an essential part of the holiday. How old is your dd1?

Ds was 5 last year and therefore still in the tinies class, so we had to combine it with the ESF creche (used to be called Jardin de P'tits Loups, now called Club Piou Piou) ie he had a two hour class in the monring, then we would attempt to ski with him for a wee bit and then have some lunch, before putting him in to the Club Piou Piou for the afternoon. They take kids from 3 -5, and also give them the basics in ski instruction (and for the older, more confident kids, even take them out on the slopes). We used the one at Rond Point, which seemd nicer than the one at the Chaudanne - although the Chaudanne one also includes the nursery for the 18month - 3 year olds.

This year he'll be 6 and so can go in the "ordnary" kids lessons with Magic in Motion, so gets 4 hours in the morning and then two full days - which will be great for us, as we don't mind skiing with him for four afternoons if we can get a decent ski in the monring and then two whole days where we can get a bit further. We'll also have the first Satruday to help him get his ski legs back and then the last Saturday to show us what he can now do! (We've managed to squeeze in 8 days skiing!)

If you need a nanny service or extra pick-ups, kidsetc is an option to look into.

Voice of Doom, we're going to the Alps on the train, that's got to be the best way to get there.

prettybird · 11/01/2007 12:44

We're flying to Paris from Glasgow and then getting the train. Unfortunately, the government reneged on its commitment to integrate the Eurostar with the rest of the UK, so the only people who really benefit from it are those base in the South East

pretty bird thankyou for all the advice - this is turning into my private ski advice thread , my dd1 will be 7 and can do basics so will go to Magics proper lessons - she is really excited and so am i , last yeay instruction was abit hit and miss and far too much luggin stuff and kids on buses , this year we are going just us three so hope to do some skiing wiht her a little bit in the afternoon - no doubt by the end of the week we too will be struggling to keep up ! she is quite a sporty girl and can out surf my DH already ! hope you have fun with DS , i would love to hear how your week goes and how your ds gets on with the longer days at magic in motion...post when you get back

St Anton with Esprit in two weeks! Booked yesterday! I won't be skiing as am 24 weeks pregnant but looking forward to a rest and practising very rusty German!

sauce · 13/01/2007 16:12

weather v. warm. any snow below 2000m gone!

toomanyprojects · 13/01/2007 17:01

where is that sauce? The forecast reckons temp is dropping with more snow forecast.

sauce · 13/01/2007 17:08

We are between Geneva & Lausanne & natives & visitors gnashing their teeth because there is simply no snow! Local schools have cancelled their ski weekends for the rest of the month. What fell about a week ago has since melted. Fabulous weather, though. Blue skies & 15°C at 600m.

mummydoc · 15/01/2007 11:22

that is interesting sauce - we are planning to go 2nd week in march but i reckon the season is changing to later and later each year, seriously considering waiting till april when prices drop dramatically and going with someone fabulus ( thinking scott dunn or powder byrne ...) but not sure and brave enough to make that descision..... keep us posted on the weather...

LIZS · 15/01/2007 11:29

Friend near Zurich are saying the regular weekend ski lessons at a local resort are likely to be cancelled.

sauce · 15/01/2007 12:00

Sad, isn't it? Global warming? Or is winter late this year?

Nip · 21/01/2007 07:48

Just to update on the snow. We came back from Les Arcs 1800 had 4 glorious days, snow was extremely good. Rained on the 5th day but snow at top.
6th day was also very good although there was a lack of snow at about 1900 and below (although skiable)
Aparently Tuesday it will begin snowing, temps will drop to -20 and will snow all week.

kitegirl · 23/01/2007 19:35

that's great to hear Nip - we are flying down for a long weekend in a couple of weeks.

sounds like this season is going to be patchy and it's down to luck whether you get any snow! We were in Verbier second weekend of December and it dumped down, two feet of fresh snow! Don't know if it has snowed since though. Global warming! Back home in Finland it only now started snowing, all the southern ski slopes are in big trouble as haven't been able to open.

lapsedrunner · 23/01/2007 19:56

Managed to go sledging today (1st time this winter) just outside Vienna ....last 3 years we have had deep snow at this time of year

sauce · 24/01/2007 21:28

tons & tons of SNOW!!! get your skis on, kids, this is it. Had about 15cm last night down here (600m). Very low temps, even during the day so...
