Getting a bit worried, we are going to Les Gets for new year, huge group of us in one chalet. What if there is no snow at all???

Does anyone have any decent intel on what is predicted/forecast for the next few weeks???

We were in La Rosiere from 20th to 27th. It did not snow at all during this time and temperatures were up to 14 degrees! By the end of the week there was no snow left in resort. It was too warm to make snow. But good skiing up top, and we skied over into Italy. We still had a fantastic time, and we booked just 3 weeks before we went, saving 40%. We will try to go next year too, and will wait until the last minute. With two Christmases of very little snow I hope there will be another bargain to be had. We went with Esprit.

It all looks very depressing; however, let's hope that the forecasts for this weekend bear out. 16cms for Vars (we're headed there mid-Feb), which is a start at least. They seem to be quite good at maintaining what snow they've got once it's actually fallen, so fingers crossed.

Wonder if there's going to be another hassle with Saturday's transfers, as last year. If I recall correctly, there were loads of weekends last season where there was a dump of snow on transfer day. We nearly got stuck coming down the mountain. Had to put chains on for the first time in 10 years.

It may not be so bad this year Clam - last year was 27th, so loads of peeps heading uphill (some of them poorly equipped) for NY as well as down... Since the NY rush is now over, less likelihood of that.
Usually go for NY - this year decide to leave till mid Jan in hope of better snow - now am thinking will leave till end Feb.

Radiatorvalves · 31/12/2015 16:20

Clam - never seen it like this. There is no link to Risoul at the moment, and no skiing in the bowl at the back. It looks quite snowy up towards the Col de Crevoux, but the lifts aren't working and the runs are shut. Giving it another go tomorrow.... On the plus side you can ski down to vars St Marie. There is no natural snow at all. Nothing between pistes, even up high.

We are back later in the season and have friends coming early February. Am hoping it snows, and keeping an eye on forecast as don't want to get stuck on the way home!

clam · 31/12/2015 16:54

Interesting that all the forecasts earlier in the Autumn were for the coldest winter since 1962 or 1947, due to El Nino. Seems it's gone right the other way.
Wonder when it was last as bad as this, snow-wise. At least we have snow cannons now, unlike 30 years ago, when I first went.

MrsUltra · 31/12/2015 17:18

When I went 30 years ago there was no real weather forecasting either Grin you just turned up at a place...

fredabear · 31/12/2015 17:21

Skiing in courchevel/la tania has been ok this week, they've done a great job of spreading round the little snow they have to keep some pistes open. Snow forecast for the weekend/next week - when we're back home Xmas Sad

Pupsiecola · 31/12/2015 18:05

It's been too mild to use snow cannons in most places though :-(

allegretto · 31/12/2015 18:25

We are going to the mountains this weekend in Italy and apparently there is snow which is great as I hate skiing and am looking forward to not slipping over Grin

namechangedtoday15 · 31/12/2015 18:48

We have just come back from Cervinia. A few runs weren't open but more than enough were, especially when you factor all the runs you have access to on the other side of the mountain (on the Swiss side).

We purposely picked Cervinia as it's so high - the snow canons have done a great job lower down. Had a brill time - the pistes were empty, never had to queue for a lift. Loved, loved, loved it!

MrsUltra · 31/12/2015 18:57

Just looked at the Meribel webcams - dire - have never seen so much bare earth there Sad

namelessposter · 31/12/2015 20:22

Fear not -we're here in Meribel this week and the snow cannons are working hard so there loads of runs open. We've had a great week, plus, snow forecast tonight!

drspouse · 31/12/2015 22:48

Fingers crossed very hard that the forecast for St Anton is correct!

MrsUltra · 01/01/2016 08:20

Meribel webcam

MrsUltra · 01/01/2016 08:22

Link did not work - the webcam showing the 'Chaudanne' is the bottom one - worth looking at that at 4.30-ish to see how many returning skiers are crammed onto a narrow stretch of snow.

mary21 · 01/01/2016 15:05

Spent Xmas week in Espace killy (VAL d'isere/tignes) good snow cover. Most runs open. Able to ski down to Brevier and la Daille . Snow better than same time last year. By the end on the week it was getting a bit icy on the lower slopes but as they should be having snow now it should be great there. For those that know the area Santons was shut so to go from Tignes to VAL d you either needed to do Face(black) or take the cable car down. Not to crowded for Xmas either.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/01/2016 21:17

Is anyone in the Portes Du Soleil at the moment?

We're heading out on 16th Jan so I'm hoping that the forecast for lots of snow starting this week are accurate.

ratherworriednow · 01/01/2016 21:27

I am in the Portes du Soleil area now. It's grim - very little snow, lots of disconsolate tourists in ski jackets wandering around. The forecast snow hasn't yet arrived.

namelessposter · 02/01/2016 06:10

UPDATE it is snowing in Meribel right now (as we pack the car to leave Hmm)

clam · 02/01/2016 10:48

It's snowing everywhere!!!!! Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Lots ofrecast for this coming week, too.
Yay!!!

clam · 02/01/2016 11:14

I've got the resort webcam on my Favourites bar. Is it very sad to keep visiting it and watching the bare earth turn a lovely white? Xmas Grin

trixymalixy · 02/01/2016 11:16

We're off to Morillon in early Feb. We usually go higher up and are totally kicking ourselves. Will be doing a snow dance for a month!!

ChinaSorrows · 02/01/2016 11:41

I'm going to sestriere in the morning.

It has JUST started snowing thank fuck

Iamblossom · 03/01/2016 08:01

We are travelling back from Les Gets now. We skies everyday but mainly in Avoriaz, thank god for Avoriaz. Only a few runs open in Les gets all week and by Thursday it was terrible there. Avoriaz ok but never seen so much green and brown in a ski resort.

It started dumping down on Friday night in Avoriaz although it stayed as rain until Saturday lunchtime in Les gets....but snow seems to be everywhere now....
