Any chance MN HQ could ban posters who consistently speculate regarding trolls...

It's getting really boring when a number of posters repeatedly keep dissecting threads and questioning how genuine the OP is, often leaving a lot of ill feeling in their wake. Seen a lot of it around lately - it is becoming an epidemic!

The MN policy on trolls says:
"we would rather Mumsnet erred on the side of giving folks the benefit of the doubt and risked being made to look a bit foolish than pounce on someone who turns out to be genuinely in need of help. We hope you agree"

So perhaps MN HQ would consider banishing the repeat offenders to some poisonous cesspit of malice? They wouldn't be missed.

i feel as though i should lob a biscuit at you

hmc · 12/06/2010 23:46

I feel I should crap on your sofa

Ronaldinhio · 12/06/2010 23:48

wish you wouldn't

I haven't seen any troll escapades or hunting of late except for some ranting about a bloke posting fairly openly
has it been mental?

hmc · 12/06/2010 23:48

Stop - you'll get fatter!

OP posts:
Ronaldinhio · 12/06/2010 23:49

anyway more to the point is it a sign of a troll if there is poo on your sofa?

dd2 pooed on the sofa and I never shouted troll at her
or reported her

hmc · 12/06/2010 23:50

I've seen a couple - a poster who got accused of fabricating a story about her dh's car being set on fire by a bunny boiler (she posted a photo of the car after being accused of being a fake, which rather validated her), and a rather unpleasant thread on active conversations atm

OP posts:
hmc · 12/06/2010 23:51

Don't worry about my sofa, I have nooooooo idea where that came from!

OP posts:
Ronaldinhio · 13/06/2010 00:00

oh i see
I've just had a look at the thread

the advice i, red-facedly, took on board was even if the troll is doing it for sport the advice given might help someone else in a somewhat similar situation
maybe mn needs to remind us of that

hmc · 13/06/2010 00:02

It needs some sort of underlining from MN, seems to be getting a bit out of hand

OP posts:
scaredoflove · 13/06/2010 00:03

the prolific troll shouters are people who found one once - they now think they are chief troll spotters - pisses me off immensely

hmc · 13/06/2010 00:06

Oh I know - very annoying. So why doesn't MN HQ have a word? It's pissing a lot of people off...

OP posts:
Ronaldinhio · 13/06/2010 00:07

did you mention it on the thread in question?

i didn't read it all tbh

GypsyMoth · 13/06/2010 00:08

which threa is it? i have so many hidden today

Chandra · 13/06/2010 00:11

Agree with you hmc. I was thinking the same the other day, any contentious out of the ordinary issue and there is someone shouting troll.

I feel more offended by the person shouting troll than by the attitude and problems of the suspected troll.

hmc · 13/06/2010 00:14

ILoveT - the thread about the abuse someone encountered on the bus for breastfeeding. Apparently it just doesn't ring true . Needless speculation - and to what end?

OP posts:
hmc · 13/06/2010 00:15

Me too Chandra

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 13/06/2010 00:18

oh yes,saw the beginning of that....hid it.....regular poster too.

thumbwitch · 13/06/2010 00:23

Bloody annoying, isn't it. The bunnyboiler thread, the poor op was even accused of lifting the photo from Google!

As for the BFing on a bus one, it isn't remotely unbelievable that one person could be attacked more than once. Stupid response. One Doubting Thomas at least in common with the other thread, too - probably more, I only really recognised one.

ArseHolio · 13/06/2010 00:26

I agree hmc.

The troll hunting is much more tedious than the actual trolling.

AnyFuleKno · 13/06/2010 00:42

It's not that simple hmc! Often people are pointing out potential trolls for a reason - we've all seen several actual trolls on here gradually unfold fictional and very upsetting stories. Other posters who have been through something similar invest loads of emotional support, sometimes even speak to or meet up with these people in real life. Then it later transpires that the person was making the whole thing up. I'm not saying it's great that people posting their real problems get accused of being a troll, but I think sometimes people need to be reminded that they shouldn't take everything that's said on here at face value before they put themselves in a very vulnerable position.

AnyFuleKno · 13/06/2010 00:43

Personally I've seen a few posters on here recently who I am certain are trolls, but I think, fuck it, if I say so I'll only get a load of abuse.

Chandra · 13/06/2010 00:44

There was a woman the other day asking about the so used dilemma of choosing between career and children. She was also accused of trolling.

It seems that for some posters, the fact that the OP opinion is completely different from them, is enough t shout troll.

thumbwitch · 13/06/2010 00:54

Anyfulekno - have you reported your concerns about them to MNHQ though? Isn't that what we're supposed to do if we think something is off-key?

scaredoflove · 13/06/2010 00:55

anyfulekno - the troll shouts don't tend to come to threads that are sensitive - they come on the unusual ones

The BF one tonight doesn't bring out people disclosing distressing stories or emotional support - just brings out people wanting one up manship and look at me, I'm so clever. Most of the troll shouters do it on an unusual story or one from someone with a name they don't know

It's nasty, all they want is to belittle the op

If you think it doesn't ring true, don't comment and walk away, you don't have to go on a thread and be nasty or shout troll. Report it if you have to but just ignore it
