For te past few days I've had a hard time using mumsnet on aol

It won't load any threads - or the list of topics. Nor will it let me post, a few carefully crafted comments have just vanished into the ether

I can access mn via internet explorer so it's clearly an aol problem. Tech, if you have any words of wisdowm I'd be very grateful

I too 'lost'the ability to post or log in to MN on AOL.

I could read threads tho and now am accessing via IE and am now showing as 'logged in' but still can't post when on AOL.

Geraldine told me tech is working on it RW&B.

redwhiteandblue · 14/04/2010 14:35

Thanks Parasol

Tech, please let us know when it's fixed

MoneyNoPockets · 14/04/2010 15:23

Still won't let me post via AOL.

IE 'slow'

Linnet · 14/04/2010 15:39

I was about to post that I've never had any problems posting with AOL then realised that I don't actually use AOL software since for some inexplicable reason I can't download it onto my laptop, I'm the only person in the entire world it appears who has this problem according to AOL and my own research, but I digress I access everything through Internet explorer.

MoneyNoPockets · 14/04/2010 16:13

i have AOL on my laptop and update/reload it when it misbehaves.

redwhiteandblue · 14/04/2010 20:31

redwhiteandblue · 16/04/2010 12:49

Tech. Sorry to shout but ARE YOU LISTENING?

OP posts:
Monty100 · 16/04/2010 13:33

I've been having this since last Saturday. Grrr

EpsonPrinter · 16/04/2010 17:28

same here. My issues started when i downloaded aol 9.1 - is this when yours started? I could not log in. and now i cannot post although i can log in.

so am accessing it via Internet explorer at the moment. but this is beginning to be a real pain.

Monty100 · 16/04/2010 18:45

Epson, yes I think I did the same. IE is so sloooooowwwwww. I've almost posted twice a couple of times.

MoneyNoPockets · 16/04/2010 19:36

I have 9.5 and have had it for months, now today i can't post via AOL, the problem is that running both AOL & IE for MN is upping my core temps

WebDude · 16/04/2010 19:37

Might be worth trying Firefox instead - see www.getfirefox.com

Never know, you might like it !

MoneyNoPockets · 16/04/2010 19:39

Firefox in place of IE Webdude?

WickedWitchSouthWest · 16/04/2010 19:43

Sorry to crash but Firefox is far superior to IE (and you can customise it and make it all pretty). I've had no issues with speed and my replies disappearing since converting...

Monty100 · 16/04/2010 19:59

Wicked - thanks! I forgot about that. I actually had a shortcut to mumsnet through firefox on my desktop, have come in via that and you are sooooo right!

sammac · 16/04/2010 20:56

Adding my name to others here unable to do anything other than read active posts through aol. Can't log in, can't search etc.

Thank you for the directions to firefox- I now have a lovely sparkly page which my dd is loving!!

ellasmum1 · 16/04/2010 20:58

huh,you mean you aren't using google chrome! Its fab espec for netbooks!

MerlinsBeard · 16/04/2010 21:00

Linnet - when i had AOL i couldn't download the software either. It didn't matter though as i used firefox.

Seriously all you IE users - go and download firefox. Tis muuuuuch better!

WebDude · 16/04/2010 21:15

Firefox, Opera (yes, even Google Chrome)... all are worth using, all have various pros and cons.

Things I like:

Firefox can bookmark a load of tabs in one folder, in one go (and later, re-open all of them in one go).

Firefox has hundreds of add-ons that can assist in different tasks, blocking adverts, examining web sites, etc.

Firefox can also display a page using the Internet Explorer display engine, via some add-on, in case something gives errors on Firefox.

Opera can synchronize notes and bookmarks so if you have your own PCs in different places (office, laptop, desktop at home) any bookmark you add can be seen on the other PCs too. Also notes (text) made via one machine will be visible on the others too.

Opera has a 'speed dial' feature (copied via an add-on for Firefox) that allows you to have up to 25 favourite sites on a grid (3x3 up to 5x5 depending on how big your screen is). A thumbnail image is shown for each site so you can quickly spot the one you want (eg bank, BBC, Five on Demand, etc)

Chrome allows you to pull tabs from one window to another (or to create a new separate window).

I still use Netscape v7.2 (Firefox is based on some of the code from Netscape). I started using Netscape in the mid-90s and still have some floppy disks from my first (US) ISP with Netscape 1.1 (for Windows 95 I think, or Windows 3.11)

MoneyNoPockets · 16/04/2010 21:16

downloaded Firefox tho really want AOL to work, have done a remove and am reinstalling a new downloaded copy so fingers crossed.

WebDude · 16/04/2010 21:27

There have almost always been some sites where AOL browser won't work properly. Some sites even have special notes for AOL users (mostly suggesting they use another browser).

It's perhaps worth checking any AOL-specific discussion areas for whether others are having problems with latest release. Closest I've come to it is helping an ex-neighbour (when his line was upgraded to 2 Mbps and his USB modem would not work, first AOL said he must contact Microsoft, and then AOL said he must contact his PC manufacturer, and washed their hands of his problems. I lent him a router and he was back online in 10 minutes.

Have always been cautious about any ISP which forces you to install their software. Most of them (eg Tesco) just add bookmarks and brand the browser to promote their own name but AOL went so much further with their own software, leaving it more awkward for any support to be given independently.
