Can we have to option to ignore certain posters?

I belong to another forum where there is an option to filter out posts by particular posters. I'd LOVE it if there was that option here because whilst I find most posts interesting and/amusing, there are a very small handful of posters whose posts consistently annoy or offend me. I usually just skim over what they have to say and try and ignore, but sometimes I find myself unnecessarily irritated, and causes me to stop following the thread.

Also, this option might also tone down some of the vitriol on some controversial threads.

Just an idea, but would be welcome.

There are few posters I know I will never agree with and I know full well that I annoy a few people.

My solution is not to reply to people I consistently disagree with and it avoids conflict. Everyone is happier.

Blocking posters would just make threads very disjointed.

thumbwitch · 28/11/2009 14:58

I agree that if you had that option, you would do as Bucharest and BoF said and end up itching to know what they had said so it would all be pretty pointless.

There are some posters who I rarely agree with, but recently I found myself in complete sympathy with one of them (much to my surprise, I have to say) and nearly commented in the thread to that effect, except I realised that it would have been very wrong to do so! . If I had blocked that person I would never have known that there was a common ground with them after all.

Mostly if I see a poster with whom I generally have no agreement, I skim over it, or take a quick read as confirmation that they are still barking wrong different from me and move on.

IMO, blocking people you don't like is like living in la la land - "I don't like what you say, I'm going to pretend you don't exist so I don't have to see it and have my own thoughts challenged in a way that makes me uncomfortable".

scottishmummy · 28/11/2009 15:00

how can you keep track of who you disagree with?can never reecall who said what to whom. recall gist of the thread but not the
he said/i said names

thumbwitch · 28/11/2009 15:01

sm, just because you can't do it, doesn't mean others can't. I have a good memory for most names, that's how.

southeastastra · 28/11/2009 15:02

i agree with scottish mummy and now unclench is my new favourite word

scottishmummy · 28/11/2009 15:04

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 28/11/2009 15:09

Just cause the facility's there wouldn't mean you had to use it, if you don't like it.

I've never hidden a thread, but I have no problem with the fact that you can do it.

ImSoNotTelling · 28/11/2009 15:09

what's a bampot?

thumbwitch · 28/11/2009 15:10

neither is it just internet gremlins, sm - there are real people behind the names. (Well, most of them anyway.) I don't go out of my way to remember them, it just happens.

DippyFarquhar · 28/11/2009 15:13

You can ignore me if you like, Ronaldinhio. I'm invisible anyway. I didn't say I disliked certain posters but certain posting styles mildly irritate me. No big deal.

I use smilies too but I don't like seeing them loads of them per post. That doesn't happen on here anyway.

Wow, I'm fucking cheerful today. As if anyone bloody cares what I find pleasing to read

scottishmummy · 28/11/2009 15:14

bampot a raver,heid the baw,dft person

shockers · 28/11/2009 15:23

I've disagreed with someone to the point of shaking with fury on one thread but I might not on different subject...

scottishmummy · 28/11/2009 15:25

well there is the rub can be on concurrent threads agree on one differ on other.actually it is the riposte and relatively unedited content that keeps mn interesting

Ronaldinhio · 28/11/2009 15:29

don't be daft dippy

ImSoNotTelling · 28/11/2009 15:29

Aha. You learn something every day!

2shoes · 28/11/2009 18:57

how many people now worry they might be one of those people?

MollieO · 28/11/2009 19:24

Whilst we're at it could we impose a lifetime ban on posters who use text speak (txt spk)? Surely that has more practical use to those of us who are over 25 [ageist assumption that those under 25 do understand txt spk].

smallorange · 28/11/2009 19:26

Bampot

FabIsVeryLucky · 28/11/2009 19:28

Oh dear.

So if someone annoys you you can't enjoy the thread?

Maybe it is time to take a break.

ImSoNotTelling · 28/11/2009 19:42

All I can say is that people I have rowed with so violently that I have ended up floucing and de-regging, have later been enormously helpful and supportive. People I have had mega slanging matches with I will later find the lone voice of reason on a different thread.

Learn which topics get you going and avoid them.

If you are getting really wound up by enough individuals across a range of subjects to feel that you need this facility, it may be that this site is not right for you.

Peachy · 28/11/2009 19:52

This one comes up as a loop
Andevery time the answer is most people think no

Its rude, bullying even, and its true thgreads would make no sense

I dont get this 'other sites have...' thing; thats why theres a choice, after all- to suit all types.

FabIsVeryLucky · 28/11/2009 20:11

And who wants all the sites to be the same?

2shoes · 28/11/2009 21:55

I once asked this
I regeretted it as it hurt someone
so I think it is a bad idea,
you ignore and then make up
easy

SofaQueen · 28/11/2009 21:55

Sorry, been away cooking/serving/eating/cleaning up dinner for 15.

I am surprised by the reaction (some, typically, ). I am certainly not a flouncer, am relatively laid back, and have no problem with most posters - just the very few which consistently irritate me. I DO, in general, just ignore and guess I'll just continue to do so.

Good points from some of you. Still doesn't take away my wish to have an ignore button from some posters whose comments are consistently just snarky, and rude.
