The MN Mail Column - what we think, and what we plan to do next... part 2

whataboutthisone · 18/08/2009 12:56

Firstly, I am a regular but have created a new name for this.

My thoughts about what I know so far:

  1. In a much earlier post there was a discussion about a change in T&Cs and whether they are valid or not. Several years ago I took a company to court for a breach of their T&Cs. Their argument was that they had changed T&Cs and my complaint was therefore no longer valid. However, the judge said that because I had not specifically been asked to accept the new T&Cs, I was entitled to rely on the ones I had accepted and therefore I won my case.
  1. I choose to post on MN in the knowledge that the details I give are probably just obscure enough to anyone I may know in RL who also posts, so that what I say still effectively remains private. However, that doesn't mean that the same could be said of, for instance, my mother, who reads the DM (!) There is probably just enough about my circumstances that would enable her to put 2+2 together. I would like the option to choose whether or not I let my Mum ( or anyone else in RL) in on certain areas of my life, and there is a real possibility that this hack, has taken that choice away from me.
  1. I have never ( and now will never) post asking for advice, but I will also be very careful about offering advice in the future. I, along with many others, occasionally use examples from my life to explain where I am coming from. If I continue to do that, as I said earlier, it is possible that some people would be able to work out who I am. Now, I am not so big-headed as to believe that any advice I offer is worth taking, however, there are many fantastic posters on here who do give amazing and insightful advice based on their own experiences. It would be a real shame if that was to stop because they, like me, do not want to share some of those experiences with the folk they are close to in RL. It would also be a real tragedy if others were prevented from asking for help for the same reasons.

I am very disappointed that any MNer would feel it is acceptable to violate the trust we place in each other on this forum. I do not know who she is. I do not want to know who she is. But I hope she is hanging her head in shame for breaching the trust that has been placed in her by everyone whose words she has stolen to make a few bucks!

LadyHooHa - Well you might not be interesting but I most definitely am fascinating.

Fennel · 19/08/2009 19:24

It depends where you're coming from, whether it seems right or left wing on here. For some of us lefties mumsnet seems oddly right wing 1950s wife-and-ideal-home-ly. Quite Daily Mailish.

daftpunk · 19/08/2009 19:25

king, no i'm not joking...the vast majority of posters on here are very left-wing...i don't have a problem with that, have been a labour voter all my life....but i'm changing.

MD; are MNHQ forming a political party.?
is that why they're getting in with newspaper editors..?

i'm sorry, but as far as i'm concerned MNHQ can have a column with any paper they like.....they don't have to ask us lot for the go ahead.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:31

Ladyhooha, I am pretty sure we responded to that point the last time you made it.

madameDefarge · 19/08/2009 19:31

Daft, Hm, I still think its liberal (small l, non-politcal liberal) ethos gives everyone a fair crack of the whip. But all communities have general tendencies, and MN is no different. But there is also the freedom for all the say their bit.

now there's thought The Independent Mumsnet Party...what could be the key policy points?

And yes, of course they can form alliances with anybody they like. Its their business, after all. But it is not unreasonable for people to feel very unhappy about it..for all the reasons previously stated. And I am sticking the the neutral position as being the most desirable for them.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:35

Daftpunk, tbh I have not found a persons politics to be an issue on these boards - it is rare to get a "you vote what?" thread. Where a persons politics instruct or affect their views on other areas of life than it may come into a discussion but it is up to you wether you reveal it or not isn't it? I certainly have no intention of discussing who I vote for!

Nancy66 · 19/08/2009 19:36

300 words once a week on sandwich fillings and fake tan - not exactly the gang of four is it?

Therevchasesducks · 19/08/2009 19:36

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo no they are not, check out the news topic, loads of links to the DM, always followed by a sorry.

no I am not Therev(wonder where she is)

madameDefarge · 19/08/2009 19:39

well Nancy, being the DM it is indeed unlikely to be the gang of four

lol MD....

king....you obviously haven't been on alot of threads i'm on.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:43

Rev, TBH your argument is a bit of a non-starter, I also do not wish to appear in vouge, heat or the watchtower but that does not preclude me from reading any of them.

FuriousofTunbridgeWells aggree with the second part of your post,

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:45

Fair enough DP - maybe that is why I have not found a problem with it

Therevchasesducks · 19/08/2009 19:45

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo so then this isn@t the DM, but about having more controll of what appears(if it has to) in the press?

daftpunk · 19/08/2009 19:46

total rubbish, i never mention politics,...

hm, I personally am not thinking overmuch about LH. Each time I think about it I come up against the brick wall of just not knowing the back story. So I think until we know (and that might never happen) I am kind of ignoring it.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:51

rev, yes - and no, both are part of the discussion here IMO.

Control being the bigger issue - but the larger issue of control over what happens to our posts and how well they are protected as well as control over what goes into the individual copy.

Of course I have not ever wanted to appear in the DM - and that has not changed recently so yes, the DM is also an issue. IMO a column that got around all the control issues, identifying issues would still not be a great thing if it was appearing in the DM week after week giving the impression of a link between MN and the DM.

Schubert · 19/08/2009 19:53

It's not up to individual journalists employed at various different publications to protect our community. It's very much up to MNHQ.

KingCnutBoredOfDMButWontLetGo · 19/08/2009 19:53

Stripey, one of the comments I read went along the lnes of "why would you want to work if you are not up to it" not really supportive of someone who has just been unfairly dismissed IMO.
