Should there be a permanently accessible record of banned trolls?

Rather than us having to rely on the rumour mill grapevine to find out who is and isn't a troll?
I have no desire for this thread to become another long rehash of past trolling incidents but I have realised that it is in fact pretty hard (and sometimes impossible) to work out who was and wasn't established as a troll from the archives. (threads often get pulled, leaving no trace, and chat of course disappears anyway).
So I wondered if a permanent place for MNHQ to post the banned names might be helpful?
I actually do think that it is important that we know, but of course others may (will) disagree.

I suppose it would save the

'Was * a troll' type threads?

Mumsnet usually come on halfway through and confirm or deny anyway, so I guess it would just be like that, but in one place?? Esp as people miss threads, or they pull it

Fimbo · 09/01/2009 13:04

Yes I agree

elliott · 09/01/2009 13:13

MNHQ don't always confirm or deny. I was trying to go back and check up on someone yesterday and just couldn't work it out from the archives. Had to rely on another poster telling me and that's not always going to be reliable is it?

I know, that's why I said usually. I agree with you. I was just stating that as they don't have a problem with putting in the middle of a thread, which may get pulled anyway, it may be easier to put it all on one thread??

elliott · 09/01/2009 13:32

Good
(was just chatting randomly to bump the thread really!)
It would have to be somewhere that only MNHQ could edit I think.

on some levels I think this would be a good idea, but I also think that on some levels the threads talking about the trolls are a good thing, because they highlight to people just exactly what these trolls do to people and how they get sucked in by them.

If you'd never read the threads posted by the troll you wouldn't have any idea what they'd actually done, iyswim?

for eg it's only by someone pointing out that a certain troll had been outed last week that links to threads were made and people were able to see for themselves exactly what had gone on. If that hadn't happened people would just say "oh, that one? didn't know them/don't care" and people would continue to troll without any major effect on the majority of posters.

I think posters should all be aware of just how devostating trolling can be, so they perhaps think before getting too involved.

whitenoise · 09/01/2009 14:28

To achieve what exactly? threads will still start asking WHY someone has been banned. Threads will be rehashed to find the "back story".

It's a good idea but not sure it could work in teh way that you want

elliott · 09/01/2009 14:44

Just to achieve clarity. It won't stop the discussions of what the trolls did, and that wouldn't be the point, but it would mean that someone who missed the exact point at which the expose occurred could just quickly answer the question 'were they or weren't they' with certainty.

OP posts:
whitenoise · 09/01/2009 14:45

but even with threads such as XXX is a troll , people still wade in and ask why/how/when etc

moondog · 09/01/2009 14:47

How do you define a 'troll' anyway. We all assume an online persona so by defnition are all trolls.

lovelysongbirdie · 09/01/2009 14:48

and what would this section be called? outted trolls, captured trolls trolls r us?

elliott · 09/01/2009 14:49

I mean those people (well, personas) who have been banned from posting for misleading people maliciously.

OP posts:
elliott · 09/01/2009 14:50

It would be a small, and, ahem, select group
I don't know exactly how it would work, but probably a click through from the talk homepage or something rather than a thread or section.

Hello all. Just to let you know that we've clocked this thread and are following your thoughts. Not sure on the stance yet at MNHQ but we'll keep you posted.

moondog · 09/01/2009 14:53

And how can yuo 'ban' someone? Do they not just log in under different moniker?

elliott · 09/01/2009 15:05

Apparently they can 'ban IP addresses' but it doesn't work if you have a 'dynamic IP address' (don't ask me what that is I'm quoting whitenoise).

OP posts:
Stretch · 09/01/2009 15:12

You don't have to have a dynamic IP address. You can reset your IP address, register a new email acount and then start posting again.

LiffeyOink · 09/01/2009 15:42

Is it really that big a deal?

What's the definition of a troll? Somebody who gets something slightly different OUT of posting on MN.

A troll is a human being wth a keyboard and a mouse. The end.

moondog · 09/01/2009 15:43

Exactly Liffey.
