If you (still) feel the need to discuss Moldies, please do it here so folks can hide this if they want to.

Well hopefully the title says it all. There's been a suggestion, and we agree, that as we did with Baby P and the Mc Canns we just have one thread where anyone who feels they still have anything to add on this subject can post and those who'd rather move on can hide it away.

It feels strange to put this thread in site stuff as we are definitely not wanting to encourage further discussion of Moldies (we have presents to wrap too you know ) but we weren't sure where else to put it.

We will delete any new Moldies threads that are started, so please feel free to report them in case we miss any (what with wrapping the presents and all...)

And if you do want to carry on the discussion please remember that Mumsnet's here to make everyone's lives easier and not the reverse, and that Christmas is a time of goodwill to all mumsnetters past, present and future

Thanks,
MNHQ

Oh how I wish we had an edit button on MN, I wouldn't be so dramatic.

Flihgtattendant · 30/12/2008 06:22

Well to take the thread back to a serious note (sorry) I apologise that my post must have come across as "Moldies who have slighted me" - I honestly didn't mean it that way, which is why I just picked some people, Moldies or not I'm not actually sure - after all we only know the definite Moldies because they have been involved in the discussions. I appreciate the apologies but that's not what I was trying for, and they're making me a bit uncomfortable - like I've put up a most-wanted list on my profile or something

Ooer I am an oldie who has namechanged for a fresh start (well changed my name to ask a question and quite like new name).

Why were threads deleted? Can't possibly read 2k+ posts!

Can someone kindly summarise or provide link to a summary?

Quattrocento · 30/12/2008 10:23

Back to this serious issue of apostrophising plural proper nouns ending in vowels ...

I think there are situations nowadays where you can use apostrophes for plurals - but I don't think the form of the noun matters, nor does it matter whether or not it ends in a vowel. I think the issue is when the noun is abbreviated to its initials.

Take "television" and "digital video disk"

Two televisions
Two digital video disks

No-one would have an urge to stick an apostrophe in there. But once you use the abbreviated forms - TV and DVD - the issue is much murkier.

2 TVs or 2 TV's?
2 DVDs or 2 DVD's?

It is fairly common usage to stick apostrophes into the abbreviated form of plural nouns.

It's quite hard to find a proper noun that both (a) gets referred to by its initials and (b) is commonly used in the plural form, but I think there are car types for instance
TVR. If you try it with that it seems that the form of the noun doesn't matter.

Dear God I am even boring myself with this, but I was sure there was a point in OBM throwing the TV at me last night.

groan, any time there is a summary, it all kicks off again!

groan · 30/12/2008 10:29

Have obviously missed a major milestone in the history of mumsnet; a schism of great magnitude.

Doh!

groan · 30/12/2008 10:32

I can imagine Twelvedaisy . Should have 'serious' emoticon there really but none available!

Colbeck · 30/12/2008 10:35

Count yourself lucky groan. It waas quite amusing but disproportionately time consuming.

I'd advise staying away for another week and then coming back when little evidence to tempt you wil remain.

If you are toocurious for that there are links to the original therad on here....but you have been warned. IF you'd like to speak to your family over the next 2 days DON'T DO IT!!!!!!
