If you (still) feel the need to discuss Moldies, please do it here so folks can hide this if they want to.

Well hopefully the title says it all. There's been a suggestion, and we agree, that as we did with Baby P and the Mc Canns we just have one thread where anyone who feels they still have anything to add on this subject can post and those who'd rather move on can hide it away.

It feels strange to put this thread in site stuff as we are definitely not wanting to encourage further discussion of Moldies (we have presents to wrap too you know ) but we weren't sure where else to put it.

We will delete any new Moldies threads that are started, so please feel free to report them in case we miss any (what with wrapping the presents and all...)

And if you do want to carry on the discussion please remember that Mumsnet's here to make everyone's lives easier and not the reverse, and that Christmas is a time of goodwill to all mumsnetters past, present and future

Thanks,
MNHQ

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:36

yeah, well, my landlord's daughter is married to some Afrikaans bloke what didn't even have English as a first language.

he's a nice enough bloke.

i asked him once, are your parents S. African, too?

and he said his mother was from what used to be called Rhodesia.

i had to look on an old map .

it's Zimbabwe now.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 00:38

lol @ having to look it up

yes Southern Rhodesia = Zimbabwe
Northern Rhodesia = Zambia

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:38

wtf if billtong?

DD1 has already seen their wee boy on webcam.

she said, 'Riaan, you talk funny. You have a funny name like a girl.'

he laughed and laughed and said, 'You talk funny, too, Scottish. I can't say your name, Scottish.'

he is also 5.

KewcumbersRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/12/2008 00:39

Expat - play "I've never met a nice South African" loudly at every opportunity if you can get your hands on a copy at short notice.

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:40

they said this armurulla stuff tastes a bit like avocat.

yuk, that stuff is the dry boak.

i'll bet that billtong is boak, too. probably like dried rhino or that.

ggirlsbells · 24/12/2008 00:41

biltong is dried meat..boak

KewcumbersRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/12/2008 00:41

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:42

i can't do that, kew, they seem very good-natured and after all, they are landlord's daughter's relations by marriage and all.

his daughter she got married in S. Africa to this chap.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 00:43

Ostrich is the best - you can get all different types - some of it is vile but you can get some really nice stuff too

Bit like Avocat!! Well I can't stand Avocat -but love Amarulla

KewcumbersRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/12/2008 00:44

ah yes I forgot the landlord connection...

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:44

oh GROSS at billtong.

it's probably like dried rhino tongue or penis or that, knowing what they eat.

and then i'll have to be all polite and try it and go, 'oh, um, it's so interesting, thank you so much.' and then put it in a napkin before i go turn on the shower and throw up so they won't hear.

Quattrocento · 24/12/2008 00:44

Don't knock biltong till you've tried it. Not that I have. Although I have managed crocodile and dog before now (when in Rome etc)

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 00:45

they don't use dodgy parts!!! I wouldn't touch the stuff if they did.

KewcumbersRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 24/12/2008 00:45

billtong- old worn shoe soles which the south africans pretend is food to have a laugh and see if the tourists will eat it. Don;t be conned.

snoopdog · 24/12/2008 00:46

thing is custy,

and i totally see what you are saying,

ok...

story no 1, eg,

i say or do something that deeply upsets another friend of mine,

she tells me she is pissed off,

i have 2 choices,

either...

so what?

you are taking it to heart,

it is not personal, what is the big deal?

why are you stressing about this?

i never said anything 'directly' about you,

ok, story no 2,

i get an e mail asking me to be part of something 'on the quiet' and in getting the mentioned mail i feel super special,

i would, i am easy lead...

so here i am,

posting to the 140+ people who matter most to me,

this is amazing, i have a place of peace,

inner santum, some have phrased...

because 140 (give or take) like me so, the other people dont matter too much,

people who think they have done no wrong and are right in their thoughts are now sitting back and watching the fall out

this has gone arse over tits big time...

very sad

LadyOfWaffle · 24/12/2008 00:47

Biltong is lovely! I had it years ago, my friend was south african and she ate it all the time. Well, not all the time, just sometimes .

expatinscotland · 24/12/2008 00:47

oh, barf, FAQ!

ostrich?!

boak it's probably all tough and rank and that.

that afrikaans sounds like someone making up a language.

i know that is so rude and we wouldn't dare say otherwise and i know they are so polite and honestly we're happy to host them, as they need a place to stay and we have lots to show them and landlord's daughter and weirdy Afrikaans husband are pleased.

but i hope they're just fast and lose with the booze and not that billtong or too much other weirdy foods like ostrich.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 00:48

oh Kewcumber - you've obviously only tried the dry stuff, that is like chewing on old boots (not that I've ever done that ) medium or "wet" (as it's called - yuck) much nicer.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 24/12/2008 00:49

Ostrich is yummy - had that for Christmas lunch here in the UK a few years ago. Was lovely and tender.
