Could MNHQ please clarify its policy with regard to tackling misinformation and disinformation on the site?

There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation here on Mumsnet. I expect most site users will be aware of this. It is not unique to Mumsnet by any means - disinformation is everywhere on the Internet these days.

The Mumsnet reporting function has an option which explicitly allows users to report posts as "misinformation". However, it is not clear to me as to what MNHQ's policy is for dealing with such reports, and I would be grateful if this could be clarified.

On previous occasions, when I have reported unequivocally false statements on Mumsnet, I have been told that MNHQ doesn't have the ability to check whether claims are factual or not, and so I should challenge the false statements on the relevant thread instead. I know that other posters have received similar responses.

I can sort of accept the explanation that the moderators may not have either the time or the skills to fact check everything, though I do personally think there is still an argument that MNHQ should take more responsibility for preventing the spread of disinformation via their site. However, I have found it harder to understand why they still provide an option for reporting misinformation if they do not actually feel that they are able to tackle it in practice. Is it merely to give the impression that they might do something about it?

Yesterday, I reported a post which contained a false statement that was presented as fact. It was not a statement that could be open to interpretation or a matter of subjective judgement. It was simply false, and demonstrably so.

I did not receive any response to the report for many hours. Then eventually I received a response which stated that the post did not break Talk Guidelines and that it would therefore be left to stand so that it could be challenged on the thread.

I responded to the email to ask for clarification as to whether misinformation or disinformation is now permitted under Talk Guidelines, and to ask what the "report misinformation" function was for if this is no longer breaking Talk Guidelines. I have not received any response to that query. However, a few minutes after sending it, I received a separate email (from the same moderator), thanking me for reporting the post in question and confirming that the post had been deleted. The email made no reference to the earlier emails, didn't explain the earlier statement that the post hadn't broken any Talk Guidelines, didn't address the questions that I had asked. I checked the thread, and the false post had indeed been deleted. But I don't think it would have been if I had not pushed back.

It is difficult to have much faith in Mumsnet moderation when such inconsistencies arise. The most charitable explanation that I can think of is that the moderator didn't really bother checking the post properly before initially deciding to allow it to stand.

I do appreciate that the moderators are human, and that they will make mistakes sometimes, but this seems to happen far more often than it should. Could MNHQ please shed some light on the specific procedures that are followed when reports of misinformation are received, and what the actual policy is with regard to dealing with misinformation and disinformation when it is identified.

Thank you

We know that Russia tried to interfere with the Brexit referendum. What form do people think that interference took?

BeethovenNinth · 17/10/2026 07:23

Of course there is a threshhold noble. Your example - which I never once read because it was likely removed by MN promptly - crosses this. But most posts - many that I disagree with - do not. For example - “people that do not vaccinate their kids should have their kids removed” is something I find deeply disturbing but it’s not something that should be removed however much it disgusts some people. Or “I worry men from other cultures might change ours” - this is not racism. This isn’t xenophobia but these kind of comments have to stay, whatever our own beliefs are.

this era of policing opinions we don’t like is dangerous and leads to extremism in itself.

blossom I believe the seeds of brexit were sown when Gordon Brown called a woman “xenophobic” for her query regarding the transformation of her local town due to many Eastern Europeans. Had those conversations taken place, I think Brexit wouldn’t have happened.

BIossomtoes · 17/10/2026 07:36

UKIP was formed in 1991 - ten years before Brown accurately described Gillian Duffy as a bigoted woman - so I’m afraid your theory seems unlikely.

BeethovenNinth · 17/10/2026 07:40

Honestly blossom that’s your view. I have mine - we live in an age of censorship and hysteria over different opinions. No one can debate or disagree any more and the world is poorer for it. Free speech is vital in a democracy. But I respect your view to say otherwise 😉

I didn’t say otherwise. It’s you who seems to object to Mrs Duffy being accurately described by Brown.

Curious why Brown felt the need to express deep regret and publicly apologise to Duffy, then.

It was a simple mis-statement of fact. Akin to claiming that electrons are positively charged rather than a hotly debated question like whether or not Israel is committing genocide, which is clearly more nuanced and open to subjective judgement or interpretation.

Just because something is hotly debated doesn’t mean it falls into the fact or not fact question. It’s extremely clear, based on facts, that Israel is not committing genocide. And the spreading of that misinformation is leading to Jews being terrorized, harassed, ostracized and murdered in the West. It’s our era’s racist hate movement against Jews, based on a lie presented as fact in the same way the Nazi’s based their hate movement on racist supremecy theories ( which were respectable and considered scientific at the time) and before that hatred of Jews was based on the ‘fact’ that they were Christ killers.

So the genocide lie is a lot more deadly than what some randomer believes about electrons.

So that’s the issue with tackling ‘misinformation’ in the censorship way you want. It’s always controversial.

Personally I think allowing other MNetters to challenge is better in a democracy. Though I think public funded institutions should be coming down hard against the genocide lie and naming it for what it is. A racist blood libel.

Political expediency.

BIossomtoes · 17/10/2026 08:26

Political expediency.

Never change Blossom.

These are the facts:
Brown is caught labelling Duffy a ‘xenophone’ on a hot mic.
The ensuing media blow back compels Brown to issue a statement of deep regret and a public apology to Duffy.

Right there is a perfect example of the facts versus your spun version.

BIossomtoes · 17/10/2026 08:44

Motivated by political expediency. That was most definitely not a sincere apology. And I thought you were the cynical one.

Xenophone? What's that?

He called her a bigoted woman. Which was fair comment.

It was fair comment. I don’t believe he was remotely sorry but he had an election to fight. 🤷‍♀️

Curbedenthusiasm · 17/10/2026 08:55

Typo and yes a bigoted woman.

Ironic, when It was Brown who demonstrated the bigotry.

No matter, this has proved a successful thread, and I am satisfied with the outcome.

You do amuse me TW - I mean that. You bring a smile to my face on a beautiful Saturday morning.

It would be nice if you started a thread, for once. I shall not hold my breath.

BIossomtoes · 17/10/2026 09:54

Why would she start a thread when there’s such a plethora of existing ones to choose from? It’s not obligatory. Where’s yours, by the way?

People mostly choose to start threads if they want to discuss particular topics that don't already have threads of their own.

Not to please other random MNers who are apparently keeping some kind of curious tally.

Why does it matter?

Yes she was a bigoted woman, and a xenophobe too, though he didn't call her that. As someone who has 50% Eastern European ethnicity myself, I was in agreement with Gordon Brown.

You say that free speech is vital in a democracy and "I may not agree with what you say you but I will defend to the end your right to say it"

But then you also agree that the antisemitic conspiracy theory crosses a line and should be deleted.

So actually you're ok with censorship.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 17/10/2026 11:25

Can I just reiterate at this point that I'm not talking about hotly contested topics where there are differences of opinion. I am absolutely not advocating the censorship of differences in opinion.

I'm talking about blatant lies which are easily verifiable as such.

Do people really not understand the difference?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 17/10/2026 11:29

Perhaps the 'report mis/disinformation' option needs to stay so that there is a route for reporting blatant crap but with a "*something that is incorrect is not necessarily against talk guidelines, we will review and get back to you" caveat

LadyCapybara · 17/10/2026 11:36

The gulf between fact, misinformation and opinion seems quite difficult to bridge for some.

Much of what is shared on MN threads - particularly the political ones - falls within misinformation and opinion. That’s just the way it is. Readers need to learn discernment.

I would genuinely like to know which part of the guidelines that post broke because I've seen far worse stand.

I've seen far worse left to stand as well.
