Can we have a Wanker's Corner?

Hello.

It's been noted in the past that there are some pretentious wankers amongst us who like to discuss some general subjects (eg.Porn, Religion) in a fairly, erm.. academic manner, and that this sometimes seems to intimidate and/or infuriate other posters.

There doesn't seem to be an easy solution to this problem: there's no doubt that people really do feel intimidated and that it might prevent them from posting on a subject that concerns them. It also must feel hijack-y at times.

At the same time, it's hard for the Wanker's to be told that they mustn't post anything that might intimidate.

Would it be possible to have a special place, with very hard chairs to keep us awake, that we may call our own?

I came for the very hard chairs. And in homage (pronounced "ohmaaj" of course) to Dr Daniels.

[sees obm's interlaced fingers and raises her a palms brought together and fingertips raised to mouth contemplatively]

onebatmother · 02/07/2008 21:28

Oh my freaking christ you have utterly flipped me with your Dr Daniels reference.

OP posts:
margoandjerry · 02/07/2008 21:32

you betcha

Actually, need to check. Are we allowed smileys on this thread/corner? Obviously the intellectual in us disdains them but they do add a little pep to our discussions, wouldn't you say?

Also, are we to be set difficult topics for discussion or are we just generally acting all superior to the others? (and )

onebatmother · 02/07/2008 21:35

children, gather round.. no.. closer..closer.. no closer still.. no that's too close, ergh, back off a bit, I can't breathe..>

That's better.

Once upon a time, margoandjerry and onebatmother went to the same school. And we had a lovely English teacher who helped us become the rounded, cultured, and (vitally) wankerish ladies that stand before you.

OP posts:
policywonk · 02/07/2008 21:35

Paul Daniels?

Habbibu · 02/07/2008 21:38

Some of us never ever ever use "smileys".

policywonk · 02/07/2008 21:38

Oh I see

margoandjerry · 02/07/2008 21:40

oh tick, definitely. I still hear her voice when I'm trying to work out whether it's owing to or due to.

She made me the wanker I am today.

There is a lovely thread running through this thread (?) for me: I went to school with both OBM and PW - but at separate schools and at separate times obviously (I might be a swot but I managed to restrict myself to one school at a time). I am the Kevin Bacon of Wanker's Corner.

onebatmother · 02/07/2008 21:41

We are allowed all emoticons, and some extras which MN (sadly) have refused to provide us with

OP posts:
margoandjerry · 02/07/2008 21:42

Oh Habbibu, teach me to be pure in my ways too. I try to resist them and to focus on the clarity of my expression but they are just so and (attempts to convey a sense of guilty pleasure entirely through the use of smileys).

policywonk · 02/07/2008 21:43

LOL at Kevin Bacon

I must point out that M&J left MY COMPREHENSIVE to go to OBM's FEE-PAYING SCHOOL.

Can I be the chippy wanker?

margoandjerry · 02/07/2008 21:45

Almost as chippy as when I got there to find I had quite the wrong skirt and my hair was not at all the thing.

Habbibu · 02/07/2008 21:48
onebatmother · 02/07/2008 23:04

blimey Pol that is another freakish coincidence, surely?

OP posts:
onebatmother · 02/07/2008 23:18

oh LOL at Kevin Bacon too (my internet connection is patchy)

Re: topics. I like the idea of wanking about, until something comes up here or on other threads, that necessitates Serious Wanking.

OP posts:
IorekByrnison · 02/07/2008 23:32

Yes that's a good idea about topics. I vote we start with a discussion of Klein's object relations and the possible effects of the maternal administration of dairy based snacks on psychosexual development...

Threadwworm · 03/07/2008 03:29

Aargh. But I really did suggest discussing Kleinian object relations, in Daniel Deronda. Does that mean that I am a wanker for real?

Threadwworm · 03/07/2008 03:31

Reading list for Iorek's seminar:

"The Good and Bad Udder and the Laughing Cow"

"Dairylea Dunkers and the Oedipal Complex: The Breadstick as Phallic Conquest."

ipanemagirl · 03/07/2008 12:07

i feel the need to come to wankers' corner and find like minds with whom I might discuss the work of Werner Herzog.

I have a need for this! I need not be ashamed of it here!!! Need I?

IorekByrnison · 03/07/2008 12:58

Snort at genius reading list. Although the more I think about it, the more they seem like perfectly reasonable pieces of scholarship.

I am really enjoying Daniel Deronda by the way, but got distracted by a Fay Weldon novel I found on holiday (I find her quite like George Eliot actually, apart from Weldon's cartoon characters. I love the way they both keep stepping back from the story with these nice dry observations concerning our assumptions about motive and morality). I do want to discuss it when I've finished. But Gwendolen has only just won the gold star at the archery competition so I have some way to go.

I haven't actually read any Melanie Klein yet, but I shall. Most of what I know of her is from a music therapist friend who is obsessed with her. Actually I think dd and I may have a genuine problem with my good and bad udders that might well be better served here than in Breast and Bottle Feeding but perhaps I'll save it for another time.

And yes to Werner Herzog. The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is one of my favourite films. We have no need for shame.

ipanemagirl · 03/07/2008 13:28

Ahh thank you Iorek, I haven't even seen any films by him yet but have heard a lot about him and saw that 'Imagine' programme about him the other night.

What a fabulous nutter. And Klaus Kinski - even madder! I'm dying to see Aguirre Wrath of God, should I start with that or not?

IorekByrnison · 03/07/2008 13:35

Bugger missed the Imagine programme. Yes to Aguirre. And then The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser.

ipanemagirl · 03/07/2008 13:59

Thanks Iorek, I'll try to order it.

You should be able to watch 'Imagine' on iplayer - the section on WH's relationship with KKinski is so entertaining. And the clips from the end of Aguirre wrath of God are great.

this Is has to be one of the greatest tantrums of all time. Have you seen it? Klaus Kinski shouting at some poor production manager on set. Hilarious! And the poor indigenous people watching in horror....

onebatmother · 03/07/2008 15:54

blimey and this is quite revealing.

OP posts:
onebatmother · 03/07/2008 15:57

can I just back ref my amusement at PW's small reproduction of the Venus of Willendorf? LOL. Do you think they give them out on the lecturer's induction course? Elbow patches for the guys, V o W's for the ladies..
